‘Canadians are uniting': Carney evokes history in Canada Day address

CTV Newsa day ago
Prime Minister Mark Carney called for national unity and growth Tuesday in a video address celebrating Canada Day.
'One hundred and fifty-eight years ago, a few provinces bet on a big idea: That they'd be stronger together than they ever could be apart. They were right,' he said in a video recorded in front of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.
'They became a new federation that's now grown into our strong, bilingual, multicultural, ambitious country.'
Lasting just over two minutes, the address wove together Canada's past with the federal government's policy goals for the coming months and years, from addressing interprovincial trade barriers to a renewed prioritization on defence spending.
Past, present and future
In his remarks Tuesday, Carney evoked moments of Canadian heroism, from battles at Vimy Ridge and in Normandy during the First and Second World Wars, to the story of Gander, N.L., where more than three-dozen flights from around the world were redirected in the hours following the September 11th terror attacks in New York City.
'Our shared history has been marked by inflection points; moments where Canada has had to step up,' Carney said.
'Now, we face another such moment. The world is changing, old friendships are fraying, our economy is being buffeted by a trade war we didn't start, our values are being tested by attacks on democracy and freedoms that we must resist.'
Amid what Carney called an increasingly 'divided and dangerous' world, he commended Canada for pulling together.
'Canadians are uniting. Together, we will build one Canadian economy, connected by major projects, powered by Canadian energy, transformed by Canadian technology and crafted by Canadian workers,' he said.
'This is the greatest nation on Earth. Together, we'll keep making it even better. Happy Canada Day.'

Sask. residents embrace Flixbus

The flixbus picking up riders at Kahkewistahaw Gas and Convenience. (Hallee Mandryk / CTV News) Many Saskatchewan residents are already taking advantage of a new bus service in the province. 'This is wonderful. I got the ticket, was easy. Booked online; reserved the seat, and it's affordable,' Gloria Swoboda, a bus rider said. Flixbus has been active in Canada, and other countries, for several years. The company has recently added trips between North Battleford, Saskatoon and Regina to their schedule. Tickets range from $30 to $60 one way, depending on the destination. Several bus riders shared that it's a more cost effective way to travel than buying a plane ticket. 'Instead of paying $300 for a flight last minute, $60 for five hours, it's worth last minute trips, there's no need to think about a big budget expense. So it makes it quick and easy,' said Joseph Harvey, another rider who spoke to CTV News in Saskatoon. 'A plane ticket, it was going to cost about $500. That just wasn't feasible right now,' Michelle Brady said. Brady says the bus service will be a useful as a way to visit her long distance partner. 'Being on a budget, we're both students, my partner and I, so having this affordable option was actually really awesome.' Since the closure of the Saskatchewan Transit Company (STC) in 2017, Swoboda shared that getting around can be challenging for those who cannot drive, or prefer not to. 'I don't want to drive. I'm a senior, 75, so I don't want to really drive that long distance in case something goes wrong with the vehicle,' Swoboda said. 'In Canada, the families are so spread out now. It's not like 50 years ago when everybody got married in the same area and stayed,' Swoboda said. Swoboda says she has children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren throughout Canada, and she'll be using the new bus service to visit family. With a significant distance between most Canadian cities, a bus service provides an accessible and affordable way for people to connect with one another. 'I'm from BC, so like being out here, obviously it's a little bit on the more rural side of things. To be able to explore ... other parts of Canada this quick is definitely beneficial,' Harvey said. Brady added that visiting other Canadian cities is an opportunity not all Canadians have. 'Connecting cities is important. As a Canadian, I want to be able to go across Canada. So by having different forms of transportation to allow me to do that, I think is a really great thing,' she said. After witnessing the closure of the STC, Swoboda is hopeful the demand will keep this new service active in the province for many years to come. 'I hope both busses survive, that there's enough people going to be using them. Don't forget we saved the planet,' Swoboda said.

B.C. labour board certifies Victoria Uber drivers' union, a first in Canada, says UFCW

The Uber app is seen on an iPhone near a driver's vehicle after the company launched service, in Vancouver, Friday, Jan. 24, 2020. Uber drivers in B.C.'s capital have successfully unionized, achieving 'the first union certification of its kind for Uber drivers in Canada,' according to UFCW Canada. The union announced the 'landmark victory' in a statement Wednesday, saying the B.C. Labour Relations Board had officially certified the drivers' union under the UFCW Canada umbrella. UFCW stands for 'United Food and Commercial Workers.' In Canada, the union claims more than 1.3 million members. Victoria Uber drivers will now be part of UFCW Local 1518, which touts itself as British Columbia's largest private sector union. 'This breakthrough signals the start of a new chapter, with Victoria leading the way as the first Canadian city where gig workers have successfully unionized to demand better protections and rights,' UFCW Canada said in its statement. According to the union, drivers campaigned for unionization to secure 'core workplace protections,' including 'improved health and safety measures, transparency in the app's rating system and fair processes for account deactivations.' UFCW Canada national president Shawn Haggerty called the successful campaign 'a defining moment for the labour movement in Canada.' 'The certification of Uber drivers in Victoria shows that workers in every sector—even in the platform economy—can organize and win," Haggerty said, in the statement. 'These drivers are setting a national precedent, and UFCW Canada is committed to supporting them every step of the way as they work toward a strong, fair first agreement.' For its part, Uber stressed that there would be 'no change' for drivers or passengers using the app in Victoria, highlighting that – though they are now automatically members of the union – drivers retain the ability to drive as much or as little as they want. 'Ninety-four per cent of drivers say that driving with Uber provides them with the scheduling flexibility they cannot get from a traditional job,' said Laura Miller, director of public policy for Uber Canada, in a statement. 'With the recent modernization of B.C. labour laws, which now protect that flexibility, drivers as online platform workers can determine whether they want union representation. We will be sitting down with UFCW 1518 to discuss the issues raised by drivers.' Uber has only been operational in Victoria since 2023, when it received approval from the provincial Passenger Transportation Board to take over another company's licence. The ride-hailing app launched province-wide service earlier this year, five years after its Metro Vancouver debut in early 2020. That launch followed years of debate around legalizing ride-hailing services in B.C. In its statement, UFCW Canada touted its role in consulting with the B.C. government to develop laws and regulations to support so-called 'platform workers.' The union has also been working with Uber since signing a national agreement with the company in 2022. UFCW Canada says it has filed more than 4,000 cases on behalf of drivers since the agreement took effect. 'Victoria's Uber drivers have opened the door for app-based workers in British Columbia,' said UFCW Canada Local 1518 president Patrick Johnson, in the statement. 'We're committed to having their back as they negotiate an agreement that honors their historic achievement and sets a new standard for fairness and respect in the digital economy.'
