Aizawl, Jul 20 (PTI) At least 49 people have died of complications related to alcohol consumption between January and June this year in dry Mizoram, a senior official said on Sunday.
The government has been making massive efforts to curb the menace of drug, alcohol and other substance abuse, Excise and Narcotics department Commissioner Z Lalhmangaiha said.
'According to our records, 49 people, including five women, died because of complications related to alcohol consumption between January and June this year in the state," Lalhmangaiha said.
The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act prohibits the manufacture, consumption, sale and import of liquor in the state. However, a section of people either brew it locally or bring it from outside Mizoram illegally.
Lalhmangaiha said that inspections are being carried out at hotels and restaurants to find out if they are selling alcohol in violation of the law.
The commissioner said that department officials are regularly conducting night patrolling in Aizawl and other district headquarters to ensure peace in the society. PTI COR NN

How old is too old for IVF treatment?

In an age where career goals, late weddings, and medical progress have extended the limits of parenthood, the query "How old is too old for IVF?" is more pertinent than ever. But even science has its limitations—and so does the DOES THE LAW SAY IN INDIA?Under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act enacted in India, the legal cut-off age for women to undergo IVF is 50 years and for men is 55 years. The age limit mainly exists to protect the child's health and ensure that the parents are physically fit to raise them. DONOR EGGSIVF is legally allowed up to 50, the success rate for conception using a woman's own eggs diminishes considerably after 40, and by 41 or 42 years of age, utilization of self-eggs is very rare. Most fertility doctors strongly advise that IVF using self-eggs be done at or before age 41 in order to enhance the likelihood of success. Beyond that point, the eggs' quality and quantity are lost at a very rapid rate, causing fertility to plummet and increasing the risk of genetic abnormalities. This is where donor eggs enter the picture. Women over 42—particularly those close to 50—usually need donor eggs in order to conceive. It wasn't an easy decision emotionally, but the moment I held my daughter, I knew it was the right one. IVF gave us our miracle." says Meenal , 40 years. Nick Jonas Shares How He Discovered His Type 1 Diabetes During Jonas Brothers Tour

Last Updated: While reminiscing about the early days of their career, they recalled that Nick's health began to deteriorate during their Jonas Brothers School Tour in 2006. Nick Jonas, the youngest one from The Jonas Brothers, revealed that he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during his early teenage years. The jealous crooner opened up about his struggles with diabetes and revealed that it was his older brother Joe who made the call that finally helped him get diagnosed. Nick Jonas Did Not Realise He Had Diabetes On July 24, The Jonas Brothers, consisting of Nick, Joe, and Kevin, appeared on Penn Badgley's podcast Podcrushed, where the three brothers were seen looking back on their rise to stardom. While reminiscing about the early days of their career, they recalled that Nick's health began to deteriorate during their Jonas Brothers School Tour in 2006. 'I started losing a ton of weight and, you know, drinking a ton of water and using the bathroom all the time—all the signs that I now know are symptoms of type 1 diabetes," Nick revealed, explaining that he had no idea and just knew that he was not feeling well. 'It's actually a testament to the lack of information and awareness there was around type 1 at this time," he added. According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of type 1 diabetes in children tend to develop quickly, and the most common symptoms include weight loss, thirst, fatigue, and frequent urination—all the signs that Nick showed at the age of 13. Joe Jonas Helped Nick Gets Diagnosed Nick remembered a time when he and his brother Joe visited a place in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, when Joe first realised there was something wrong with Nick. 'We went to the pool one day, and he saw my back and called my parents and said, 'You know, something's really wrong. You have to get down here," Nick recalled. 'Because you're so skinny?" Penn asked, to which Joe replied, 'So skinny," and Kevin added, 'You could see every bone." Nick then went on to explain that the normal glucose level for teenagers who do not have type 1 diabetes should be between 70 and 120. 'Mine was like north of 900, which is very high," he said. Later, the singer revealed that after spending a few days at the hospital, he was fit to perform again. 'Back on stage, you know, within a week of being diagnosed," Nick added. Nick Jonas Has Been Living With the Disease for 20 Years Recalling his journey with diabetes, Nick stated, 'I'm coming up on my twentieth year living with the disease, which coincides with the twentieth year of the band, coincidentally,' adding that when it comes to diabetes management, he only trusts the Dexcom G7 glucose monitor, a brand he has promoted. Clinically Dead For 1 Hour, Woman Says She Floated Above Body And Watched Her Own Surgery

Pam Reynolds described a bright light pulling her in during surgery, where she saw late relatives, until a shadowy figure told her to return. She came back to life The mystery of life after death drew global attention in 1991 with the extraordinary case of American woman Pam Reynolds. Declared clinically dead for over an hour during a rare brain surgery, Reynolds later described a vivid experience, encountering a bright light, meeting deceased relatives, and witnessing what she believed was 'heaven.' Her account stunned medical professionals and reignited debate among scientists and the public about the existence of an afterlife. In 1991, singer and songwriter Pam Reynolds underwent a complex and highly risky brain surgery for an aneurysm. The procedure required extraordinary measures, including reducing her body temperature to 10 degrees Celsius, removing her blood, and temporarily stopping her heart, a process known as 'hypothermic cardiac arrest.' During this time, Pam was clinically dead, with no activity in her brain and body. However, upon regaining consciousness post-surgery, Pam recounted an extraordinary experience. Pam told doctors she was conscious during the surgery and could hear everything happening in the operating theatre. She accurately described the doctors' conversations and the surgical instruments used. Furthermore, she claimed to have floated above her body, watching the operation from above. Pam also described a bright light pulling her towards it during the surgery. She claimed that as she moved towards this light, she saw deceased relatives who were calling her. However, she said that a mysterious shadow instructed her to return. Pam expressed that she did not want the experience to end but eventually came back to her body. Her account bewildered the doctors. Dr. Michael Sabom, the head neurosurgeon of the operation, investigated Pam's claims. He confirmed that the tools and conversations Pam described were accurate, despite her being completely unconscious with no recorded brain activity at the time. Pam Reynolds' experience became one of the most discussed cases of 'Near-Death Experience' (NDE). Some scientists attribute it to a lack of oxygen to the brain or the influence of drugs, while others see it as evidence of the soul and an afterlife. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 16:14 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
