Balochistan March will reach Islamabad if talks fail: JI chief
Addressing participants of the 'Haq Do Balochistan Ko Long March' outside the Lahore Press Club on Thursday, he stated that to prevent a major confrontation and avoid sending a negative message from Punjab to Balochistan, Jamaat-e-Islami opted for negotiations. However, he made it clear that if the federal government's negotiating committee fails to accept the demands of the march, he will personally join Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman in leading the caravan to Islamabad, accompanied by JI workers and supporters from across Punjab.
Talking to reporters; Rehman urged the ruling elite to end injustice against the people of Balochistan, form a commission to address the issue of missing persons, and recognize the rightful claim of the province's people over their natural resources and minerals. He demanded the opening of border trade with Iran and called on the government to complete the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project without succumbing to U.S. pressure.
He criticized the hypocrisy of powerful people that preach constitutionalism while themselves violating the Constitution. 'Those responsible for extrajudicial killings cannot teach others about the rule of law,' he said. 'Stop insulting the people of Balochistan in the name of security. Give respect to the Baloch. Rulers have no authority to distribute certificates of patriotism or treason.'
JI Secretary General Ameerul Azeem and JI Balochistan Chief Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman also addressed the gathering. Other prominent leaders present included JI Punjab (Central) chief Javed Kasuri, JI Lahore head Ziauddin Ansari Advocate, Central Information Secretary Shakeel Turabi, and several others. Leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami's Women's Wing also joined the sit-in in solidarity, with Secretary General Dr. Humaira Tariq addressing the crowd.
Criticizing the Punjab government's handling of the Long March, Rehman highlighted the stark contrast between the warm reception of the march by ordinary citizens from Fort Munro to Lahore, and the state's attempts to block a peaceful, democratic protest. 'Jamaat-e-Islami chose the path of dialogue to prevent any negative fallout, but dismantling police blockades would not have been difficult for us,' he said. 'Our history testifies that we have never surrendered before tyranny.'
He added that despite the government's unparalleled incompetence, Jamaat-e-Islami decided to avoid exposing them further for the sake of national unity. 'For us, Pakistan is like a mosque — sacred and indivisible. We will not allow harm to come to it under any circumstances.'
In response to a question; Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman called on the federal government to fulfill its commitment, form the promised committee, and accept the legitimate demands of the march. He emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami will never compromise on the constitutional and democratic rights of the people.
Expressing satisfaction over the growing awareness, he said the very presence of Baloch citizens in Lahore raising their voice is the result of Jamaat-e-Islami's struggle. He announced that in November, Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman will address a massive gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan during the Jamaat's All Pakistan Ijtema.
He said the Form-47 rulers — representing elite impositions — have been thrust upon both Punjab and Balochistan. 'This systematic suppression of democratic norms must end. Problems solved through force don't bring peace — they breed resistance.'

Though Pakistan and the US have a long history of relationship, American oil and gas companies have not remained very active here. Distrust between Pakistan and the US still prevails as conspiracy theories suggest that offshore fields in Karachi seawaters have significant hydrocarbon reserves. Many people believe that Pakistan did not allow ExxonMobil to go further beyond in sea for offshore exploration during the tenure of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. Reports indicate that the US company sought access to an additional area in Kekra field to assess prospects of finding oil and gas but Pakistan expressed hesitation. Now, the US president has struck a new agreement for oil and gas field development in Pakistan. It comes at a time when Islamabad is inviting foreign companies to submit bids for offshore fields, which will open on September 30. Background discussions with officials revealed that the US had scores of private energy companies, but there were no signals which one would take part in field development. Pakistan expects ExxonMobil to come back for a new offshore exploration venture. However, Pakistani officials point out that Trump's announcement is just a commitment that US energy companies will come to Pakistan. "It will be clear in the coming days when the two countries will start official-level talks by including energy companies to look for opportunities of joint ventures," remarked an official. This is encouraging news as the US has been inclined towards India in the past. Even Indian oil and gas companies had formed joint ventures with US firms. Earlier, Washington even refused to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan and showed interest in dealing with Delhi. At that time, a US embassy official told media that Indian companies had entered into joint ventures with US firms; therefore, the doors for LNG trade were open for India, not Pakistan. Of late, the US president has hinted at American companies' investment in Pakistan's mineral sector. US Exim Bank is one of the financiers interested in pumping capital into the Reko Diq copper and gold mining project. US companies are also keen to forge joint ventures with Pakistani firms in the mineral sector, which has estimated potential worth $8 trillion. Experts call it a new opening in bilateral relationship between Pakistan and US that will clear the way for notable investment.

Unjust police certificates stigmatise acquitted citizens: LHC
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has recently observed that issuing a police character (PS) certificate reflecting a criminal history of an accused despite his acquittal by a court of law in an FIR violates the individual's constitutionally protected right. The court said such a practice not only violates the individual's protected right to human dignity but also imposes a lasting and unjust stigma upon a citizen who has been exonerated through due judicial process. The court said, once an accused has been acquitted by a competent court of law, he is to be considered, treated and regarded as innocent person under the law. Despite a conclusive acquittal of an accused any continuous reference or inclusion of the relevant FIR in official documents like police character certificate is unwarranted, the court observed. The court passed this order in a petition of Abdur Rehman Faryad challenging issuance of a PC certificate mentioning his name in the FIR despite his acquittal by a competent court of law. The court said the petitioner is entitled to a PC certificate that reflects his acquittal and the absence of any subsisting criminal liability. The court said the allegations levelled against the petitioner do not involve moral turpitude, nor do they relate to any offence against the State. The court said it would be legally unjustified to draw any adverse inference or attach any stigma to the petitioner merely based on the registration of an FIR. The court; therefore, directed the Home Secretary Punjab to ensure the issuance of a PC certificate in favour of the petitioner, which accurately reflects his present legal status. The said certificate shall exclude and omit any reference whatsoever to FIR registered at Police Station Nawan Kot, Lahore, in the light of the petitioner's lawful acquittal and the absence of any existing criminal liability, the court added. The court noted that law enforcement agencies have the administrative authority to maintain internal records of reported incidents, including FIRs, for various legitimate purposes. The court said the retention of such data, so long as it is confined to lawful administrative use and is not disclosed or misused in a manner prejudicial to the rights of the individual and cannot be construed as a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. The court; therefore, directed the office to transmit copy of the court order to the Inspector General of Police Punjab and the Chief Secretary Punjab, to ensure its strict implementation in light of the court's directions and observations.
