This McLaren F1 Could Break Records. But Not For Speed

The McLaren F1, now 30 years old, is a well-established legend . Launched in 1992, examples sell today well into the millions of dollars. There's an F1 heading to auction next month that could go for $23 million or more when the hammer drops. The 1997 F1 in question, sold new to Oracle Software CEO Larry Ellison, has had three total owners and has accumulated less than 6,500 miles. Chassis 062 features several McLaren Special Operations upgrades, such as a sport exhaust (the original comes with the car), an upgraded air conditioning system, upgraded radiators, and an aluminum fuel tank. Photo by: RM Sotheby's Photo by: RM Sotheby's The car underwent a major service in October 2023, getting a rebuilt transmission, new spark plugs, and four new tires on the original magnesium wheels. It also got a new battery, a correct windshield , and some repairs made by McLaren Philadelphia to the gold foil that lines the engine bay surrounding the BMW-sourced 6.1-liter V-12. The McLaren , one of seven imported to the United States, wears Magnesium Silver with a black leather interior and a gray driver's seat insert. Ellison put only 2,600 miles on the car before selling it in 2005. The second owner sold it to its current owner in 2010, having driven it less than 1,000 miles. The car has lived its entire life in California, and that's where RM Sotheby's will auction it off next month during Monterey Car Week . If it sells for as much as the auction house values it at, it could become one of the most expensive F1s ever sold . Historic McLaren F1 Road Car Auctioning For $23 Million

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A special Formula 1 McLaren car model is set to sell for $23 million at auction in August. The car's original owner was Larry Ellison, a billionaire who ranks among the wealthiest people in the world and is the co-founder of the software company Oracle. The McLaren F1 is powered by a naturally aspirated 6.1-liter V12 producing 627 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. RM Sotheby's will sell the McLaren F1 through an auction. "Delivered to him in August 1997, Ellison kept his car for over a decade with 062 wearing a California vanity license plate "ORACLE8", logging less than 2,600 miles, before it was purchased by another car collector and resident of the San Francisco Bay Area via Ferrari Maserati of Silicon Valley in 2005," the auction listing read. "Remarkably, the car would stay in the San Francisco Bay Area with its new owner, making it likely the only F1 to have changed owners multiple never changing its immediate geographic location! "In March of this year, a detailed condition report was carried out by Kevin Hines, the aforementioned factory-authorized McLaren F1 technician based at McLaren Philadelphia. "This report (which is available for inspection to qualified bidders) summarized that "it is evident that this vehicle has been well cared for during its current and previous ownership, being in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition." The auction for the car will take place from August 13 to 16 at the RM Sotheby's Monterey event. McLaren F1 Car History The McLaren F1 remains a special car in the history of road cars. It was the first car in the world to achieve ground effect downforce. Gordon Murray, the renowned Formula 1 designer, created the car based on his engineering achievements in the sport. In the early 1990s, F1 cars utilized this "ground effect" to generate massive amounts of downforce. This technical development revolved around designing the floor and the underneath parts so that the car gets sucked to the ground. Murray joined the McLaren F1 team from 1987 to 1991 as the Technical Director. In those five seasons, the team won four consecutive Constructors' and Drivers' Championships. These McLaren cars were among the best in F1 history, driven by the legendary Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The designer transitioned from the sport to create a line of road cars that incorporate the advanced technology of the F1 cars. His first model was the McLaren F1, which debuted at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix. For more F1 news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

Dua Lipa's one-off Porsche 911 GT3 RS is for sale at auction

One of the only things louder than pop music fans screaming at a concert of their favorite artists is the sound of a naturally aspirated flat-six engine revving to 9,000 RPMs. If you are a Porsche 911 enthusiast, or a fan of Dua Lipa's music ― or both ― then an ongoing auction will catch your attention. RM Sotheby's is offering a one-off Porsche "Dua Lipa Rennstall" GT3 RS at auction from now till July 31. The proceeds will go to the Sunny Hill Foundation, which will aid Kosovan culture and arts. Pop and performance The three-time Grammy-winning artist partnered with Porsche AG and Radical22 to bring the vehicle to life. The car was first revealed at the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix back in May. It takes the illustrious GT3 RS and makes it even more unique. Equipped with 518 horsepower and a massive wing supplying downforce, this 911 is a dedicated track weapon. With the Weissach package optioned, lightweight drivetrain components and magnesium wheels cut up to 33 pounds to maximize the cars performance capabilities. What makes this car special While the car may drive like every other GT3 RS, the one-of-a-kind paint scheme makes it stand out from the rest. The vibrant version displays turquoise, red, green and yellow on the body of the car to pair with its bright red wheels. "Dua Lipa Rennstall" logos can be found on different parts of the exterior. The interior is full of black leather with red stitching. Proceeds will go to a charity founded by Dua Lipa Born in the United Kingdom to Kosovo Albanian parents, Dua Lipa founded the Sunny Hill Foundation in 2018 to provide support for Kosovan communities. Thirty scholarships for young women in Kosovo have been awarded by the organization, giving recipients access to careers in STEM. 17 NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) and cultural centers have been supported by the organization as well. How much can the car be expected to sell for? For a brand new 992-generation 911 GT3 RS, the starting manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) hovers around $250,000 before options. Considering how strongly GT3 RS models have been holding their value in recent years, the price will be much higher than when the vehicle was first released. The fact that this special model is a one-off with a collaboration from a very famous musician will make it cost a pretty penny. We will have to wait for the results to see what the car will fetch at the auction. For more information on the vehicle, go to
