Lionel Messi's Argentina Drop Kerala Plans Due To Scheduling Clash: Minister
Argentina's football team and Lionel Messi will not visit Kerala, announced V Abdurahiman. Messi's India tour includes Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, meeting PM Modi.
Argentina's national football team, led by the legendary Lionel Messi, will not be visiting Kerala, state Sports Minister V Abdurahiman announced on Monday.
Previously, the minister had asserted that the Messi-led Argentina team would visit the state as the government had announced, and that the sponsor had already covered the match fee for the event.
Addressing reporters on Monday, he revealed that the foreign team informed them about facing difficulties in visiting Kerala in October this year. However, the sponsor indicated, 'we are interested only in a visit in the month of October."
Earlier, Abdurahiman had mentioned that the team was more likely to come in October or November this year, and they would be treated as state guests, with their security, accommodation, and other facilities provided by the government.
Where Will Messi Visit On His Visit To India?
If everything goes according to plan, football fans in Kolkata will have their first glimpse of the iconic Lionel Messi after a decade. Kolkata will be the first stop on Messi's whirlwind tour across Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, concluding with a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On December 13, Messi's schedule begins at 9 am with a meet-and-greet event, followed by the unveiling of a 70-foot statue of him at Lake Town Sribhumi on VIP Road. Organisers claim this will be the tallest statue of the World Cup winner globally. He will then proceed to Eden Gardens for the GOAT Concert and GOAT Cup from 12 noon to 1.30 pm. Messi will play in a seven-a-side soft-ball game with Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes, John Abraham, and Bhaichung Bhutia. The event will be ticketed, with prices starting at Rs 3,500, expecting a crowd of 68,000. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to felicitate Messi.
In the evening, Messi will travel to Ahmedabad for a private event hosted by the Adani Foundation. He will then head to Mumbai for events on December 14, including a meet-and-greet at CCI at 3.45 pm, followed by the GOAT Concert and GOAT Cup at Wankhede Stadium at 5.30 pm. Despite rumours, Messi will not play cricket; the celebration will feature Indian celebrities. He will also interact with the Indian football team, including Sunil Chhetri.
On December 15, Messi will be in New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, followed by a GOAT Concert and GOAT Cup at Feroz Shah Kotla. At each city, Messi will conduct a masterclass with children to inspire the next generation of Indian footballers. There will be no event in Kerala. Messi is expected to travel with a large entourage, including footballers.
Lionel Messi's Proposed Itinerary:
December 12: Arrival in Kolkata (10pm).
December 13 (Kolkata): 9am — Meet and greet event; Statue unveiling (70-feet) at Lake Town Sribhumi, VIP Road; 12 noon to 1.30pm — GOAT Concert at Eden Gardens followed by GOAT Cup; December 13 (Evening): Adani Foundation private event at Shantigram, Ahmedabad.

Messi's Kerala visit called off as Argentina pulls out of 2025 match deal
KOCHI: The uncertainty has ended, on a sour note. Superstar Lionel Messi and his Argentina team will not play in Kerala this year. Having reassured football fans several times over the past eight months that the world champions would play in Kerala, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Monday finally conceded that the much-hyped visit is not happening. While the Argentina Football Association has expressed willingness to consider the March 2026 window, the state government has decided not to accept that arrangement, the minister said. 'What we agreed for was a match here in 2025. But in a recent communication, the AFA has breached the agreement,' Abdurahiman told the TNIE. He said the state government had reached an agreement with the AFA to have Messi and company playing in Kerala this October, the Argentine football body has conveyed that the deal is not possible anymore. 'This has happened after the transfer of funds required in line with the agreement,' the minister said. He said the initial communication was made as the AFA sent an invoice via email, offering the October international break. 'The agreement was made almost six months ago and we were awaiting clearances from the finance department, Reserve Bank of India, and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs. After that, we successfully transferred the funds. Last week, we received the communication indicating the postponement,' the minister said. Further, he said the state government has officially conveyed to the Argentine Football Association that a 2026 window is unacceptable.

Siraj scripts Oval miracle
London: The perseverant Mohammed Siraj's warrior spirit steered India to a series-levelling six-run victory over England in the fifth and final Test here on Monday, bringing a fitting end to one of the most intensely fought and drama-filled showdowns in recent times. With four wickets in hand and 35 runs to get, England held the edge before start of play but the gladiator in Siraj made life hell for the opposition batters from ball one. In the end, his effort, complemented quite well by Prasidh Krishna at the other end, left England short by the thinnest of margins and allowed In dia to sign off 2-2 in the high-pressure five-match rubber. Siraj was deservedly adjudged player of the match for his nine-wicket match haul for the team that was missing its regular pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in this game due to his workload management. "I woke up in the morning and checked google on my phone and took out a 'Believe' emoji wallpaper and told myself that I will do it for the country," the effervescent 31-year-old said in a post-match interaction, joy and relief both apparent on his face despite a tired body that delivered 185.3 overs in the series. Prasidh Krishna, who had four balls left from his 23rd over overnight, bowled a short ball to start with and Jamie Overton did well to pull it away for a four. An inside edge the following ball meant back to back fours for England, reducing the target to 27 runs. Siraj, India's stoic warrior in the series, made the old ball talk in his opening over from the pavilion end and immediately got the ball to shape away. The dangerous Jamie Smith (2) was beaten in the first two balls before a third one in the off-stump area took the outside edge on way to the keeper, causing the sizeable Indian fandom in the stadium to erupt in unison. Every ball of that Siraj over was an event. Following the much-needed breakthrough, a half chance was created against Gus Atkinson the very next ball on the fifth stump but that half chance was not taken by K L Rahul at second slip. In his following over, Siraj foxed Overton with a nip backer as the batter expected the bowler to continue with the off-stump line. The on-field decision was reviewed by Overton but the ball was just clipping the leg-stump. England still needed 20 to win at that stage. Prasidh backed up Siraj from the other end by reducing England to 350 for nine, a full ball trapping Josh Tongue in front and drawing a deafening roar from the partisan crowd. What followed next would feature among the great moments of on-field bravado. A game after Rishabht Pant came out to bat with a fractured foot for India, Chris Woakes walked into the centre with a tied broken left arm, prompting everyone in the stadium to stand in respect.

TG athletes can gain from new sports policy
If Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has his say and goes all-out to implement his ambitious sports agenda, then the State, and its capital city in particular, will boast of world-class sports infrastructure across disciplines in the next couple of years. On the face of it, this is a praiseworthy effort as the bane of the Indian political apparatus has been the insipid promotion of sports, baring a select few. Budgetary allocations for sports have never been inspirational. In fact, the neglect is such that some allocations have been reduced here and there. The ambitiously carved out 32-page sports policy unveiled by Revanth Reddy the other day makes for a wonderful reading as he promises everything under the moon to realise his dream of making the state the hub of international sports. The comprehensive vision lays stress on strengthening governance, boosting infrastructure, and ushering in a breathtaking sports ecosystem that would result in the emergence of medal-winning athletes. There is no doubt that once he goes about the implementation process and enhances budgetary allocations, there would be smiles on the faces of countless sportspersons, coaches and the support staff. Over a period, Telangana can indeed be the envy of the nation going by the manner it brings about the best of infrastructure and sports avenues, including supporting budding talent coming from the poorer strata. Alas, carried away by the moment, Reddy revealed the politician in him when he spoke rather exaggeratedly that Hyderabad would be fit enough to host some Olympic disciplines by 2036. This is too ambitious a remark given that preparing grounds and facilities and putting in place infrastructure of an extraordinary kind for the mega event is no child's play. What the city has, as of now, is not sound enough to host even a fraction of the events that feature in Olympics. He should take cue from his political mentor N Chandrababu Naidu, who, in his effort to provide the best of facilities for the 2002 National Games, came up with the finest stadiums and playing surfaces. Budget was no problem. J Jayalalithaa constructed the magnificent JN stadium in nine months. Can Revanth Reddy emulate these records? The fact is that the stadiums constructed by Naidu like GMC Balayogi athletics stadium, KVBR stadium, tennis complex and the velodrome are all outdated as the wear and tear must have worn them out. They need to be refurbished before the city is good enough to host the National Games two years down the line, towards which Reddy is to approach the Indian Olympic Association. However, realising the herculean task that lies up ahead, the Chief Minister has played his masterstroke-a Public Private Participation (PPP). This will go a long way in helping him realise the dream of nurturing Olympic gold medallists and world champions across disciplines. Adding to this is the smart move to constitute a 14-member Board of Governors to oversee handling of the Telangana Sports Development Fund (TSDF). Featuring some big names from the world of sports and industry, including Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand and Bhaichung Bhutia, it will be headed by industrialist Sanjeev Goenka, which ensures transparent and accountable utilisation of resources that will be raised through the PPP mode. A good beginning has been made as the state was able to sign MoUs with many keen investors and sponsors. This can help promote exchange programmes with other nations and invest in proven international coaches. Hopefully, this will mark the beginning of rewarding days for sportspersons from Telangana.
