'Nightmare' Neighbour fined for rat infested garden in Melton Mowbray

A man has been handed a court bill for £1,200 for failing to tidy his 'nightmare' overgrown garden. Richard Bates, who lives in Melton Mowbray near Leicester, was approached by his local council in September 2024 over the overgrown vegetation at the front of his house. He later got formal warnings and a fixed penalty notice, before council workers eventually moved in to tidy up the site. They were tasked with clearing the 'very overgrown vegetation and any other items that could provide food and harbour vermin'. While carrying out the work, they found a rat's nest in the garden, which Melton Borough Council described as a 'nightmare'. On July 9 at Leicester Magistrates' Court, the matter was found proved in Bates' absence and he received a £500. More Trending He was also ordered to pay £500 towards the council's costs and a victim charge of £200, while the council said he would also be recharged for the cost of the works. Bates was found proved of failing to comply with a community protection notice. Councillor Sarah Cox, portfolio holder for corporate finance, property and resources at the council, said: 'Even with support from our teams, the resident failed to adhere to the conditions set out to him, forcing us to take necessary action to keep the area clean and free of pests. 'We take issues such as anti-social behaviour very seriously. 'If a supportive approach fails, we will not hesitate to enforce and act to keep our communities a safe and thriving place to live.' Griffins blamed his behaviour on being intoxicated HUMILIATING ATTACK Man brutally beaten up by friend, stripped naked and paraded through village while neighbours filmed him A MAN has been jailed after brutally beating up a friend and parading him naked through the streets. Thug Karl Griffins, 42, received a huge sentence after the horrifying ordeal was caught on camera by neighbours. 3 A man was paraded naked through the streets of Penclawdd on January 30 Credit: Alamy 3 Karl Griffins was jailed for 31 months Credit: South Wales Police Swansea Crown Court heard that Griffins spent much of the day and evening of January 30 at a friend's house in the Welsh village of Penclawdd. According to prosecutor Crag Jones, Griffins received a phone call and left the flat before returning and locking the door behind him. Then, he told everyone inside that they couldn't leave. Next, the court heard that he took the phones of his friend and his friend's partner and accused them of stealing from them though it was unclear whether he was accusing them of stealing money or drugs. Griffins refused to return the couple's phones and then beat the pair with his friend's girlfriend's crutches. The court heard that he punched his friend in the head, before demanding that he removed his clothes. Reportedly, Griffins told his friend that they were 'going for a walk' and 'paraded him naked around the streets'. Mobile phone footage of the victim near the Penclawdd CK store was recorded during the ordeal, before Griffins returned his friend to the flat. The 42-year-old smashed his friend's TV before calling the police and saying: 'Someone better come and get me, I'm going to kill someone.' Griffins was arrested and told authorities that he had gone to his friend's house after arguing with his mother. Moment riot cops smash shield into man's face and 'knock his teeth out' in clash after migrant 'sexually assaulted' girl He accused the friend of stealing from him and admitted to parading him naked in a bid to humiliate him. Before appearing in the dock for sentencing, Griffins pleaded guilty to a slew of crimes including battery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and kidnapping. The 42-year-old was then slapped with a 31 month prison sentence, with half of his sentence to be served behind bars. His defence said that no disagreement between Griffins and his friend "could not remotely justify the level of humiliation and violence" caused by his client. He added that it was clear in the video footage that the victim was distressed as "he was marched through the centre of Penclawdd in a state of undress". Griffins' defence said that his client's actions could be explained through him being intoxicated and that he was now facing his addiction to controlled drugs. The 42-year-old has been granted enhanced-prisoner status at HMP Swansea and allegedly hopes that his former friend can forgive him in the future. Griffins has a history of criminal activity, including non-domestic burglaries, supplying Class A drugs and weapons offences.

On this day: Flintshire adoption scandal told in documentary

Alan and Judith Kilshaw, who lived in Buckley at the time, made headlines on both sides of the Atlantic in 2000 when they paid £8,200 to adopt twin baby girls from a young American mother, Tranda. The scandal involved the single mother allegedly selling her twins to two different couples for cash - once to another couple in the US, before snatching them back to be sold to a different couple in the UK, Alan and Judith. The twins, Kiara and Keyara, were initially placed with new parents Vickie and Richard who lived in California - who it's alleged paid £4,000 for the children. Alan and Judith, who already had four children, travelled to the US to meet Tranda who had sold the twins to them after reportedly snatching them away from Vickie and Richard. The Buckley couple, who believed they had adopted the twins, renamed them Belinda and Kimberley. A custody battle then began between the two couples, with the twins eventually being given to a different family entirely back in the US. Events surrounding what's come to be known as the 'cash for babies' scandal were covered in the Prime Video documentary Three Mothers, Two Babies and a Scandal in 2022. But this time last year, a Channel 5 documentary launched to bring the gripping tale back to life. 'The Baby Scandal That Shocked The World' was released in July 2024. It revisits the heart-breaking case from the perspective of the women involved - the birth mother and the two adoptive mothers. The documentary synopsis reads: "The story of the internet adoptions of twin babies by two separate families on two different continents, and the transatlantic custody battle and media storm that ensued. "The programme revisits the custody case for the twin girls through each of the mothers' eyes, Tranda, the birth mother; Vickie, the American adoptive mother and Judith, the Welsh adoptive mother." This story was first reported on by Arron Evans on July 20, 2024.
