'The 35-km corridor from Hebbal to the airport is choked with traffic due to rising industrial activity and the emergence of commercial hubs. Although there is an existing elevated road, its efficiency is compromised by traffic signals and pedestrian crossings,' Shivakumar wrote. He added that a signal-free, dedicated flyover would drastically cut travel time for airport passengers, industrial freight vehicles, and daily commuters.
The proposal comes amid increasing concerns about Bengaluru's traffic woes, especially on arterial routes leading to the airport. Shivakumar emphasised that the new flyover could serve as a critical lifeline for the city's mobility, given the surging passenger numbers and airport expansion plans. Crucial meetings in New Delhi
Apart from this, the Deputy Chief Minister urged the Centre to expedite work on other critical road and metro infrastructure. He called for the widening of the Bengaluru–Kanakapura highway into a six-lane road and demanded the completion of a 7-km stretch that connects the toll plaza at Kaggalipura on the city's outskirts.

Raising concerns over long-standing compensation issues, Shivakumar pressed the Centre to release funds for families affected by land acquisition for the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR). Despite construction beginning in 2009, many landowners along the Dobbspet–Magadi–Ramanagara–Harohalli route are still awaiting compensation.
One of the most ambitious proposals discussed was the construction of a 60-km tunnel road to link Bengaluru's east-west and north-south corridors. Estimated to cost ₹ 30,000 crore — about ₹ 500 crore per kilometre — the tunnel would connect NH-7 and NH-4, offering a potential gamechanger in tackling the city's chronic traffic bottlenecks. Shivakumar sought financial backing from the Union government to enable the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to implement the tunnel project in partnership with the state.
In addition, Shivakumar met Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss the progress and future plans of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. He urged the Centre to clear the proposed 44.65 km stretch under Namma Metro Phase 3. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is also being prepared for another 37 km of expansion, which is expected to boost mass transit in the city significantly.

Kolkata: Trinamool MP Mala Roy on Tuesday accused Centre of hiding behind laws to avoid answering a specific question she had posed in Lok Sabha on identity proofs considered valid citizenship documents in India. To Roy's question on ID proofs, junior home minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar replied on Tuesday: "The Citizenship Act, 1955, as amended in 2004, provides central govt to compulsorily register every citizen of India and issue a national identity card to them. The procedure for the same has been laid down in the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Card) Rules, 2003." Roy said: "I am not at all satisfied with the response from the Union minister. It seems to me that the central govt tried to evade the question. This govt cannot provide a clear answer to any of our questions, and this instance was no exception." Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini says SYL talks a ‘positive step forward'
Chandigarh: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed cautious optimism on Tuesday following a fresh round of talks with Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Singh Mann , mediated by Union Jal Shakti minister C R Paatil, over the decades-old Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal dispute. Speaking after the meeting in New Delhi, Saini said: "Today's meeting has taken a step forward. The previous meeting on July 9 also occurred in a positive atmosphere." He added that the states would now proceed "in a positive environment" during the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for Aug 13. The Haryana CM declined to divulge specific details of the discussion but clarified that the talks remained focused on the SYL canal — a critical infrastructure project aimed at water-sharing — and not on any alternative 'Yamuna-Satluj' canal. Saini was joined by chief principal secretary Rajesh Khullar and senior officials from the irrigation and related departments. His counterpart, Bhagwant Mann, attended alongside Punjab officials. Tuesday's session marked the fifth high-level meeting between the neighbouring states since the Supreme Court directed the Centre to mediate the long-standing water dispute, which dates back to the 1980s. LS passes bill for quota for STs in Goa assembly
Panaji: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill to pave the way for Goa to have an scheduled tribes (ST) quota in the state elections for the first time. While Goa will likely see four reserved ST seats by the time it next goes to polls in 2027, the bill also empowers the Election Commission to effect delimitation and readjust constituencies to give proper representation to STs in the legislative assembly. This was the first bill passed in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, which has been rocked by protests by the INDIA bloc since it began. Chief minister Pramod Sawant informed the House about the passing of the bill, which was moved by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who said that the bill was earlier debated with the participation of all parties. It now has to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha. However, with the addition of new tribes—Kunbi, Gawda, and Velip—to the list of scheduled tribes, their numbers increased considerably. The ST community is now estimated to be around 1.5 lakh, and the number of reserved seats will be based on the revised population figure. As per the 2001 census, the number of STs in Goa was recorded at 566, while the total population was more than 13 lakh. With the addition of the new tribes to the ST list, their numbers increased to over 1.4 lakh in a population of 14.5 lakh as per the 2011 census. Scheduled castes, with a population of around 25,500, already have one seat reserved (Pernem) in the 40-member assembly. 'Thus, a peculiar situation has arisen in the state, wherein the population of the STs vis-a-vis the population of SCs is considerably higher. Though one assembly constituency is reserved for SCs in the state, no seats are reserved for STs, and they are unable to avail the constitutional benefit of reservation as per the provisions of Article 332 of the Constitution,' the bill states. The bill passed on Tuesday empowers the EC to amend the delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies order, 2008. 'The EC shall take into consideration the revised population figures of the scheduled tribes and readjust the legislative assembly constituency having regard to the provisions of articles of the Constitution and sections of the Delimitation Act, 2002,' the bill states. In Aug 2023, the Centre said the delimitation exercise would only begin in 2026. State govt had asked Centre to constitute a delimitation commission to identify four assembly constituencies to be reserved for the ST community.
