Upskirted, assaulted, accused of faking their music skills: Why female DJs need to be 'bulletproof'

To see Koven's Katie Boyle perform live is beyond impressive. Hailing from Luton, she is one of the most influential women in drum 'n' bass today, an artist who pioneered the art of singing live while DJing.
Although she's now been doing it for 12 years, her vast knowledge doesn't silence the trolls online.
"There is a real bad misogyny online against women," she says of the industry, with plenty of critics refusing to "believe they're doing what they say they're doing, and that's been quite a hard thing to combat".
Koven is a duo. In the studio, Boyle collaborates with producer Max Rowat; live, she performs and mixes alone. They have just released their second album, Moments In Everglow.
While both Boyle and Rowat are equally involved in making tracks, a minority of very vocal fans still refuse to accept she does anything other than sing.
"I will always be accused of the male half doing more on anything to do with technology," says Boyle. "The amount of comments [I get] to say, 'she didn't make this'. No explanation as to why they think that it is, just purely because [I'm] a woman, which is just mad."
While Boyle loves performing live, there are moments, she admits, where being one of the few women on the scene can feel unsafe.
"I've had some awful incidences," she says. "I had someone run on stage and completely grab me, hand down my top, down my trousers, while I was on the stage, which is crazy because you think that's happening in front of an audience. I mean, this guy literally had to be plied off me.
"That was when I did think, 'I need to bring someone with me to most places'. I didn't feel safe travelling around by myself."
'You get trolled for everything'
Sadly, Boyle isn't alone. Over a 30-year career, DJ Paulette has scaled the heights of dance music fame, playing throughout Europe, with a residency back in the day at Manchester's Hacienda.
"Let's just say I have two towels on my rider and it's not just because I sweat a lot," she jokes, miming a whack for those around her.
"I've spent time in DJ booths where I've had a skirt on and people have been taking pictures up my skirt. People think upskirting is a joke... and I got fed up with it." Wearing shorts, she says, she still ended with "people with their hands all over me". Now, she sticks to trousers. "But we shouldn't have to alter the way we look for the environment that we work in."
She admits, in order to stick it out, she's had to bulletproof herself. "You get trolled for everything, for the way you look - if you put on weight, if you've lost weight."
Not only is the discourse towards female DJs different online, she says, she has also been repeatedly told by those working in the industry that because she's a woman, she has a sell-by date.
"I went for dinner with three guys... one of them said to me, 'you know Paulette there is no promoter or organiser who is ever going to employ a black female DJ with grey hair', and they all laughed.
"That was them saying to me that my career was over, and I was in my 40s. At the time, I felt crushed... I think it really does take women who have a real steel will to make their way through."
'I will not stop talking about it'
As the great and the good of the dance world gather in Ibiza for the industry's annual International Music Summit, with dance music more popular than ever there is of course much to party about.
But for BBC Radio 1 broadcaster and DJ Jaguar, one of this year's summit's cohosts, some serious conversations also need to be had.
"You can get off the plane and look at the billboards around Ibiza and it's basically white men - David Guetta, Calvin Harris, and they are incredible artists in their own right - but the women headliners, there's barely any visibility of them, it's awful."
She adds: "I will not stop talking about it because it is the reality."
Trolling and safety are also big concerns. "You're in these green rooms, there's a lot of people there, drinking and doing other things... and I've walked into green rooms where I felt incredibly uncomfortable, especially when I was a bit younger. I was on my own, it's like 2am, and you have to watch yourself."
Male DJs don't have the same stories
She says she has female friends who have had drinks spiked when they were DJing. But her male friends? "They don't have the same stories to tell me."
Creamfields, arguably the UK's biggest dance festival, is emblematic of the gender imbalance. It remains one of the least representative festivals in terms of female artists, with last year's line-up more than 80% male.
Laila MacKenzie, founder of Lady Of The House, a community that supports and tries to encourage more women into dance music, says the talent pipeline problem isn't helped by the current discourse online.
"There is a real damaging factor how people can be really nasty online and really nasty in the media and how that actually may discourage and demotivate women from stepping forward into their talent," she says.
In reality, for so many women working within dance music, the trolling can be so unpleasant that it's drowning out the good.
"There is so much positivity and so many lovely and supportive people," says Boyle. "But unfortunately it feels like the negative and the toxic energy is just louder sometimes."

It's a zombie reboot — Irvine Welsh's new Trainspotting novel

After culture becomes dead, it becomes undead. This is the era we are in now: the era of the zombie reboot or 'necro-sequel', as the writer Sam Kriss recently termed the phenomenon. There are three Oasis albums in the official Top Five. Pulp had a triumphant Glastonbury. No longer do sequels spawn from recent successes but from movies two or three decades old: Twisters, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Gladiator II, 28 Years Later. It's almost as if our data-ravaged landscape, haunted by the AI-generated mutants of our collective memory, is preventing us from thinking new thoughts. And now here comes Irvine Welsh's sequel to his drugs-and-lowlife debut, Trainspotting, the great It book of 1993, even if it is chiefly remembered via Danny Boyle's 1996 film. Who can forget the opium suppositories, the wads of soiled toilet roll or the dead baby, all captured with wit and verve in a pungent Scots vernacular? 'Sometimes ah think that people become junkies just because they subconsciously crave a wee bit ay silence,' observed the cynical skaghead Mark Renton. • Irvine Welsh: why I've turned Trainspotting into a disco album There have already been five spin-offs featuring characters from Trainspotting, including Porno (2002), set ten years later, and Skagboys (2012), a prequel that connected intravenous drug use and the subsequent Aids epidemic to rampant working-class unemployment under Margaret Thatcher. So what makes Men In Love, billed as an immediate Trainspotting sequel, different? And why is Welsh, 66, publishing this now? He admitted in one interview that it was partly to capitalise on nostalgia for the 1990s, 'because people had lives then' — before the internet, mobile phones and social media hijacked them. And what lives Welsh's characters led. Except in Men In Love, much of the grime has been wiped away to reveal a kind of cartoonish social comedy. We are at the dawn of the 1990s and the strapline 'choose life' has been replaced by 'choose love'. The self-conscious cynic Mark Renton, the manipulative lothario Sick Boy, the loveable loser Spud and the Rod Stewart-loving sociopath Begbie kick heroin and are on the hunt for some 'top drawer shagging'. Sick Boy is the true spirit animal of the novel, a Rochester-esque figure of sexual anarchy who fantasises about having his way with his future mother-in-law and his (hoped for) unborn daughter. He is hustling his way round London, trying to make it in porn, but investing most of his energies into 'hunting bigger game' — ie, 'posh fanny'. In rehab, he meets Amanda, the 'pampered princess of Isleworth', whose father is a high-ranking civil servant in Thatcher's government. Meanwhile, he's pursuing a hectic 'bedroom game' with: a 'fat bird' called Ashley ('Fashley'); her 'toothsome' best friend who is horribly injured in a car accident (he runs his hand up 'her good leg' in hospital); a smelly French minx called Fabienne; 'willowy' Marianne, his ex-lover in Leith (anal only, out of loyalty to Amanda); then, after he proposes to Amanda, her chief bridesmaid or 'ridesmaid', Jocelyn (also 'willowy'). The novel builds towards a Jilly Cooper-esque society wedding where the in-laws will meet the outlaws. • Read more book reviews and interviews — and see what's top of the Sunday Times Bestsellers List Spud and Begbie (as well as secondary characters like Second Prize) remain in Leith. Spud is earnestly striving for a cosier life with long-suffering Alison. He is attracted to the idea of gaining 'better litrisy' through adult education classes, but the path to redemption is littered with old ladies' purses. Begbie, 'who never could look at a face without wanting to punch it', is in and out of prison, convinced that Renton (aka the 'Treacherous Ginger Bastard') is mocking him. You will recall how Renton double-crossed his friends at the end of Trainspotting. 'Ah'm gaunny scalp that ginger oaffay the c***'s heid. Wi a f***in machete. Just slice the top ay ehs f***in heid oaf,' Begbie vows. In one of the book's darkest scenes — all of which are played for laughs, including sexual assault — Begbie, fresh from a menacing visit to the mother of his children, June (a 'mingin c***'), goes to a bar showing BBC coverage of the Tiananmen Square massacre. It puts him in the mood for a Chinese takeaway, so he buys a chicken chow mein on the way home, marvelling at how 'they Chinky army c***s dinnae f*** aboot'. He vows to use similar tactics to bed June's sister, Olivia. At this point, you might remember the rumour that Trainspotting didn't make the Booker Prize shortlist in 1993 because it offended the sensibilities of two female judges. This partly explains the disingenuous author's note at the end of the novel declaring that because it's set in the late 1980s, many of the characters 'express themselves in ways that we would now consider offensive and discriminatory'. But the problem isn't the rancid attitudes of the characters. It's that Welsh doesn't offer any other perspective on the women, the gay characters or the 'chinkies' other than the one that leaves them totally dehumanised. There are a huge number of women in the novel and they fall into two camps, those that are sexy and those that are 'pathetic old post-sexual mutation[s]'. The sexy ones are distinguished by the tightness of their vaginas and whether they pack 'unsightly blubber in the arse'. But what unites all the women is that they are utterly passive and devoid of opinions, although there is some evidence they have feelings: 'If women must have mental health issues — and they must,' Sick Boy reflects, 'always best to err on the side of anorexia rather than obesity.' Meanwhile, Renton, hauled up in Amsterdam, is the most enlightened man in love. He moons over the budding artist Monique, who refuses to confine herself to one lover. But his storyline about getting into dance music (yawn) is lacklustre. His voice — which, like Sick Boy's, is now rendered in standard English to reflect their move away from Scotland — is so drippy that there's very little to engage. Men In Love is a book that possibly sounds more amusing in summary than in its 530-page reality. Much of it is perfectly entertaining. When Sick Boy watches the entrance of his baby son into the world, he struggles with his complex emotions. 'It dawns on me that this is why men need football: our inability to give birth … The ministry of frost that housed my heavy heart melts, falls out of me like a shite I'll never be able to get back up my arsehole.' But there's no disguising that Welsh's prose has lost some of its elasticity and there's nothing as daringly excessive as, say, Renton having sex with his dead brother's pregnant girlfriend on his coffin. Ultimately, it reads like a literary car boot sale. You can pick up the odd gem and enjoy spending a few hours in a time warp. MOVIE REVIEW: We see if zombies are still all the rage in horror sequel '28 Years Later'

Helmer Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland take things in fresh, wild directions. It's been 18 years since 28 Weeks Later hit cinemas and in that time the zombie genre has been, pardon the pun, done to death - in film and TV. Director and writer Danny Boyle and Alex Garland faced a challenge, then, to inject fresh blood into the returning franchise. ‌ They manage to achieve this through engaging storytelling and character development that get ever more wild as events proceed. ‌ Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) are part of group of survivors of the rage virus living on a small island. The pair head to the mainland on a mission that leads to self-discovery and mystifying secrets. In terms of style and execution, Years is a very different movie to its predecessors and Boyle and Garland bravely don't rest on their laurels by taking a few chances. From the brisk, nail-biting opening being introduced by the Teletubbies' hopeful spiel on a TV, Boyle gets very creative behind the camera. He hasn't lost the ability to shoot a white-knuckle-ride set-piece either; zombies pursuing Jamie and Spike across the causeway is suspense at its finest. ‌ The sound design and music are hypnotically superb, with the chilling use of Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots found in the flick's trailer a welcome inclusion. It's hard to fault any of the performances either. Taylor-Johnson and Williams share a tight-knit, loving bond that is put to the test, Jodie Comer has many poignant moments as Jamie's wife Isla, Ralph Fiennes ( Dr Kelson) is a magnetic, enigmatic presence and Christopher Fulford's Sam is a calming, down-to-Earth companion. I had heard the climax was insane and divisive - and boy, is it - but I'm willing to see what the second part of Boyle's new trilogy - January's The Bone Temple - delivers before passing too much judgement. ‌ Because, as a whole, 28 Years Later is a wonderfully directed, mesmerizing return to a rage-filled world not shy of hope, personal growth and madness in all its forms. ● What is your favourite film in the zombie series?
