Different suppliers in South Africa have notified the National Consumer Commission of seven car brands that they are recalling because of various faults on them.
The cars being recalled are Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300c, Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA (118), S-Class (model series 223), Audi, VW Polo Sedan and Volvo XC90.
The faults in the car can cause severe injuries. Therefore, consumers are required to visit their nearest authorised dealership to have them checked out.

Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Chrysler 300c
NCC said Stellantis South Africa, a subsidiary of the global automaker Stellantis is recalling the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Chrysler 300c models due to a defect in the Takata airbag.
'According to the supplier, the passenger airbag inflator may rupture, due to excessive internal pressure, during normal airbag deployment events.
'In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, which may result in serious injury or death.'
The cars the supplier is recalling were sold from 2014 to 2016. Those who have purchased the cars are requested to visit the nearest authorised dealership for a repair or replacement of the airbag.
Citroen C4, DS4 and DS5
Stellantis South Africa is also recalling the Citroen C4, DS4 and DS5 models sold from 2009 to 2016.
The issue with these cars is that the driver's and passenger's airbag inflators may rupture during the airbag deployment phase.
'The potentially high energetic deployment of the inflator may lead to metal fragments detaching from the bursting inflator, and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver or occupants in the vehicle, capable of causing serious injury or possibly death in a worst-case scenario.'
Mercedes-Benz CLA and S-Class
Another supplier recalling cars is Mercedes-Benz AG South Africa. NCC said the models that are being recalled are the CLA (118 platforms) and the S-Class (model series 223).
The supplier told NCC that 'the length of the brake hoses on the rear axle might not have met the specifications.'
The brake hoses of the rear axle might come into contact with surrounding components, chafe over time, and subsequently cause brake fluid to leak.
'According to the supplier, this will result in reduced braking performance in one of the two brake circuits, thereby increasing the risk of an accident due to brake fluid loss.'
The supplier said the brake hose issue in the CLA models is the same issue as the one with the S-Class models. 'The brake hoses may gradually start to leak in hot and moist areas after an extended operating period.'
As a result, the brake fluid could leak out, impairing brake power in one of the two brake circuits, increasing the risk of an accident.
The models with this issue were produced between 2020 and 2023.

Audi E-Tron GT
Audi South Africa is recalling Audi E-Tron GT produced on and after 27 October 2021 due to a high-voltage battery.
'This is caused by some individual cell modules of the high-voltage battery that may display technical irregularities.
'The high-voltage battery may overheat, resulting in an acute fire hazard, with the associated risk of severe fatal injuries to people inside and or outside the vehicle, as well as significant property damage,' according to the supplier.
Audi told NCC that 46 affected cars were sold nationally. Those who bought the cars after 27 October 2021 are required to visit any Audi SA-approved Dealer for checking and, if necessary, module replacement.
VW Polo Sedan
Volkswagen of South Africa is recalling VW Polo Sedan sold nationally from 2 April 2025 onwards.
VW told NCC that the latch plates for the rear seat belt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in the event of powerful deceleration (accident or hard braking), 'there may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury.'
There are 905 Polos with this issue. Those who purchased the car during the period must contact an approved Volkswagen dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components.
Volvo XC90
The seventh car brand to be recalled is Volvo. Volvo Car South Africa is recalling the XC90 model produced between 2020 and 2022.
Volvo told the NCC that there is a potential issue with the high-voltage battery.
'According to the supplier, the issue may cause overheating of the battery cells when the battery is fully charged. In a worst-case scenario, this overheating in the high-voltage battery could lead to a thermal event.'
There are 27 affected XC90 cars. Therefore, it is recommended that consumers visit their nearest authorised agents or dealerships for inspection and, as necessary, replacement of defective components.

Revolut named official title partner of Audi F1 team

British financial technology giant Revolut will become title partner of the Audi Formula One team from next season in a "monumental" multi-year deal, the two parties announced on Wednesday. The fast-growing London-based fintech company was valued at $45bn (R804,836,250,000) last year through a secondary share sale to new and existing investors. Swiss-based Sauber are becoming the factory Audi team in 2026, when Formula One starts a new engine era with major rule changes and an 11th team on the grid with the arrival of Cadillac. Jonathan Wheatley, principal of the Audi team, said the deal had been put together in less than four months and had obvious benefits for the two sides. "If you imagine we need to engage with our fans, we need a partner that's going to help us do that," Wheatley told Reuters in a video call. "We need to expand hugely into the incredible global space Formula One is in at the moment, and we need to become the most attractive team in Formula One." Wheatley said the deal reflected Audi's brand strength and was a "good news story for Formula One". "It's the Audi magnet that's drawing a lot of people here right now," he said, speaking from the team headquarters in Hinwil, Switzerland. Revolut has more than 55-million customers but no physical branches. It gained a banking licence in Britain in 2024, after a three-year wait, and has global expansion plans. Antoine Le Nel, Revolut's chief marketing officer, gave no financial details of the F1 partnership but said the company was in for the long run with Audi and aiming for 100-million customers by 2027. He said Revolut had been looking for a platform to help the company build on its expansion. "I think we have a true opportunity to bring F1 to a huge audience," he told Reuters. "From a retail perspective and a business perspective I think there's going to be a lot of opportunities for us to connect the fan base to the sport through the Revolut platform." Le Nel said Audi taking on established teams in Formula One was like Revolut competing against traditional banks. "If you look at Audi, a very premium German brand dominating its market, it's where we want to be," he said. "It's a way for Revolut to elevate and get to where Audi has been for a long time." Audi said Revolut Business would be extensively integrated into the team's financial operations. Sauber are sixth in the 10 team championship ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix and have scored in their past five races. German driver Nico Hulkenberg celebrated his first F1 podium at Silverstone this month, finishing third in the British Grand Prix in a major boost for the team.

Audi cuts forecast over US tariffs and restructuring costs

German carmaker Volkswagen's premium brand Audi lowered its full-year financial guidance on Monday, citing the impact of higher US import tariffs and ongoing restructuring costs. The Ingolstadt-based company expects revenue of between €65bn (R1,355,406,000,000) and €70bn (R1,459,560,200,000), down from its previous forecast of €67.5bn (R1,407,537,000,000) to €72.5bn (R1,511,687,350,000). Audi also cut its operating margin forecast to 5% to 7%, compared to the earlier range of 7% to 9%. Audi said it is assessing the implications of the trade deal reached between the US and the EU on Sunday. The agreement set a 15% baseline US tariff on imports from the EU, including cars, which had previously faced customs duties of 27.5%. "Should the 15% tariff stay in place long-term, it would put Audi at a competitive disadvantage because its key peers have a more pronounced US production footprint," said Fabio Hoelscher, an analyst from Warburg Research. Audi is among the carmakers most exposed to US tariffs as it has no manufacturing facilities in the US. Though the deal provides clarity on the new tariff regime, enabling better operational and strategic planning, the 15% rate represents a structural shift from the 2.5% rate before US President Donald Trump took office, said Pal Skirta, equity analyst from Metzler Equities. That leaves German carmakers facing persistently higher US tariffs on their exports and long-term competitiveness challenges, he said. The Volkswagen Group also cut its full-year guidance on Friday after taking a $1.5bn (R26,781,448,350) tariff hit in the first half of the year. Global carmakers have booked billions of losses and some issued profit warnings due to US import tariffs. The European industry is also facing stiffening competition from China and domestic regulations aimed at speeding up the electric-vehicle transition.

Another SA vehicle recall: Do you own one of these models?

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed the recall of the Ford Ranger, Everest, EcoSport, and Puma vehicles as notified by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. This is due to several faults in Ford models including some from 2021. Ford has issued a recall for certain 2022 to 2025 model year Ranger and Everest vehicles, specifically the Wildtrak and Platinum variants equipped with 3.0L Lion engines. These light commercial vehicles may have a serious defect where the left-hand camshaft sprocket on the engine could fracture, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly and increasing the risk of an accident due to sudden loss of power while driving. In the affected Ford Puma vehicles manufactured between November 2021 and September 2024, a fuel line may rub against a bracket, causing damage to the fuel line, the NCC said. Over time, this damage may reportedly lead to a fuel leak. In turn, a fuel leak could result in an engine stall or, if there is an ignition source, a fire. 'Owners might notice a fuel odour, fuel leaking beneath the vehicle, or smoke from fuel on a hot surface. The affected Ford Puma vehicles were available on the market from November 2021 to September 2024,' the NCC said. Additionally, Ford has identified a safety concern affecting 2021 to 2022 EcoSport vehicles equipped with a 6F15 automatic transmission. In some of these affected vehicles, the front half shafts may not have been fully inserted into the transmission during assembly. This defect could cause the half shaft to disengage from the transmission. If the half shaft disengages, there is a risk of losing engine power while driving. Moreover, if the vehicle is put in 'Park' without engaging the parking brake, it may roll away unexpectedly. Both conditions significantly increase the risk of an accident. Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said given the risk associated with the reported defects, consumers who own any of these vehicles are urged to immediately contact their nearest Ford authorised dealership for inspection and, if necessary, repair at no cost. The affected vehicles were sold across South Africa. In May, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) also recalled several brands and models sold in South Africa. The vehicle recall was due to various defects found in the vehicles related, among other things, to airbags, axles, batteries, and seatbelts. The affected brands included Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler, Citroën, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW Polo and Sedan, and Volvo. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
