Three men appear in court from Cwmbran and Caerphilly
The three men were accused of drug-driving, speeding, and being threatening and abusive. Their cases were heard at Cardiff Magistrates' Court. Here's a round-up of the cases. Daniel Drury, 43, of Marlborough Road in Cwmbran, was drug-driving just days after being clocked speeding on the motorway. Drury was caught doing 72mph in the 50mph average speed limit on the westbound M4 at Newport between junctions 27 and 28 in a Citroen C4 on December 8. He was then caught drug-driving in a Renault Clio on Tyn-Y-Parc Road in the Whitchurch area of Cardiff on December 11. When tested, he recorded having 212 micrograms of benzoylecgonine – the main metabolite of cocaine – per litre (µg/L) of blood. The legal limit – to exclude accidental exposure – is 50µg/L. He admitted both offences, and was sentenced to a six-month community order at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on July 15. Drury was banned from driving for three years and was made the subject of a six-month curfew between 8pm and 6am. He must also pay £85 in costs. Nathan Edwards, 35, of no fixed abode, threatened another man at a hospital. Edwards was charged with using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour towards a man in Cardiff on May 18 with the intention of causing him fear of or provoking unlawful violence. The defendant, previously of Caerphilly, pleaded guilty, and was jailed for six weeks at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on July 10. The court determined that the offence was so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified, and it was aggravated by it taking place in a hospital. He must also pay £85 in costs and a £154 surcharge. Gareth Silcocks, 41, of William Street in Fleur-De-Lis, was uninsured when he was drug-driving. Silcocks was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Eclipse on Hood Road in Barry on December 18 last year. When tested, he recorded having 3.5µg/L of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in his blood. The legal limit is 2µg/L. Checks also revealed that Silcocks was uninsured at the time. He pleaded guilty to both offences at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on July 15. Silcocks was disqualified from driving for 12 months, and must pay a £465 fine, £85 in costs, and a £186 surcharge.

And not only because of the multitude of interesting design details, but mostly because I can't really figure out what it is and where it fits in. One of the biggest changes made to the new model is its shape. The front end has been heavily redesigned to align it with the latest family look, but the rear end has been shaped to, in Citroen's own word, "create a more fluid and balanced stance". I just find it a bit confusing. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad We're in an automotive era that is seemingly blurring the borders between hatchbacks, coupes, SUVs, and "crossovers" (whatever they are these days) and it's as if the C4 is trying to take a stab at all of the above. A traditional hatchback rear offers plenty of light into the cabin | Citroen That's not to say it's unattractive. Far from it. The sloping hatchback-rear of the C4 gives it a sporty look, which is punctuated by a funky little duck tail spoiler, and the chunky arches and raised ride height give a nod to some SUV traits. There's also a C4 X with a very nicely proportioned coupe-esque body shape, but the car I've just finished getting my head around is the C4. And I quite like it. There are three trim levels, the "You", the "Plus", and the "Max", and base prices start at around £24,000, rising to just this side of £30,000 if you go a bit silly with the spec sheet on a Max version. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There's nothing particularly exciting about the interior, but it's nicely laid out and simple to use | Citroen While its not a small car, the Stellantis platform-sharing ethos has meant this family-sized sort-of-SUV-thingy has the same underpinnings as a Corsa and a Peugeot 2008, so don't expect a large engine. There are two hybrid options, both underwritten by a 1.2-litre, three cylinder engine in different states of tune, and then there's a petrol-only option. But they're all automatics, no manual options are left on the list now. The all-electric E-C4 stablemate is worthy of mention too. And that was it. The infotainment screen isn't a highlight, but you'll probably use your smartphone mirroring system anyway | Citroen True to form with any Citroen, the comfort levels are the highlight. The interior is far from interesting. The Stellantis influence has watered down any French madness, but the seats are rather lovely, and all passengers get plenty of space. It's all light, airy, and a nice place to be. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad What makes it even nicer are the physical controls for the climate settings. They sit below an infotainment system that needs a bit of modernisation. In top models it does include a ChatGPT-based voice control system, but it's not as useful as you'd think. It'll doubtless mature and improve with some ongoing updates, but don't expect a clever concierge service and you won't be disappointed. It's almost worth glossing over the driving experience of the C4, because it's every bit the mundane but safe affair you'd probably expect from a mainstream Stellantis offering. One aspect that is worthy of note, though, is the ride quality. Stellantis appears to be dragging Citroen back to its roots, and giving a lot of thought to the suspension in the latest cars, and it really shows in the C4. It has one of the nicest rides in its class. Rear space and boot space aren't class-leading, but it's roomy enough | Citroen The pay-off, of course, is a fairly wallowy performance in the corners. But with no real power to speak of from any of the drivetrains (even the electric version) that's not exactly going to bother buyers. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Fuel economy is strong, though, emissions are nice and low, and you should expect some tasty monthly deals on anything in the Citroen range, so it makes the more desirable, more powerful engines more accessible. Thankfully, the base spec versions are well equipped, so it's quite an attractive buying proposition, all things considered. There's a lot to like about the C4, then. It's not the most practical option for a family car, and if you're a spirited driver, look elsewhere. But if you fancy something a bit different, keep your eye on the pennies, and long for a sensible interior and a car that's more comfortable than it strictly needs to be, you'd probably get on well with Citroen's new... Did you buy a VW Polo in 2025? It's among six car brands recalled over safety defects
The cars being recalled are Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300c, Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA, S-Class, Audi, VW Polo Sedan and Volvo XC90 The cars being recalled are Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300c, Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA, S-Class, Audi, VW Polo Sedan and Volvo XC90. Pictures: iStock Different suppliers in South Africa have notified the National Consumer Commission of seven car brands that they are recalling because of various faults on them. The cars being recalled are Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300c, Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA (118), S-Class (model series 223), Audi, VW Polo Sedan and Volvo XC90. The faults in the car can cause severe injuries. Therefore, consumers are required to visit their nearest authorised dealership to have them checked out. ALSO READ: Tribunal fines car repairer R100 000 for being 'dishonest and contemptuous' Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Chrysler 300c NCC said Stellantis South Africa, a subsidiary of the global automaker Stellantis is recalling the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Chrysler 300c models due to a defect in the Takata airbag. 'According to the supplier, the passenger airbag inflator may rupture, due to excessive internal pressure, during normal airbag deployment events. 'In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, which may result in serious injury or death.' The cars the supplier is recalling were sold from 2014 to 2016. Those who have purchased the cars are requested to visit the nearest authorised dealership for a repair or replacement of the airbag. Citroen C4, DS4 and DS5 Stellantis South Africa is also recalling the Citroen C4, DS4 and DS5 models sold from 2009 to 2016. The issue with these cars is that the driver's and passenger's airbag inflators may rupture during the airbag deployment phase. 'The potentially high energetic deployment of the inflator may lead to metal fragments detaching from the bursting inflator, and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver or occupants in the vehicle, capable of causing serious injury or possibly death in a worst-case scenario.' Mercedes-Benz CLA and S-Class Another supplier recalling cars is Mercedes-Benz AG South Africa. NCC said the models that are being recalled are the CLA (118 platforms) and the S-Class (model series 223). The supplier told NCC that 'the length of the brake hoses on the rear axle might not have met the specifications.' The brake hoses of the rear axle might come into contact with surrounding components, chafe over time, and subsequently cause brake fluid to leak. 'According to the supplier, this will result in reduced braking performance in one of the two brake circuits, thereby increasing the risk of an accident due to brake fluid loss.' The supplier said the brake hose issue in the CLA models is the same issue as the one with the S-Class models. 'The brake hoses may gradually start to leak in hot and moist areas after an extended operating period.' As a result, the brake fluid could leak out, impairing brake power in one of the two brake circuits, increasing the risk of an accident. The models with this issue were produced between 2020 and 2023. ALSO READ: Product recall: Toys from Takealot, Toys R Us and e-bike batteries pulled over choking, fire hazards Audi E-Tron GT Audi South Africa is recalling Audi E-Tron GT produced on and after 27 October 2021 due to a high-voltage battery. 'This is caused by some individual cell modules of the high-voltage battery that may display technical irregularities. 'The high-voltage battery may overheat, resulting in an acute fire hazard, with the associated risk of severe fatal injuries to people inside and or outside the vehicle, as well as significant property damage,' according to the supplier. Audi told NCC that 46 affected cars were sold nationally. Those who bought the cars after 27 October 2021 are required to visit any Audi SA-approved Dealer for checking and, if necessary, module replacement. VW Polo Sedan Volkswagen of South Africa is recalling VW Polo Sedan sold nationally from 2 April 2025 onwards. VW told NCC that the latch plates for the rear seat belt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in the event of powerful deceleration (accident or hard braking), 'there may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury.' There are 905 Polos with this issue. Those who purchased the car during the period must contact an approved Volkswagen dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components. Volvo XC90 The seventh car brand to be recalled is Volvo. Volvo Car South Africa is recalling the XC90 model produced between 2020 and 2022. Volvo told the NCC that there is a potential issue with the high-voltage battery. 'According to the supplier, the issue may cause overheating of the battery cells when the battery is fully charged. In a worst-case scenario, this overheating in the high-voltage battery could lead to a thermal event.' There are 27 affected XC90 cars. Therefore, it is recommended that consumers visit their nearest authorised agents or dealerships for inspection and, as necessary, replacement of defective components. Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300C Manufactured by Stellantis South Africa between 2014 and 2016, both the Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300C are being recalled due to alarming defects with Takata airbags.
