James Gunn discusses telling Henry Cavill he won't return as Superman, calling it "unfair." Gunn hints at future DCU roles for Cavill.
Amid the thunderous response coming in for the latest release, Superman, director James Gunn reflected on the moment when he had to tell Henry Cavill that he was not returning to the film. Gunn took a trip down memory lane to recall the time when a section of the studio tried to 'force" the casting of Cavill in the film which was 'never part of the equation," which, according to him, created an 'unfair" situation for Cavill.
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, as quoted by Variety, Gunn said, 'The day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back. And I'm like, 'What is going on?' We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do 'Superman.' So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer."
To solve the misunderstanding, James Gunn decided to sit down for a chat with Henry Cavill and disclose the news himself. The director added, 'So, that was really unfortunate. Peter and I [thought] the right thing to do was to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him. And we sat down and we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys."
Gunn also hinted at bringing back Henry Cavill to the future DCU movies. When asked whether it would be 'too confusing" to recast the actor in the DC Universe, the director responded, 'No, as another character? Absolutely not. I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something."
Henry Cavill played the Man of Steel across three DC films from 2013 to 2017. He was replaced by David Corenswet for Gunn's DCU debut feature Superman, which arrived in theatres on July 11.
Alongside David Cornswet, Superman also features Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl).

Sydney Sweeney Unrecognisable As Boxer Christy Martin In First Look From Biopic ‘Christy'

Last Updated: Sydney Sweeney transforms into boxing legend Christy Martin for her upcoming biopic 'Christy', set to premiere at TIFF 2025. Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the ring—literally—for her most dramatic transformation yet. The Euphoria star is all set to portray legendary boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic Christy, and the first official photo from the film is already creating waves. The image, released by Black Bear Pictures on July 21, shows Sweeney looking nearly unrecognisable with Christy Martin's signature dark curls, a muscular frame, and a boxer's fierce intensity. Wearing red gloves, long tassel shorts, a white tank top, and a mouthguard, Sweeney channels Martin's gritty energy in a boxing ring. The film is set to premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September. Sweeney, who is known for her long blonde locks and glamorous red carpet appearances, underwent a stunning physical transformation for the role. In a June 2025 interview with W Magazine, she revealed that she gained over 30 pounds and trained rigorously to match Martin's powerful physique. 'I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour," she shared. 'My body was completely different. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong." The biopic is directed by The King filmmaker David Michôd, who was reportedly stunned by Sweeney's commitment and transformation. Recalling a moment when he saw her again on the set of Euphoria season 3, he said, 'I was stunned by the change in her appearance. I had only seen her as an adorable, tough moppet with late-'80s hair, ready to box. Sydney was happiest when she was in the ring punching and being punched. It was shocking to see her being so glamorous." Sweeney first hinted at her role in Christy back in October 2024 by posting behind-the-scenes photos that showed off her bulked-up physique and ring training. Bruce Willis, 70, Can No Longer Speak, Read Or Walk: What Happened To The Die Hard Actor?

Last Updated: Bruce Willis, diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, can no longer speak, read, or walk, according to recent reports. His condition is said to be stable though. Hollywood icon Bruce Willis, celebrated for unforgettable roles in Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, and The Sixth Sense, is reportedly facing a heartbreaking decline in his health due to frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Recent reports claim that the 70-year-old actor is no longer able to speak, read, or walk as the degenerative condition progresses. Willis was initially diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, which later advanced to FTD, a rare form of dementia affecting areas of the brain responsible for language, behaviour, and movement. The actor's condition has continued to evolve, though his family stated in April 2025 that his health remains 'stable." Sources close to the actor report that he has become mostly non-verbal and is unable to engage in reading or written communication. While no official statement has confirmed new mobility issues, reports suggest that Bruce now struggles with basic motor functions. Despite the challenges, Willis remains surrounded by a devoted support system. His wife Emma Heming Willis, ex-wife Demi Moore, and their children have stood by his side, often sharing family updates and expressing gratitude for the global love and support. Frontotemporal dementia is distinct from Alzheimer's disease, primarily targeting behavior and language rather than memory in its early stages. It often affects individuals between the ages of 45 and 64. Initial symptoms may include personality changes, difficulty finding the right words, and impaired judgment. Over time, individuals may lose the ability to speak, write, or move independently. Bruce Willis' diagnosis has brought significant public attention to FTD, highlighting the emotional and physical toll it takes on patients and their families. In the face of this devastating condition, the Willis family continues to promote awareness and advocate for patience and compassion. While fans around the world mourn the loss of the vibrant, action-hero image of Bruce Willis, they continue to send strength and prayers to the actor and his loved ones. His legacy as a Hollywood legend remains untouchable. First Published: July 23, 2025, 00:12 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
