KUALA LUMPUR: Former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and actress-singer Bella Astillah were among the big names who lit up the International Multisport Coastal Fest in Desaru but it was eight-year-old Ayden Adrean who stole hearts.
Ayden, Bella's son, made his triathlon debut in the Super Sprint category on Sunday, braving a tough 300m swim, 10km bike and 2km run.
Despite losing his safety buoy early in the swim and having to return to shore, Ayden resumed the race with the organisers' approval and finished in style, clocking 47:36 for the cycling and 17:07 for the run.
"I was really tired during the cycling, but I never gave up," said Ayden, beaming with pride.
"This is the best competition I've ever tried."
He had only trained for a week under a coach's guidance but had already shown promise after completing a 400m open water swim in Langkawi recently.
Bella, visibly emotional at the finish line, said she never pressured her son into the sport.
"As long as he's interested, I'll always support him. I was so nervous when he didn't show up during the bike segment but that's just a typical mum's reaction" she said.
"With all the amazing food we have in Malaysia, it's important to balance it out with exercise. Events like this are a great start."
Syed Saddiq, 32, also returned to compete in the 113 Triathlon (2.25km swim, 90km bike, 21km run) for the second year running.
He finished in 6:14:27, calling the sport "one of the best ways to embrace a healthy lifestyle".
"I'm still new to this, but I've grown passionate about it. I'm here to support the organisers, my friends taking part, and most importantly, to better myself," said the Muar MP, who is gearing up for the Ironman World Championships in Nice in September and Ironman Malaysia in Langkawi in November.
"This sport isn't just a hobby. It needs to be part of a national health agenda. Over 50 per cent of Malaysians are overweight, one-third are obese, and more than 30 per cent have diabetes. We need to take action, and events like this are a good place to start."
Meanwhile, Singapore's Aaron Lee was crowned the fastest finisher in the 113 Triathlon, powering through sweltering heat to complete the race in four hours, 56 minutes and 15 seconds (4:56:15).
The 27-year-old software developer, who only began serious training in June, was surprised by the win.
"This was my first time racing in Desaru. I usually just do events back in Singapore. It was really tough out there, especially during the run, but I'm satisfied with the effort," he said.
Aaron trained 62 hours in June while juggling a full-time job and added: "Winning wasn't something I expected. There are definitely faster guys back home. But I really enjoyed the experience, and that's what matters most."
The International Multisport Coastal Fest, now in its 10th year, drew more than 900 participants from 25 countries across four formats — the 113 Triathlon, Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run), Sprint (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) and Super Sprint.

High profile defamation suit between ex-nat'l shuttler Robert Lin & Supermax boss set for Aug 6-8

THE Kuala Lumpur High Court has fixed Aug 6-8 this year to hear a defamation suit filed by former national men's double badminton player Robert Lin Woon Fui against Supermax Corp Bhd executive chairman Datuk Seri Stanley Thai Kim Sim and businessman Datuk Teh Chee Kien. Lin had on March 15, 2022 filed a defamation suit against Thai and Teh seeking RM10 mil in damages from each of them. Both Thai and Teh filed their defence on May 27, 2022. In addition, Thai also filed a counterclaim against Lin seeking damages. The defamation suits are expected to attract interest as they involve two high-profile personalities. Thai, 65, is the co-founder of listed Supermax Corp Bhd which is today ranked as among Malaysia's Big Four glove makers. The company which has manufacturing plants in Malaysia and the US, exports to over 165 countries. Thai also sat on the board of the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council from 2010 to 2015. Meanwhile, Lin, 42, partnered Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari to reach a career-high world No. 4 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings in 2006. The duo also helped Malaysia win the team bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games. The Malaysians were dubbed the 'Chinese men's doubles killer' as they defeated Guo Zhendong and Xie Zhongbo in the 2006 Badminton World Federation World Championships in Madrid. – July 7, 2025 Main image credit: The Edge; ahboy_badminton/Instagream

Sabahans shine at Dance World Cup

Tiara with her coach Arthur. KOTA KINABALU (July 6): Malaysia proudly celebrates a double silver medal victory at the Dance World Cup 2025 in Burgos, Spain – thanks to the remarkable performances of Tiara Izz Zayani and Ivana Iman binti Mohammad Ezral, two young dancers from Ballet By Nora, Kota Kinabalu. Ivana with her coach Nora. These talented young Malaysians earned second place in their respective solo categories, rising above thousands of international competitors and making their mark on the global stage. Tiara, known for her powerful and expressive interpretations of Malaysian traditional dance, brought the house down with her performance of 'Kreasi Zapin Galit'. Dancing through pain, she gave her all on stage: 'Tiara danced until her nails came off — but she never complained,' said her mother, Tuya, visibly emotional. 'She told me later, 'I just wanted to finish strong.' That's her strength — heart, discipline, and quiet courage.' Ivana, age 10, earned silver in the Mini Ballet Any Style Solo category. 'I felt nervous at first, but once I started dancing, I just imagined I was home. I'm so happy I could make everyone proud,' she said. Their teacher and mentor, Nora of Ballet By Nora, expressed her pride in both girls. 'This double silver is more than a medal. It's the result of years of discipline, late nights and unwavering commitment. I'm honoured to guide them. Tiara and Ivana have inspired all of us,'she said. Ivana's parents, Dr Natassia and Mohammad Ezral , added: 'We're humbled by Ivana's achievement. She danced with joy, and that joy brought her here. We're just so proud — and even more proud to share this celebration with Tiara and her family.' These two dancers stand as young ambassadors for Malaysia, showing the world the strength, artistry and cultural beauty that lives in Sabah. The Dance World Cup 2025 continues, with more Malaysian dancers taking the stage in the days ahead. Meanwhile, SK Muhibbahraya students from Tawau also put Sabah in the eyes of the world when they won third place in the same competition. The young dance duo — Muhd Syahmi Asyraf bin Sulaiman and Muhammad Ammar Asyraf bin Mohd Taufik — captivated judges and audiences with their energetic and disciplined Zapin performance titled 'Suara Siam. 'Their success is the result of dedicated coaching and mentorship by their teachers, Sarena Sanin (Senior Assistant for Student Affairs) and Basri Kambung (Senior Assistant for Co-curricular Activities). Upholding the school's motto, 'SK Muhibbahraya Unggul, Melangkah Jauh dari yang Biasa' (SK Muhibbahraya Excels, Moving Beyond the Ordinary), this team has proven that young talent from Sabah can not only compete but excel on the world stage. This achievement is a reflection of the vision of Tuan Haji Sapri bin Haji Raupu, headmaster of SK Muhibbahraya, Tawau, who has long aspired to see his students succeed internationally. Their accomplishment not only brings honour to the school and local community but also serves as an inspiration for students across the country to pursue their dreams with dedication and determination.
