Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka HC orders interim release of RCB marketing head, three others
Eleven persons were killed and more than 50 were injured on June 4 in the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where fans had gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League.
On June 5, the court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued notice to the Congress government in the state. It also sought a status report from the Karnataka government.
A day later, the Karnataka Police arrested Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar S and Shamant NP Mavinakere in connection with the stampede.
On Thursday, Justice SR Krishna Kumar ordered the interim release of the four men, and directed them to surrender their passports, Live Law reported.
During the hearing on Wednesday, Sosale's counsel argued that individuals cannot be held liable when an entity is named in the first information report, and claimed the arrests were made without proper investigation.
The petitioners also argued that their arrests were politically motivated and made allegedly on the directions of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, despite the police lacking jurisdiction over the case, The Hindu reported.
In response, Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty, representing the state of Karnataka argued that Royal Challengers Bengaluru held the victory parade without official permission and misled the public through social media posts.
'They have over 28 lakh followers milords,' Shetty was quoted as saying by the legal news outlet. 'They have invited the whole world but no permission is given.'

Hyderabad: Distress calls from youngsters hooked to online betting are choking suicide prevention helplines in Hyderabad. Counsellors report an over 60% spike in numbers in the last six months – compared to previous years – the majority of them being recorded during the IPL season, stretching from March to May 2025. In the last one year, local police registered about 80 cases involving online betting and gambling apart from 20 suicides. According to city-based suicide prevention service, Roshini Foundation, the jump in caller count this year is about 65% when compared to 2023. "Also, in 2023, 22% of all distress calls were related to online betting. In the first quarter of 2025, this figure stood at 36.5% with cricketing events like the Indian Premier League (IPL) triggering spikes," said Swarna Raju, director of Roshini. "Of all calls that we received last quarter, about 20% were from those in financial distress — nearly 60% of them stemmed from online betting losses," he added. Even at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Erragadda, there has been enrolment of patients — young men around 25 to 30 years old — addicted to online betting and gambling. "This trend has grown due to the easy availability of more mobile apps," Dr Vivaswan Boorla, senior psychiatrist, IMH, said. He added: "After a few initial wins, youngsters start chasing big rewards. This is fuelled by celebrities and social media influencers who promote such betting apps. While clinically we consider it as an addictive illness, for patients, it is just another way of earning money. They do not consider it wrong," he added. Counsellors say that addicts reach out to helplines when they lose big money and are "overwhelmed with shame and isolation". "They feel that they have reached a point of no return and fear facing their families. That's why they contemplate suicide," explained Reddy. Karnataka High Court to government: Pay para swimmer pending reward, Rs 2L litigation costs
Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court Monday directed the department of youth services and sports to pay para swimming champion KS Vishwas more than Rs 1.2 lakh as a pending cash award and Rs 2 lakh in litigation costs. In a sharp rebuke to the department's almost a decade-long delay, the court ruled that officials must personally bear the litigation costs. Vishwas, 36, had approached the court after multiple attempts to secure his entitled reward under a 2013 govt order had gone unanswered. Though he had applied in 2018 for Rs 6 lakh, the department stalled his claim, citing technicalities related to his association's disqualification. "The focus must not be on bureaucratic technicalities, but on the living human spirit that triumphed against colossal odds. The govt's duty is not merely administrative; it has to be moral, constitutional, and humane. When a man without arms dives into pools and emerges not just victorious but triumphant on the international stage, the state is expected to salute that spirit, not stifle his rights by red-tapism," the court observed.

Supreme Court says it feels 'ashamed' over rising crimes against women
The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday said it feels "ashamed" seeing so many cases of violence against women, reported LiveLaw. The oral observation was made by Justices Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi while hearing a writ petition filed by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association, calling for stronger implementation of laws meant to protect women from sexual offences, the report added. While addressing Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati during the hearing, Justice Kant said, Justice Kant said: "Just examine possible solutions-which are comprehensive directions which can be effectively issued to make sure the impact we want to leave should be many voiceless people in remote areas, see what we can could for them. It also urged the Court to apply the parens patriae doctrine to protect the fundamental rights of women, children, and the third gender, particularly their right to safety and a secure environment. It claimed that offenders in such cases have no fear because of the corruption, apathy, and lack of commitment among police and administrative bodies, because of which the laws are not implemented effectively. The Court has posted the matter for further hearing on July 29.
