Post Malone joins reunited Nirvana at Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert
Nirvana surprised fans by reuniting with Post Malone as singer as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
It marked the first time the grunge pioneers - drummer Dave Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear and bassist Krist Novoselic - have played a major televised performance with a male singer since the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994.
Earlier this month, they played the charity FireAid concert in Los Angeles with a rotating cast of female singers. St Vincent sang 'Breed', Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon performed 'School', Joan Jett led 'Territorial Pissings' while Grohl's own daughter, Violet, fronted 'All Apologies'.
This time, 29-year-old rapper Malone lent his vocals to the band's classic 1991 single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.'
While Grohl has expressed his preference for female singers fronting any reunion, the band have played with male singers before. They were joined by Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Deer Tick's John J. McCauley at a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame after-party in 2014. McCauley joined them again at the Cal Jam festival in 2018.
In 2012, they released a song, 'Cut Me Some Slack', with former Beatle Paul McCartney on lead vocals.
Post Malone is a longtime Nirvana fan. During the pandemic lockdown in 2020, he performed a Nirvana tribute set via livestream to raise funds for coronavirus relief efforts.
He recently announced that he will release that 14-song set on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 12.
At the Saturday Night Live concert, Adam Sandler recalled Nirvana's first appearance on the sketch comedy show while he was a cast member in 1992, calling it 'an explosive moment for all of us.' He then introduced the reunited group as: 'Post Nirvana.'
The performance was well received on social media, with one X user saying: 'Post Malone just stole the show at #SNL50 with that Nirvana cover. Holy s***'
Another added: 'He's mastered every genre of music but Post Malone was born to play Nirvana songs.'
While a third wrote: 'Post Malone fronting Nirvana wasn't something I realized how badly I needed to see.'
The concert, which was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, also saw appearances from Jack White, Miley Cyrus and Robyn.
Arcade Fire were joined by David Byrne and St Vincent for a cover of David Bowie's 'Heroes', Devo played with former Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen on drums, while Lady Gaga sang 'Dick in the Box.'

However, his lawyer, well-known divorce attorney Laura Wasser has told the court that the little girl has ties to Utah, including her nanny, pediatrician, music classes, physical education, and swimming. The singer is due to embark on a UK and Europe Tour, called the BIG ASS World Tour.

SNL Biden impersonator Dana Carvey knew former president was 'compromised mentally'
Comedian Dana Carvey, who played former President Biden during the last season of "Saturday Night Live," said last week that he knew the former president was "compromised mentally" while doing his portrayal. "I knew that he was compromised mentally. I mean, it was obvious to me, but it was a delicate thing in the comedy world. There were a lot of people [who] did not want to do anything that would kind of ding him in like an awkward way," Carvey said during his "Fly on the Wall" podcast last week. Carvey played Biden on SNL throughout the 2024-2025 season, often mocking the president and his administration, and receiving plaudits for his portrayal of the president as confused and forgetful. "If I can do Biden, if I can make Biden funny to everybody, then, then I am where I want to be. And then to make it funny, it had to be recognizable. And so there's certain things I did not include in my package," Carvey told co-host David Spade and guest Julie Bowen, in a clip flagged by Mediaite. He repeated a phrase he used while playing Biden and said, "I'm not kidding around here, I'm being serious." "I think it's easier to make fun of him if he's the president. If it's just a 90-whatever-year-old man, just go look at this a------. So once he's president then he's more fair game to say, but no one made fun of him forever," Spade added. Bowen, known for her role on ABC's "Modern Family," applauded Carvey's Biden impressions as he discussed how he went about portraying the former president. "And then the defiant, 50s guy. 'There's no crisis at the border,' yeah, but you said, 'Yeah, you got to get your facts right, Jack, I'll beat the hell out of you, you want to do some push-ups, you dog-faced pony soldier," Carvey joked, repeating several famous phrases the former president used. Carvey said playing Biden was his favorite because he "had like 10 hooks." The comedian and impressionist also played George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot on "Saturday Night Live," among numerous other roles. Carvey said during the podcast that one of Biden's staffers came to one of the shows and said he loved the impressions. The staffer said Carvey should come have lunch at the White House, but the comedian said it never happened.
