Post Malone joins reunited Nirvana at Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert

Nirvana surprised fans by reuniting with Post Malone as singer as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall. It marked the first time the grunge pioneers - drummer Dave Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear and bassist Krist Novoselic - have played a major televised performance with a male singer since the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994. Earlier this month, they played the charity FireAid concert in Los Angeles with a rotating cast of female singers. St Vincent sang 'Breed', Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon performed 'School', Joan Jett led 'Territorial Pissings' while Grohl's own daughter, Violet, fronted 'All Apologies'. This time, 29-year-old rapper Malone lent his vocals to the band's classic 1991 single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' While Grohl has expressed his preference for female singers fronting any reunion, the band have played with male singers before. They were joined by Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Deer Tick's John J. McCauley at a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame after-party in 2014. McCauley joined them again at the Cal Jam festival in 2018. In 2012, they released a song, 'Cut Me Some Slack', with former Beatle Paul McCartney on lead vocals. Post Malone is a longtime Nirvana fan. During the pandemic lockdown in 2020, he performed a Nirvana tribute set via livestream to raise funds for coronavirus relief efforts. He recently announced that he will release that 14-song set on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 12. At the Saturday Night Live concert, Adam Sandler recalled Nirvana's first appearance on the sketch comedy show while he was a cast member in 1992, calling it 'an explosive moment for all of us.' He then introduced the reunited group as: 'Post Nirvana.' The performance was well received on social media, with one X user saying: 'Post Malone just stole the show at #SNL50 with that Nirvana cover. Holy s***' Another added: 'He's mastered every genre of music but Post Malone was born to play Nirvana songs.' While a third wrote: 'Post Malone fronting Nirvana wasn't something I realized how badly I needed to see.' The concert, which was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, also saw appearances from Jack White, Miley Cyrus and Robyn. Arcade Fire were joined by David Byrne and St Vincent for a cover of David Bowie's 'Heroes', Devo played with former Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen on drums, while Lady Gaga sang 'Dick in the Box.'

Nirvana performs surprise reunion set with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and St. Vincent

Nirvana performs surprise reunion set with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and St. Vincent Show Caption Hide Caption Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell and other celebs unite for LA fire victims Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Gwen Stefani and a swath of other celebrities united at the FireAid concerts to raise funds for LA fire victims. No one could have expected a surprise Nirvana reunion with a rotating cast of female singers standing in for the late Kurt Cobain, but that's what fans received Thursday night with Dave Grohl behind the drums, Pat Smear on guitar and Krist Novoselic on bass. There also was a family reunion with Grohl's 18-year-old daughter, Violet, who has frequently sung with her father onstage, joining the gathering of alt-rock royalty for Nirvana's almost-ballad, 'All Apologies.' The surprise one-night-only performance was one of more than a dozen sets at Inglewood's Kia Forum during the dual FireAid benefit concerts, which raised money for recovery efforts following historic wildfires that devastated areas in and around LA County and killed at least two dozen people. The band slammed through a quartet of Nirvana songs with sometimes questionable audio, especially with St. Vincent's frantic 'Breed.' But the volume and energy never relented as Kim Gordon stormed through 'School' and Joan Jett growled during 'Territorial Pissings.' Nirvana's last performance with Cobain – who died April 5, 1994, at 27 – was a month prior in Germany. The band's last performance, which featured Gordon, Jett and Lorde, was when was Seattle grunge group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. The set was part of a star-studded lineup – which also included Joni Mitchell, The Black Crowes, Stevie Nicks and the Red Hot Chili Peppers – at the Forum. Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Rod Stewart and Katy Perry were among the acts that took the stage at the nearby Intuit Dome. Every FireAid performance: Which songs Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, No Doubt and more performed The Nirvana reunion was not initially included in FireAid's lineup. This was the first time that Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman, and daughter Violet have performed together since he announced the birth of a daughter outside of his 21-year marriage last fall. Grohl has been married to Jordyn Blum since August 2003, and the two largely keep their relationship private. They have three daughters together. Per organizers, funds raised "will be distributed under the advisement of the Annenberg Foundation" and "will be distributed for short-term relief efforts and long-term initiatives to prevent future fire disasters throughout Southern California." The dual benefit concerts took place just three days before the 67th annual Grammy Awards, which will take over Arena in downtown LA on Sunday. Numerous events associated with Sunday's ceremonies were canceled following Southern California's wildfires. The celebrations that have vowed to go forward, including a MusiCares concert honoring The Grateful Dead and the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala, will have a philanthropic focus aimed at first responders. Dave Grohl Puts on United Family Front After Cheating, Baby Revelation

Originally appeared on E! Online Dave Grohl's family united to the tune of love. The Foo Fighters frontman took the stage with his and wife Jordyn Blum's 18-year-old daughter Violet at the FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles Jan. 30. In his first performance since he revealed he fathered a baby outside of his marriage, the 55-year-old was also joined by his former Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear for the first time since 2020 as they surprised the audience by performing some of the band's beloved songs, including "Breed," "School," and 'Territorial Pissings," during the Los Angeles wildfire relief fund raiser. While Dave returned to his Nirvana roots by taking his place behind the drum kit, Violet surprised the audience as she appeared on stage and performed the band's final song of the evening, 'All Apologies.' In clips shared across social media from the moment, Dave could be seen smiling while rocking out on the drums behind his daughter. More from E! Violet is no stranger to taking the stage with her dad. In 2023, Violet joined the Foo Fighters to perform at the Glastonbury Music Festival. While Dave made a rare appearance on his birthday Jan. 14, as he worked with the Feed The Streets Los Angeles to provide meals for displaced residents, and first responders of the wildfires, the 'Everclear' singer has kept out of the spotlight in recent months in the wake of his cheating scandal. In September, Dave—who also shares daughters Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10—with Jordyn—revealed his infidelity and made public apology to his wife of 21 years and their children. 'I've recently become a father to a baby born outside of my marriage,' he wrote on Instagram Sept. 10. 'I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her.' "I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness,' he wrote. 'We're grateful for your consideration toward all children involved as we move forward together."
