Sarawak govt's RM1m contribution completes funding for St Peter's Church in Padungan

Malay Mail3 days ago
KUCHING, June 28 — The Sarawak government has contributed an additional RM1 million to the building fund of St Peter's Church, Padungan, marking the final financial boost needed to complete the RM38 million construction of the new church.
The cheque was handed over during the church's official opening ceremony today, in a gesture of continued support for religious harmony and development in the state.
'On behalf of the Sarawak government, we will be handing over a RM1 million cheque to the church in further aid to the building fund,' said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg in a text of speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Abang Johari congratulated the Catholic community on the successful completion of the iconic house of worship.
'This is not just a place for prayer and reflection, it is a symbol of vision, resilience, and deep-rooted faith.
'Located in the very centre of Kuching, the presence of St. Peter's Church, among other religious houses in close proximity, is a powerful testament to the religious harmony and unity that Sarawak is so proud to uphold,' he said.
The church's completion was made possible through a combination of donations, government funding, and community support, with much of the fundraising effort taking place amid the challenges of the pandemic.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Datuk Simon Poh said the total cost of the building was RM38 million.
'Yes, so from the overall initial planning it was RM38 million and then you know the pandemic knocked out all the donors and pledgers so we had to start from zero again,' he said.
Poh acknowledged the critical role of the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), which had earlier contributed RM2 million through two separate cheques presented in the past two years.
'And then today is the final cheque,' he said.
According to him, the RM1 million presented today brought the total contribution from the Sarawak government through Unifor to RM3 million.
'With this last RM1 million, today we received a total of RM3 million from the Sarawak government through Unifor. We have enough just to cover everything and pay everything so tomorrow we will consecrate the whole church together,' he said.
While some minor funding is still needed for furnishings and interior work, Poh said the contract sum for construction is now fully covered.
'The smaller things like furnishing and interior work still need to be done, but the building, the contract sum, everything is cleared. With the last RM1 million coming in, we can cover everything,' he added.
The Archbishop noted that support had come not just from Catholics but from many other communities and faiths in Sarawak.
'This church stands more than just the church for the Catholic because people from all walks of life are looking and saying wow this is in Kuching. It's amazing that we don't need to go to Europe to see a very nice church here,' he said.
Poh said the church had become a new landmark symbolising unity and mutual respect among Sarawakians.
'This became a landmark for a sign of our desire for harmony, contributing to society and building a better Sarawak for peace, for harmony, as a model for other parts of Malaysia and for the world,' he added.
Built entirely using local materials and expertise, the church also showcases Sarawak's growing capabilities in architecture and construction, said Poh.
'This is the beginning of something that's possible. So Anak Sarawak out there, those graduating in a few years, by 2030, they can come back. We believe Sarawak will provide employment and continue contributing to peace, harmony, and progress.'

O&G consultant loses RM2.7mil to ‘Nova 88' investment scam

The victim realised he had been duped when each attempt to withdraw his purported profits required additional payments. PETALING JAYA : An oil and gas consultant in Perak lost over RM2.7 million to a non-existent investment scheme advertised on a website. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the 37-year-old man lodged a report on June 29 at the Ipoh police headquarters, claiming he had been scammed through an online investment platform known as 'Nova 88'. He said preliminary investigations found the victim had registered an account on the website in April 2023 through a contact, now the main suspect, whom he had met via WhatsApp. The victim made an initial deposit of RM30,000 and was then given a user ID and password to monitor the supposed investment. 'Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20, 2025, the victim made 136 fund transfers to seven different accounts, totalling RM2,701,687. 'The funds came from his savings and contributions from family members,' Bernama reported Noor Hisam as saying. He said the victim realised he had been duped when each attempt to withdraw his purported profits required additional payments. To date, he has been unable to access any returns, with the suspect having offered numerous excuses before eventually becoming unreachable. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Noor Hisam advised the public to avoid any form of investment offered through unlicensed, unregistered or unregulated websites. 'Such investments carry high risks and can lead to significant financial losses. Always verify the background of any investment company with recognised authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission,' he said.

BNM says ringgit is market-determined

Bank Negara Malaysia said the country adopts a flexible exchange rate. (AP pic) PETALING JAYA : Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said the ringgit's exchange rate is market-determined and that the central bank's derivative positions are used to manage liquidity conditions. 'BNM's short forward positions reflect the central bank's activities in managing the liquidity needs of the domestic financial market for effective financial intermediation,' the central bank said in an emailed statement. 'These positions are utilised to manage liquidity conditions and not to influence exchange rates in the foreign exchange market,' BNM said. Some of emerging Asia's biggest central banks look to be dialing back interventions in the currency market and policymakers in India and Malaysia have reduced the size of some derivative positions, Bloomberg News reported on June 22. 'Malaysia adopts a flexible exchange rate,' BNM said. 'BNM's presence in the foreign exchange market, if any, is to manage excessive volatility in the exchange rate and ensure orderly market conditions,' it said.

Music industry bodies secure leave to challenge new copyright guidelines

Public Performance Malaysia Bhd and Recording Performers Malaysia Bhd are challenging the Guidelines of Copyright (Collective Management Organisations) 2025. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court has granted two collective management organisations (CMOs) representing the rights of recording performers in Malaysia leave to bring judicial review proceedings to challenge a new regulatory framework slated to come into force next year. Justice Amarjeet Singh allowed Public Performance Malaysia Bhd (PPM) and Recording Performers Malaysia Bhd (RPM) to pursue judicial review proceedings in their bid to quash the Guidelines of Copyright (Collective Management Organisations) 2025. The court also fixed Aug 7 to hear the application by PPM and RPM to stay the enforcement of the guidelines pending the disposal of the lawsuit. PPM and PRM named the controller of copyright, MyIPO, and the domestic trade and cost of living minister as respondents in their application. They claim the guidelines – scheduled to come into force on Jan 16, 2026 – were drawn up and issued by the respondents without proper consultation. They said they were only provided last year with a public consultation paper that outlined general proposals, without the specific details necessary for meaningful feedback. Both bodies claimed they only came to know the full contents of the guidelines when it was published earlier this year. They said the guidelines contained 'sweeping provisions' relating to the internal structure, constitution and governance of a CMO, its agreement with constituent members, and the terms of the licensing scheme to be implemented. They also said the copyright controller, tasked with regulating copyright matters, did not accord them a fair opportunity to be heard and reply. They further alleged that the guidelines contained provisions that exceed the powers vested by law in the controller. The court also fixed July 10 to hear a separate bid by Music Authors Copyright Protection Bhd (MACP) for leave to commence a judicial review over the same guidelines. PPM, RPM and MACP had said that they disagreed with the guidelines as it could negatively impact copyright holders.
