Alonso gets a reality check as Real Madrid slump to big defeat against PSG

Xabi Alonso is looking forward to "starting from scratch" with Real Madrid next season after being thrown in at the deep end as coach of the Spanish giants in the Club World Cup. Alonso was given a reality check on Wednesday as Madrid were eliminated 4-0 by European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final at the MetLife Stadium. "PSG are a team who have been built over time, whereas we are practically just beginning," Alonso said after seeing Real Madrid go two goals behind inside nine minutes. It was 3-0 before half-time and PSG added a late fourth as they advanced to Sunday's final against Chelsea. "We have lots of room for improvement. There are many things that we want to do better," Alonso added. "We have to be self-critical. This will tell us things for the future that will help us to compete at a much better level than we did today." Alonso was appointed at the end of May, taking over from Carlo Ancelotti after a successful two-and-a-half years at Bayer Leverkusen. Real finished as runners-up to Barcelona in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, and went out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Arsenal. The Basque technician, a former Madrid player, would have preferred a full pre-season with his squad before being thrust into competitive action, and it was always going to be a big ask for them to beat PSG's well-oiled machine. "They are at a very high level and have been since the start of the knockout phase of the Champions League," Alonso said. "They have shown it again here and we have to accept it -- we are just beginning, learning things about where we want to go and how we are going to get there." Real eased into the knockout phase of the Club World Cup despite being held by Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in their opening game. They then recorded narrow wins over Juventus and Borussia Dortmund prior to Wednesday's defeat. Modric bows out Alonso demonstrated his tactical flexibility during the tournament by changing between a back-four and a three-man central defence. Kylian Mbappe was used sparingly and sat out the group stage after being hospitalised with a stomach bug, but there were positives elsewhere. New signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen got their first taste of action for the club, and young striker Gonzalo Garcia made a big impression with four goals in the first five matches. Luka Modric, 39, made his farewell appearance against PSG, bringing down the curtain on a glorious 13-year spell at the club. He is now set to join AC Milan. "This game is the last match of this season, not the start of the next one," Alonso insisted. "We will take positives away from this. We come away from here a better team and I am convinced this will help us start next season better." Like all the European teams who have gone deep into the Club World Cup, the turnaround into next season will be a quick one. Alonso's La Liga debut as Real coach is scheduled to be on Tuesday, August 19, at home to Osasuna. Attempts to have the fixture postponed have so far been unsuccessful, meaning there are less than six weeks for the players to have a break and then embark on a full pre-season with their new coach. Argentine starlet Franco Mastantuono, a 17-year-old attacking midfielder, will arrive from River Plate in time for the new campaign after a transfer fee of around 63 million euros ($74m) was agreed last month. "In August the 2025/26 season begins," said Alonso. "Things are going to be different. We are starting from scratch."

PSG crush Real Madrid 4-0 to reach Club World Cup final

Paris St Germain's Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz scored twice in a devastating first-half display as the French champions demolished Real Madrid 4-0 on Wednesday to book their place in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea. Two defensive errors handed PSG their opening goals within nine minutes at MetLife Stadium. Raul Asencio's poor control in the sixth minute gifted Ousmane Dembele possession and his first effort was saved by Thibaut Courtois before the rebound was picked up by Ruiz who scored into an empty net. Antonio Ruediger's miskick as he attempted to pass three minutes later allowed Dembele to burst unmarked into the box before firing a tidy finish past Courtois. Ruiz struck again in the 24th minute after Achraf Hakimi made a great run down the right and the Spaniard held off defender Raul Asencio with a feint before finishing perfectly from close range. Substitute Goncalo Ramos completed the rout for European champions PSG three minutes from time, punishing a feeble Real Madrid side who failed to pose any attacking threat. "It was an incredible match, brilliant win," player of the match Ruiz told DAZN. "Even under scorching heat, such difficult conditions to play in midday, the team responded really well and it's an achievement to be proud of. "We made a perfect game and beat a top-level rival like Real Madrid in a great way. It's job well done." Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso's tactical gamble backfired spectacularly. Missing suspended defender Dean Huijsen and injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alonso abandoned the five-man defence that had served them well in previous rounds, reverting to a four-man backline that proved woefully inadequate against PSG's attacking prowess. PSG, who thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final last month, smelled blood from the opening whistle and never relented against opponents who looked clueless on how to approach Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal even with French forward Kylian Mbappe back in the starting side after illness. Dembele almost scored in the fourth minute with a curling strike from inside the box that Courtois stopped with a brilliant one-handed save before the keeper produced another stunning reflex block from a close-range strike by Ruiz. But there was nothing he could do to deny PSG from opening a three-goal lead and the French team had more chances to extend their advantage further before the break. Real made no changes at halftime and PSG stayed in control, with Desire Doue having a goal ruled out for an offside. The Spanish side never came close to causing Donnarumma a serious problem and Ramos added a fourth goal for PSG. "At the beginning, the setback was strong enough with a 2-0 down. We knew that the task was really tough," Real coach Alonso told DAZN. "At the moment, the feeling is not the best, but we'll have to try to learn from today. They are a team that has been built in two years and we are just starting here, so it will take time. "Right now what we need is a proper break. This is not the beginning of next year, this is just the end of this season. After just three weeks here, I think that we can take positives from this period, not from today. We take lessons from today."

Luis Enrique eyes more history for PSG after reaching Club World Cup final

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique savoured his team's performance in blowing away Real Madrid on Wednesday to reach the Club World Cup final and urged them to go on and cap a historic season by claiming yet another trophy. Two goals from Fabian Ruiz either side of an Ousmane Dembele strike, as well as a late effort from substitute Goncalo Ramos, gave PSG an emphatic 4-0 semifinal victory at MetLife Stadium against a Madrid team who have just started working under new coach Xabi Alonso. "It is a beautiful victory and we are happy to be in the final," said Luis Enrique. PSG came into the Club World Cup at the end of a campaign in which they won Ligue 1 and the French Cup before thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final to win the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. Victory against Chelsea in Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey would mean PSG winning every competition in which they have taken part this season. "That is the objective we have had since the beginning but it is always very difficult to achieve these things -- very few teams can do what we are trying to do," said the 55-year-old. "We are one game away from making history for Paris and for a French club by winning every competition we have taken part in. That means a lot for us and for our fans." PSG have been outstanding in 2025 and are such a well-oiled machine under Luis Enrique that they appear unstoppable, while Alonso only took over from Carlo Ancelotti as Real coach prior to the tournament in the United States. "It is a new set-up for them. He has only just come in while we have been working together for two years, so this is normal," said Luis Enrique, appointed as PSG coach in July 2023, of his compatriot. "He needs time to get a pre-season in to work with his team. He can't be judged. The two situations cannot be compared." Meanwhile the Spaniard said Dembele had again shown he was a serious candidate to win the Ballon d'Or after the France forward played a starring role in PSG's victory. Dembele was starting for the first time at the Club World Cup having come into the tournament with an injury suffered playing for France last month. His goal to make it 2-0 was his 35th for PSG in 52 games in all competitions since last August. "For me, when it comes to the Ballon d'Or, I must say that the players who can win it have to not just score goals and set up goals but help their team to win trophies.
