Jay Johnson says Kade Anderson should be No. 1 overall pick in MLB draft to Nationals

Yahoo22-06-2025
If Game 1 of the College World Series championship series marked the last time Kade Anderson starts for LSU baseball, the 6-foot-2 left-hander sure put on quite the memorable outing as he went the distance to deliver the Tigers a 1-0 shutout win over Coastal Carolina.
It was also a performance that shored up one thing for his coach, Jay Johnson: Kade Anderson should be the No. 1 overall pick to the Washington Nationals in the 2025 MLB Draft.

"His next pitch should be somewhere in the Washington Nationals organization. It's not close," Johnson said after LSU's win over Coastal Carolina. "... He's the best player in the country. There's nobody closer to the Major Leagues than that right now."

Anderson's efforts at Charles Schwab Field Omaha not only solidified his LSU legacy but also put him in the College World Series record book with a select handful of pitchers. The native of Madisonville, Louisiana became just the third pitcher to throw a complete game shutout in a CWS finals game since the championship series was added to the tournament format in 2003.

It was also the second complete game of his career, and the season. His 10 strikeouts increased his nation-leading strikeout number to 180 punchouts in 119 innings of work this year. Of the 130 pitches he threw against Coastal Carolina on the night, 82 of them were for strikes.
Johnson's pleas for Anderson to be the No. 1 overall pick in next month's MLB draft weren't the only flowers that he gave his junior ace. The 48-year-old Johnson put Anderson's heroic season and skillset up there with former LSU pitcher Paul Skenes, who went No. 1 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023 and has been a phenom since making his debut in May 2024.
"He's the best pitcher in college baseball. We had the best pitcher (Paul Skenes) on the planet two years ago in a similar situation. I feel like Kade has a very similar season to that," Johnson said. "And that's how you get here (to CWS). I'm really proud of him.
"I think the commonality between the two is the person, the character, the toughness and the team-first attitude."

Anderson is currently projected to go within the top five of the MLB draft by several MLB draft analysts. USA TODAY's Gabe Lacques has Anderson going No. 5 overall to the St. Louis Cardinals in his June 10 mock draft, while ESPN's Kiley McDaniels moved Anderson up to his No. 1 overall pick in his mock draft that came out on June 18.
LSU will now look to close the College World Series championship series with a win on June 22 at 2:30 p.m. ET against Coastal Carolina at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

Clemson's T.J. Parker Fires Back at LSU HC Brian Kelly's 'Death Valley Jr.' Remark

LSU head coach Brian Kelly made headlines last month when he referred to Clemson's Memorial Stadium as "Death Valley Junior," and Clemson defensive end T.J. Parker fired back at Kelly on Thursday. "They can have their opinion," Parker said, according to On3. "We're gonna handle all that on August 30. At the end of the day, we can do all the talking. We still got to play. So, we gonna see. You know what I'm saying? They're hyping up everybody across the board, all these transfers they got — we'll see." LSU travels to South Carolina to take on Clemson in a highly anticipated season opener for both programs on Aug. 30. LSU hasn't won a season opener under Kelly and has lost five consecutive Week 1 games dating back to 2020. Despite only having met four times previously, the rivalry between these two programs has continued to grow over the years, with both schools referring to their stadium as Death Valley. The two programs last met in 2019, when LSU crushed Clemson by double digits to win the national championship. Earlier this month, Kelly, the winningest active NCAA coach, said LSU is "letting Clemson borrow the name." "There's always fuel for the fire," Swinney said, per 247Sports. Clemson's Memorial Stadium was first referred to as Death Valley in 1948, while LSU's Tiger Stadium was first called Death Valley more than a decade later in 1959, when LSU defeated Clemson in the Sugar Bowl that same year. Clemson is returning 16 starters from last season, including All-ACC quarterback Cade Klubnik, while LSU is also returning its star QB, Garrett Nussmeier, and reeled in the No. 2 class in On3's 2025 Team Transfer Portal Rankings. Sherrone Moore bets on Bryce Underwood, Chip Lindsey to lift Michigan offense in 2025

Many pundits expect Michigan football to start the season in the top 25 in college, yet it doesn't appear many believe it will stay that way. With an over-under set between 8.5 and 9.5, many are taking the under, citing key defensive losses and a moribund offense given what it was last year. However, that doesn't take into account the numerous changes that the Wolverines have made. Starting in November, Sherrone Moore flipped Bryce Underwood from LSU to Ann Arbor, the No. 1 quarterback and recruit in the country staying home, with an opportunity to lead the team in year one. A few days after beating Ohio State, he fired offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell in favor of Chip Lindsey, who had successful stints at Auburn, UCF, and North Carolina. So, the offense, even with a freshman quarterback, will look much different. Starting with Underwood, Moore shared at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas that he's appreciated his work ethic, his smarts, and how he's jelled with the team. Given his maturity even at such a young age, there's a lot to like about the former five-star. "I think he's grown every single day since he's been on campus," Moore said. "He's been with us since December, continues to do everything he can to be, one, the best teammate he could be, two, to be the best student he could be, and then three, to be the best football player that he could be, a quarterback that he could be for our football team. "And he does everything the right way. He makes sure that he attacks everything the best way. I literally just got off the phone with him, calling and asking me what time he's got to be at the team meeting on Tuesday. So he wants to make sure he's on time and do everything right. So he's a great teammate, great kid, great young man. Jay and Beverly, his parents, have done an outstanding job raising him -- but I can say that for all our student-athletes at Michigan." But Moore also brought in Fresno State quarterback Mikey Keene to compete with Underwood for the starting job. It hasn't gone as expected, with Keene being out for all of spring ball with an injury. Healthy now, he's expected to work into the rotation in fall camp starting next week. With him and Lindsey, it's helping the Wolverine offense to propel out of the 2024 doldrums -- a year where it was last in college football in terms of yards per attempt. What's more, with Lindsey (who was once the head coach at Troy) taking over the offense, Moore feels much more confident about that side of the ball. "Yeah, I mean, overall the room is awesome. I love those guys in the room as young men," Moore said. "First of all, we talked about Mikey, who, did a study about snaps in college football. He leads the team with 2,029 snaps in college football. That's a lot of snaps in the game. So he's a guy that's done it, that's experienced it at a high level. "And, you know, bringing in Chip has been awesome. He's an outstanding human being, a phenomenal coach, a great leader of young men. And the guys want to play for him. But from a knowledge standpoint, the things that he's gonna give our offense and already has given our offense, it's been outstanding. And, the things he's given me, he's a former head coach. He's done it, he's been through it, he's seen it. So to be in that position and to be able to lean on somebody that's been in my position before in college football has been huge for me." Fans will get an opportunity to see the new-look Michigan football team on August 30 when the Wolverines host New Mexico for the season opener.

Who are the 10 Coaches With the Most to Prove Entering the 2025 CFB Season?

College football has had an eventful offseason that saw dozens of high-profile transfers, some big-name coaches coming and going, as well as a bunch of trash talk between programs. All of that has set us up for a wild 2025-26 season with a whole lot of unpredictability to come. The College Football Playoff will undoubtedly add to that and deliver magic at the end of the season, but what happens to the teams that fall short of expectations? Going into the 2025-26 season, a number of high-profile coaches are facing pressure to win this year or are potentially looking for work next offseason. These are the 10 with the most to prove entering the 2025 College Football season. 10 Coaches With the Most to Prove Entering the 2025 CFB Season? 10. Kalen DeBoer - Alabama DeBoer took the Alabama job following maybe the greatest coach of all time in Nick Saban, which led to some massive expectations. After losing three games combined in his final two seasons at Washington, DeBoer lost four in his first year with the Tide, while also missing the CFP. That won't fly for two years in a row. He is going to need a big second year to prove he can hack it in the SEC and make it through his full contract. 9. Brian Kelly - LSU Kelly has been at LSU for three years and has yet to post a campaign with fewer than three losses. That hasn't been good enough to earn a CFP bid to this point. Once he was hired, there was concern he wouldn't be able to compete at the highest level of the SEC. Going into his fourth season, Kelly has a lot to prove if he truly wants to be at that highest level. 8. Billy Napier - Florida After a great run with Louisiana, Napier took his talents to Gainesville in 2022. Fast-forward to 2025, and he has had two under .500 seasons leading into last season's 8-5 campaign. That won't cut it long-term. If Napier is going to stick around with the Gators, he is going to need a much more successful year in the highly competitive SEC. 7. Mike Norvell - Florida State Hard to believe, but Norvell is entering his sixth season with the Seminoles. Unfortunately, though, his last season was by far his worst. After going a combined 23-4 over the previous two seasons, Florida State finished last season at just 2-10. A lot of that can be traced to injuries and some poor roster fits, but either way, Norvell has a lot to prove in 2025. 6. Hugh Freeze - Auburn The start of the Hugh Freeze era at Auburn has not been a stellar one. With back-to-back seasons under .500, Freeze is going to feel some real pressure in 2025, despite being in the extremely competitive SEC. If he is going to prove he can stick in the new-era SEC, he is going to need a much better season this year. 5. Mario Cristobal - Miami (FL) After two lackluster seasons with the Hurricanes, Cristobal and Miami turned it around to the tune of a 10-3 season. That comes after he combined for 13 losses in those first two seasons. The question is if Cristobal and Miami can repeat last season's 10-win performance in an ACC that is likely to be a little better than last season's. 4. Luke Fickell - Wisconsin Fickell's first two seasons at the head of the Badgers have been anything but noteworthy. His current record at Wisconsin sits at 13-13, a steep drop-off from Paul Chryst leading the team to three straight 10-win seasons from 2015-2017. The job won't get any easier in 2025 with a loaded Big Ten set to challenge them at every turn. 3. Matt Rhule - Nebraska Two seasons into his time at Nebraska, Rhule is 12-13 overall. The good news is, last season was a two-win improvement, and the recruiting and transfer portal have both been very kind to the Cornhuskers. If he can help lead the team to another small step forward, Rhule will once again prove he is a master at rebuilding, but with the Big Ten stacked, there is a lot for him to prove. 2. Lincoln Riley - USC After going a combined 21-5 in 2021 and 2022, Riley has struggled in 2023 and 2024, sporting a 15-11 record overall. Those two seasons do include two bowl wins, something that most schools would love to be able to say, but at USC, that is not what they are after. The CFP is where USC wants to be. In 2025, the Trojans are expecting another CFP berth, something Riley will need to prove he can deliver in a fierce Big Ten. 1. Brett Venables - Oklahoma It is now or never for Venables, who has one 10-win season sandwiched between two 6–7 campaigns at Oklahoma. This is his first head coaching stop, and over three seasons it has been anything but a home run. Oklahoma is in a crunch now, with its move to the SEC, there are a lot of schools competing for CFP spots, including the Sooners. Venables will need to prove he can coach at the highest level in college football if he is going to stick, a tall task for the former Clemson DC. Honorable mentions: Bill Belichick - UNC Jonathan Smith - Michigan State Josh Heupel - Tennessee James Franklin - Penn State Trent Dilfer - UAB Check out all of our Daily Rankers .
