Newcastle footballer Sean Longstaff plays cricket for Tynemouth CC, bowls express pace

Indian Express7 hours ago
Newcastle baller Sean Longstaff takes the maxim of cricket in summer, football in winter serious, and continued his tradition of spending holidays from the pitch for the striped Magpies and diverting it to bowling for his local cricket club, Tynemouth CC.
In a game against Felling CC, Longstaff bowled a pacy delivery and claimed a LBW wicket. With Shubman Gill shading the likes of Carse & Tongue with a double ton and England generally in very poor shape, fans at Tynemouth urged the footballer, quipping he try out for Lord's. 'Wheels' they called his runup.
Fans on Twitter informed that Longstaff has long spent his summers playing cricket for the Club before his tearaway pace was highlighted on social media when he bowled at Felling in the North East Premier League.

The Newcastle midfielder, 27, is an academy product and is seeking clarity on his future with nufcblog.co.uk reporting that three clubs Everton, Leeds Utd and overseas are interested in his services. Longstaff hasn't started a football game since December, and was passed over for Lewis Miley.
In May, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Newcastle, 'I don't have to motivate him. He should motivate himself – he is here representing the club he loves. He has to be ready to take his chance when it comes. Any train of thought that I have to – I can't do that for all 25 players.
But Sean is motivated. He has been brilliant behind the scenes, he is training well and he's got undoubted qualities. He also has a contract for next year. The control is very much in his hands as to what he wants to do for his long-term future. And we are certainly delighted to have him.' Meanwhile he has continued immersing in cricket.
Ian Botham played football for Scunthorpe and cricket, a tad more famously amongst many others. Like footballers who hunker down for some light weight cricket, rugby players take to cricket in France too. The Bordeaux Giscours cricket club tends to have plenty of South African rugby players, turning out for their summer side playing at Labarde and have often won the Aquitaine Division. French cricket teams are typically based around vineyards.

Wiaan Mulder does a Shubman Gill in Zimbabwe; South African captain becomes third to hit 200 on Test captaincy debut

Wiaan Mulder emulated Indian captain Shubman Gill to score a hundred on his first Test match as captain on Sunday. Leading South Africa in the absence of injured Keshav Maharaj, Mulder brought up his hundred against Zimbabwe on the first day of the second Test at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Mulder's Gill connection came after the Indian skipper scored 147 in his first Test as a captain in Leeds during the first Test against England earlier in the month. Mulder also became the 33rd captain to score a hundred in a debut Test match as a skipper. That's not all. Mulder went on to convert his hundred into a double century to become the third batter in the world to score a double ton in their first innings as a Test captain. Only Graham Dowling of New Zealand and West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul had achieved the same before Mulder. With this double ton, Mulder also became the fourth South African to hit a double century on the first day a Test match. Gary Kirsten (2001), Graeme Smith (2002, 2008) and Herschelle Gibbs (2003) had achieved the same before Mulder.

Wiaan Mulder Becomes 3rd South African To Century In 1st Test As Captain

Star all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, in his first Test as South African captain, has scored a century in the first innings. The 27-year-old cricketer from Gauteng came out to bat at No. 3 in his first Test as South Africa captain, and he crossed the 100-run mark by taking a single on the fifth ball of the 43rd over of South Africa's first innings bowled by Blessing Muzarabani. Mulder needed 116 runs to complete his century on Sunday (July 6). He is the third South African captain to score a century in his first Test as captain. Herbie Taylor was the first South African to score a century in his first Test as captain. During the South Africa-England Test played in Durban in December 1913, he scored 109 runs in the first innings.
