
Physicists still divided about quantum world, 100 years on
PARIS: The theory of
quantum mechanics
has transformed daily life since being proposed a century ago, yet how it works remains a mystery and physicists are deeply divided about what is actually going on, a survey in the journal Nature said Wednesday.
"Shut up and calculate!" is a famous quote in
quantum physics
that illustrates the frustration of scientists struggling to unravel one of the world's great paradoxes.
For the last century, equations based on quantum mechanics have consistently and accurately described the behaviour of extremely small objects.
However, no one knows what is happening in the physical reality behind the mathematics.
The problem started at the turn of the 20th century, when scientists realised that the classical principles of physics did not apply to things on the level on atoms.
Bafflingly, photons and electrons appear to behave like both particles and waves. They can also be in different positions simultaneously -- and have different speeds or levels of energy.
In 1925, Austrian physicist Erwin Schroedinger and Germany's Werner
Heisenberg
developed a set of complex mathematical tools that describe quantum mechanics using probabilities.
This "wave function" made it possible to predict the results of measurements of a particle.
These equations led to the development of a huge amount of modern technology, including lasers, LED lights, MRI scanners and the transistors used in computers and phones.
But the question remained: what exactly is happening in the world beyond the maths?
A confusing cat
To mark the 100th year of quantum mechanics, many of the world's leading physicists gathered last month on the German island of Heligoland, where Heisenberg wrote his famous equation.
More than 1,100 of them responded to a survey conducted by the leading scientific journal Nature.
The results showed there is a "striking lack of consensus among physicists about what quantum theory says about reality", Nature said in a statement.
More than a third, 36 per cent, of the respondents favoured the most widely accepted theory, known as the
Copenhagen interpretation
.
In the classical world, everything has defined properties, such as position or speed, whether we observe them or not.
But this is not the case in the quantum realm, according to the Copenhagen interpretation developed by Heisenberg and Danish physicist Niels Bohr in the 1920s.
It is only when an observer measures a quantum object that it settles on a specific state from the possible options, goes the theory. This is described as its wave function "collapsing" into a single possibility.
The most famous depiction of this idea is
Schroedinger's cat
, which remains simultaneously alive and dead in a box, until someone peeks inside.
The Copenhagen interpretation "is the simplest we have", Brazilian physics philosopher Decio Krause told Nature after responding to the survey.
Despite the theory's problems, such as not explaining why measurement has this effect, the alternatives "present other problems which, to me, are worse," he said.
Enter the multiverse
But the majority of the physicists supported other ideas.
Fifteen per cent of the respondents opted for the "many worlds" interpretation, one of several theories in physics that propose we live in a multiverse.
It asserts that the wave function does not collapse, but instead branches off into as many universes as there are possible outcomes.
So when an observer measures a particle, they get the position for their world -- but it is in all other possible positions across many parallel universes.
"It requires a dramatic readjustment of our intuitions about the world, but to me that's just what we should expect from a fundamental theory of reality," US theoretical physicist Sean Carroll said in the survey.
The quantum experts were split on other big questions facing the field.
Is there some kind of boundary between the quantum and classical worlds, where the laws of physics suddenly change?
Forty-five per cent of the physicists responded yes to this question and the exact same percentage responded no.
Just 24 per cent said they were confident the quantum interpretation they chose was correct.
And three-quarters believed that it will be replaced by a more comprehensive theory one day.

CLOVES Syndrome, in which the letters stand for: Congenital; Lipomatous; Overgrowth; Vascular malformations ; Epidermal nevi and Spinal/skeletal anomalies/Scoliosis, is very a rare condition, with only about 200 cases or less are believed to have been reported worldwide. Here is all you need to know about it. What is CLOVES syndrome? CLOVES Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. Researchers believe it is caused by mutations in a gene called PIK3CA. According to the National Cancer Institute, U.S., this gene makes one of the proteins in an enzyme called PI3K, which is involved in many important functions in a cell. 'Mutations (changes) in the PIK3CA gene may cause the PI3K enzyme to become overactive, which may cause cancer cells to grow. PIK3CA gene mutations have been found in many types of cancer, including cancers of the breast, lung, ovary, stomach, brain, colon, and rectum. They have also been found in some genetic conditions,' the website states. CLOVES Syndrome is an overgrowth disorder, part of a larger group of similar disorders called PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum or PROS. When was it first discovered? The U.S.-based non-profit National Organisation for Rare Disorders (NORD) states that CLOVES syndrome was described independently by [Julie C.] Sapp and colleagues in 2007 and [Ahmad I.] Alomari in 2009, making it a relatively new classification. The website however notes that a case report by the German physician Hermann Friedberg, 'gigantism of the right lower limb' published in 1867 is probably the first known written account of CLOVES syndrome. Who is at risk? The mutations in the PIK3CA gene are believed to occur spontaneously in the womb. CLOVES syndrome is not hereditary and cannot be passed on. At present, there are no known risk factors. As per the NORD, it is believed that mutations in the gene result in two sets of cells in the body (one set with the mutation and one set without) and the mutated cells lead to the formation of abnormal tissue. It also states that CLOVES syndrome affects males and females equally regardless of their race or ethnicity. What are the signs and symptoms of CLOVES syndrome? Babies are born with this condition. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may vary from child to child. Symptoms include: soft masses of fatty tissue on the abdomen, back, sides and buttocks; vascular or blood vessel anomalies such as dilated veins that may be seen in the chest, arms and legs and that may pose a risk of blood clots; large and wide hands or feet, with large gaps between fingers and toes; 'port wine stain' birthmarks; spinal problems such as scoliosis or a tethered cord; kidney problems; skin abnormalities such as raised bumps, and sometimes, intestinal problems and asymmetry in growth. How is CLOVES syndrome diagnosed? Doctors may diagnose CLOVES syndrome with a detailed physical examination, medical history and through various imaging tests such as MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds and X-rays. A confirmation of the diagnosis can be made with molecular genetic testing for the mutation. Not all patients with CLOVES syndrome will have all the signs, and some signs may be subtle. Detailed, expert medical examinations are necessary. With the condition being so rare however, many healthcare providers are often not aware of it. Children with CLOVES syndrome are often misdiagnosed as having other syndromes. How is CLOVES syndrome treated? There is no cure as yet for CLOVES syndrome. However, with the right diagnosis, healthcare providers can help patients manage symptoms. Treating CLOVES syndrome usually involves a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Treatment options may include: drugs, to suppress the immune system and slow growth of abnormal vessels; sclerotherapy, which helps reduce the size of vascular malformations; embolisation, a minimally invasive procedure that blocks blood vessels and debaulking surgery to help remove overgrown tissue. Other orthopaedic or neuro surgeries may be required too. Rehabilitation therapies may also be prescribed. What is the scenario in India? A few cases of CLOVES syndrome have been documented in India. In 2019, Vikram K. Mahajan et al, wrote in the Indian Dermatology Journal Online of a three-year-old boy believed to have the syndrome. Another case of an eight-year-old boy was described by Pallavi Hegde et al in the Indian Journal of Paediatric Dermatology in 2022. Yet another case, of a 10-month-old boy was described by Ankur Singhal et al in the Indian Journal of Postgraduate Dermatology in 2024. The paper noted, 'CLOVES syndrome is exceptionally rare, and research in this area is predominantly limited to a scant body of published literature... We are presenting this case to contribute to medical literature by providing a comprehensive account on CLOVES syndrome.'

Can a broken heart really kill you? Science says yes — here's why

Representational Image/Pixabay The death of someone deeply loved is one of life's most painful experiences. But beyond the emotional toll, new research suggests that grief can actually shorten lives. A decade-long study from Denmark has found that people enduring the most severe and unrelenting grief were far more likely to die within 10 years of their bereavement than those who coped with it more mildly. Published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, the research tracked the health of more than 1,700 bereaved individuals for a decade and concluded that grief isn't just an emotional wound — it can trigger a cascade of physical consequences that may ultimately be fatal. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Tracking grief over a decade Beginning in 2012, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark recruited 1,735 people who had recently lost a loved one — most were women, and their average age was 62. Nearly two-thirds of participants had lost a partner, 27 per cent had lost a parent, and about seven percent had experienced the death of another close relative. The participants were asked to complete detailed surveys on their grief when they enrolled, then again after six months, and once more after three years. These questionnaires helped scientists categorise the severity of their grief over time and to observe how their symptoms evolved or persisted. The researchers identified five distinct grief patterns, or 'trajectories': Persistently low symptoms – 38 per cent of participants displayed relatively mild grief responses that didn't disrupt daily life significantly. High but easing symptoms – 18 per cent started with intense grief that gradually diminished. Moderate but easing symptoms – 29 per cent had mid-range symptoms that lessened over time. Delayed peak symptoms – 9 per cent began with lower levels of grief, which spiked about six months after the loss before tapering off. Persistent high symptoms – 6 per cent remained at consistently elevated levels of grief with little or no relief. It was this last group that faced the gravest risks. The numbers paint a stark picture Over the 10-year follow-up, researchers found that 26.5 per cent of those in the 'high grief' group had died, compared to just 7.3 per cent in the group with the lowest grief symptoms. Those with the most unrelenting sorrow had an 88 per cent higher mortality risk than those with milder grief. The study also found that participants suffering from persistent grief were far more likely to be prescribed antidepressants and to continue mental health therapy years after their loss. Their reliance on primary care and psychiatric services was notably higher in the first three years — though by year seven, these differences began to level off. Researchers stressed that the study didn't determine the exact causes of death among the bereaved. But it strongly reinforces previous evidence that intense emotional distress can lead to serious health consequences. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We have previously found a connection between high grief symptom levels and higher rates of cardiovascular disease, mental health problems, and even suicide. But the association with mortality should be further investigated,' said Dr. Mette Kjærgaard Nielsen, a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University and a coauthor of the study, said in a statement. How grief impacts the body Grief triggers stress responses that can damage the body over time. One well-documented condition, broken heart syndrome — also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy — can appear suddenly after an intense emotional event, such as the loss of a loved one. In this condition, the heart temporarily enlarges and struggles to pump blood efficiently, creating symptoms that can be mistaken for a heart attack. While broken heart syndrome is more commonly diagnosed in women, men who experience it have a higher likelihood of dying from the condition, according to a separate study published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Heart Association. But the effects of grief are not limited to acute heart failure. Prolonged sorrow can lead to elevated blood pressure, chronic inflammation, disrupted hormone levels such as cortisol, and a weakened immune system. Previous research has shown that bereaved spouses and partners face higher risks of dying from heart disease or suicide in the first three years after their loss. For men, there is also an elevated risk of fatal respiratory or digestive issues. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Identifying those most vulnerable The research also shed light on who might be at greatest risk. Many in the 'high grief' category already showed signs of mental health fragility before their loss, with a higher likelihood of having been prescribed psychiatric medications. 'That suggests that they had signs of mental vulnerability which may cause greater distress on bereavement,' Nielsen explained. This insight could help doctors intervene earlier. 'A GP could look for previous signs of depression and other severe mental health conditions,' Nielsen said. 'They can then offer these patients tailored follow-up in general practice, or refer them to a private practice psychologist or secondary care. The GP may also suggest a bereavement follow-up appointment focusing on mental health.' Can therapy change the outcome? The study did not evaluate whether therapy or counselling reduced the likelihood of early death among the most grief-stricken participants. But Nielsen believes there is value in seeking help: 'I would say that they may benefit from specific grief therapy.' Grief therapy, support groups, and structured bereavement follow-ups may help blunt the long-term harm that chronic grief inflicts.
