Now, travel to and from Rapid Metro stations in East Delhi on AC electric buses

Indian Express06-05-2025
In a bid to enhance last-mile connectivity for commuters using the Namo Bharat corridor, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has partnered with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to integrate electric air-conditioned buses with key stations in East Delhi, the NCRTC said in a statement.
Under this initiative, three electric bus routes have been linked with Namo Bharat stations at New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar. Delhi Electric Vehicle Interchange (DEVI) Scheme buses will be running on these routes.
The identified routes include:
-New Ashok Nagar Namo Bharat Station to Anand Vihar ISBT
-A second connecting Anand Vihar ISBT to Ashok Nagar Border
-And a third route from Ashok Nagar Border to Mayur Vihar Phase-3 Paper Market.
One of these routes begins directly from the New Ashok Nagar station.
The buses will be operational between 6.30 am and 11 pm, and they connect a number of residential and commercial localities such as Chilla Village, Sapera Basti, New Kondli, Dallupura, Ghazipur Village and Mandi, Dharmshila Crossing and Trilokpuri to the Namo Bharat network.
This integration aims to make high-speed travel to Ghaziabad and Meerut more accessible and convenient, particularly for residents in these neighbourhoods, according to NCRTC.
Currently, 55 km of the 82 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor — from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South — is operational with 11 stations.
Trial runs are ongoing on the remaining stretches between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and between Meerut South and Modipuram. The full corridor is expected to be operational within the year.

In trans-Yamuna region, hurdles in route mapping delaying DEVi bus trials

As the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) begins trial runs of its compact 9-metre Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVi) buses in the trans-Yamuna region, the ambitious neighbourhood bus service is running into real-world roadblocks. From electric poles and trees in the middle of narrow streets to shifting weekly markets, illegal parking, and roadside encroachments, officials say several logistical challenges are complicating route rationalisation in East Delhi. The Delhi government, in collaboration with researchers from IIT Delhi, initiated the route-mapping project earlier this year to prepare for the roll-out of DEVi buses, first introduced in 2023 by the AAP government as Mohalla buses. The rebranded service was formally launched by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on May 2 from Ghazipur, Nangloi, and East Vinod Nagar depots, with 400 buses flagged off. Building on that, the Chief Minister on July 15 announced that a pilot route planning project would begin in Yamuna Vihar, with the goal of replicating the model across the Capital. Logistical hurdles However, the on-ground reality in East Delhi's dense neighbourhoods is proving complex. 'From electric poles at intersections, trees blocking turns, to narrow culverts and roadside markets, everything affects whether and when a bus can pass,' said a senior DTC official involved in the trial runs. He cited weekly markets that occupy different lanes on different days, affecting day-wise accessibility. 'If a market runs on Tuesdays in one locality, buses may have to avoid that route from 4 p.m. onwards. In Trilokpuri, for instance, there's simply not enough space for a DEVi bus to turn around when the market is active. Only bikes or cycles can pass through,' the official said. In cases involving trees or power poles, temporary route detours are the only solution for now. Removing electric poles involves multiple agencies and long processes, and the corporation has clarified that it has no intention of cutting down trees obstructing narrow lanes. Community cooperation For encroachments by private shops or illegal parking, officials say community support is critical. 'Large-scale removal of encroachments often causes unrest. But if Resident Welfare Associations and market bodies cooperate, the process becomes much easier,' the official added. Despite these operational snags, another senior official exuded confidence and said the problems will be ironed out in the long term. 'It is a one-of-a-kind initiative in India. There is no ready model to copy. These logistical issues are being mapped as we go. In the next neighbourhoods, we will be better prepared,' the official said. A similar model was tested earlier by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 2019 with its 9-metre feeder buses from Shastri Park and Majlis Park depots. However, the buses, run by private operators, were transferred to Delhi Integrated Multimodal Transit System (DIMTS) in 2023 after struggling with profitability and route rationalisation. 'The biggest issue was route planning. Limited buses and inconsistent connectivity made the feeder model unviable as a last-mile option,' said a senior DMRC official.

NCRTC plan: Rail body begins sourcing power via exchange for Ghaziabad station; eyes Rs 1 crore cut in annual energy bill from first drawl point

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has started procuring electricity through the power exchange for its Receiving Sub-Station (RSS) in Ghaziabad, in a bid to reduce operational expenses and push green energy adoption. The Ghaziabad RSS serves as the interconnection point between the Namo Bharat corridor and the national power grid. According to an official statement, the initiative marks NCRTC's shift to more cost-effective and cleaner power sources for both train operations and station infrastructure, PTI reported. This move is expected to generate annual savings of around Rs 1 crore from a single drawl point in its first year, NCRTC said. The corporation currently consumes approximately 326 million units of electricity annually, incurring energy costs of nearly Rs 300 crore. Power expenditure accounts for 30–35% of NCRTC's total operational costs. To facilitate this transition, NCRTC has entered into agreements with Power Trading Corporation (PTC India Ltd) and Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL). Power purchased via the exchange is expected to be more economical than traditional distribution utility sources, it said. As part of its sustainability goals, NCRTC also aims to procure at least 15% of its annual power requirement from green energy through the exchange model. The initiative is being implemented in phases, beginning with operational segments of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor. It will later be expanded to other drawl points in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as more sections become operational. Currently, 55 km of the corridor and 11 stations are in service, with full commissioning slated for later this year. 'Plant at Sanand is almost completed,' the minister added. Jabil's customers' list includes 300 of the biggest brands in the world in every market from healthcare, packaging, smartphones and cloud equipment to automotive and home appliances. Meanwhile, the Central government said it has disbursed Rs 1,162 crore under the Telecom Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme till March 31, according to data shared by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This scheme, launched on April 1, 2021, aims to boost domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in the telecom sector. It is scheduled to conclude at the end of the current financial year. Out of 42 companies shortlisted under the scheme, 21 manufacturers have successfully received the incentives so far. The government had earmarked Rs 4,115 crore for the scheme with the goal of generating an estimated Rs 2.45 lakh crore in additional sales and creating over 44,000 new jobs during its run. Jabil emerged as the top beneficiary, receiving Rs 235.87 crore in incentives over two financial years. Other major recipients include Flextronics (Rs 165.12 crore), Nokia (Rs 157.32 crore), Foxconn's Rising Stars (Rs 80.33 crore), and Syrma SGS (Rs 53.23 crore). Industry experts believe that stronger alignment between telecom operators and the government's vision is needed. They stress the importance of encouraging the procurement of telecom products with higher local value addition to truly support the goals of self-reliance and job creation.
