Tennessee Titans training camp: 5 takeaways from Day 9
Like every practice in training camp, there were highs and lows, and the physicality got tempers flaring, setting off the first altercations of training camp. The defense bounced back and won the day, while the offense struggled after back-to-back solid outings.
Here are five takeaways from the Titans' ninth practice of training camp.
Tempers flare
With the intensity of practice ramping up over the past few days, it was only a matter of time before players started to lose their cool, and it happened twice on Sunday. First, Mason Kinsey and Jarvis Brownlee got into a shoving match that teammates quickly broke up. This comes as no surprise, as Brownlee has been feisty and physical during camp, and caught the ire of Calvin Ridley on Saturday.
The festivities didn't stop with Kinsey and Brownlee, as veterans Jeffery Simmons and JC Latham decided to take their physical battle up a notch before being separated by their teammates.
Offensive struggles
The offense started with a solid 7-on-7 period and went downhill from there. They weren't crisp; balls hit the ground, and the unit took a step in the wrong direction. Not only did the defense set the tone, but it also let the offense know about it, and eventually, head coach Brian Callahan joined in and made it clear that their performance on the field was lacking on Sunday.
Tight ends are making plays
The early 7-on-7 work in the red zone might have been the only real positive for the offense, and the tight end unit was the catalyst. Gunnar Helm, David Martin-Robinson, and Drake Dabney all pulled in touchdowns.
There is a good battle taking place within that unit, and it appears to be one of the deepest positions on the roster. Starter Chig Okonkwo has been solid and flashing even more big-play potential, and Helm, Martin-Robinson, and Josh Whyle have flashed in recent days.
Slye bounces back
Kicker Joey Slye bounced back after a rough day and showed the accuracy that the Titans are counting on in 2025. He was a perfect 6-of-6 on Sunday with a long of 54 yards. Sley is now 31-of-36 in camp. Of course, these kicks lack game pressure, so monitoring how he does against the air will be important as the Titans progress through training camp.
Injury front
The Titans saw a couple of players leave the field on Sunday, including rookie safety Kevin Byard and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins. While Winston was planned, as the team is monitoring his knee after missing the offseason recovering from ACL surgery, Winston was not.
The team once again held out T'Vondre Sweat, Blake Hance, and Chandler Brewer due to injury, but all three are considered day-to-day.
After practice, offensive line coach Bill Callahan spoke about center Lloyd Cushenberry and was excited about his potential return, stating he is optimistic he will be returning sooner rather than later.
Kevin Zeitler was given the day off.

Former Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, and Detroit Lions assistant Terrell Williams is in his first season as the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, and his first training camp with the team will likely be one he remembers for a while. Williams, who spent last season as the defensive line coach/run game coordinator for the NFC's top-seeded Lions, was all over social media after he suffered a pretty significant medical scare during practice on Monday. The 51-year-old assistant coach collapsed during practice and was carted off the field on a stretcher, according to multiple reports. The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed reported that Williams was treated for dehydration and his prognosis was positive, though the team was taking extra precautions with him after the incident. Top Lions CB to Miss Significant Time After Suffering Concerning Injury
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Lions were ravaged by injuries for most of last season, and the team limped into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed with several injuries on defense, including star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Though the regular season is a little over four weeks away, the Lions are still battling the injury bug a week into training camp. The team has already announced that starting defensive end Levi Onwuzurike will miss the regular season after undergoing offseason ACL surgery, and several other defensive contributors have went down with varying injuries this offseason including defensive tackles Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo, defensive end Josh Paschal, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Khalil Dorsey, and safety Dan Jackson, who was placed on injured reserve. More NFL: Legendary Browns QB Sends Ominous Shedeur Sanders Warning to Team The punches kept coming on Monday as head coach Dan Campbell announced that cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Detroit's second-round pick in the 2024 draft, would miss some significant time with a shoulder injury. "[It's] tough to say [how long he'll miss]," Campbell told reporters on Monday. "It's a shoulder. I think it's going to be a while, at best. "... We're getting it checked now, and we'll know more in due time. You hate it for the kid, you hate it. It's not his fault, and just one of those tough deals. All you can do is try to get it better, rehab, and try to come back stronger and move on — that's all you can do." "It kind of was a redshirt year," Rakestraw said, via the team's official website. "But you don't get to pick those situations. Don't nobody just pick to be hurt. You know, I never picked it for myself." More NFL: Browns Sign Pro Bowl QB After Injuries to Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel With Carlton Davis now with the New England Patriots and Kindle Vildor with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rakestraw was seemingly poised to play a key role in Detroit's secondary along with Arnold, D.J. Reed, and Amik Robertson. And despite having a new injury setback, it's clear based off how he handled last year Rakestraw will be highly motivated once he is cleared to play again. "Every situation that came to me — ask anybody in the training room, anybody in the building — I took it under the chin and I kept going, showed face, smiled every day and it just didn't go my way," Rakestraw said of his injury woes last season. "...Now, let's develop a new habit, new body and be available. That's all I can do."

49ers receiver Jauan Jennings (calf) remains out of practice
Before training camp opened, reports emerged that 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings wanted a new contract or a trade. He didn't hold out. He could be holding in. Jennings suffered a calf injury during training camp on July 27. (It apparently was an aggravation of an offseason injury.) He has yet to practice since then. On Monday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about Jennings's ongoing absence. 'Same thing with his calf,' Shanahan said. Shanahan then was asked if it's 'definitely health-related, not business-related'? 'You can ask him that, but he tells me it's his calf and the calf shows,' Shanahan said. 'So, got to be delicate with those calves.' It could be a combination of health and business. If Jennings was happy with his contract, maybe he'd push through it. Because he isn't happy with his contract, he isn't. Jennings is in the second year of a two-year, $11.89 million contract. The contract was surprisingly light, given that he had a Super Bowl LVIII performance that had him on the short list of potential MVP candidates, before the 49ers lost to the Chiefs. Last year, Jennings had a career-high 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns. With Deebo Samuel gone and Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from a torn ACL suffered during the 2024 season, Jennings seems to merit an increase. He may not be doing much until he gets one.
