(AP pic) SINGAPORE : A fit and firing Gretchen Walsh completed a butterfly double at swimming's world championships in Singapore on Saturday, romping to victory in the 50m event. The American, who won the 100m butterfly earlier in the week, touched the wall in 24.83 seconds, beating Australia's Alexandria Perkins (25.31) and Belgium's Roos Vanotterdijk (25.43). Walsh said she felt 'fragile' before her 100m win after going down with a stomach bug that has swept through the American camp. She was back to full strength for the fast and furious 50m, which will become an Olympic event for the first time at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. 'I'm very proud,' said the 22-year-old Walsh. 'That was a great swim, it was great to feel like myself again in the water after kind of a rocky meet, but two-time world champion, can't complain with that.' Sweden's Sarah Sjoestroem, the world record holder and a six-time world champion in the event, is not competing in Singapore. Walsh took advantage of her absence and showed that she will be a force to reckon with in LA in three years' time. Walsh's performance also offered a riposte to swimming legends Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who have been critical of the American team's displays in Singapore. Six-time Olympic gold medallist Lochte on Friday shared an image on Instagram depicting a funeral that featured a tombstone inscribed: 'In loving memory of United States Swimming.' 'They set the bar high – until they stopped reaching for it,' the inscription says, Lochte adding the caption: 'Call it a funeral or call it a fresh start. We've got 3 years.' Phelps, who counts a stunning 23 gold among his 28 Olympic medals, shared Lochte's post, adding, 'Is this the wake-up call USA swimming needed?'

Zverev rallies in Toronto to claim milestone 500th ATP match win
TORONTO, Aug 1 — Top seed Alexander Zverev switched into survival mode to claim a milestone 500th ATP match win on Thursday, fighting back to beat Matteo Arnaldi 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2 at the Toronto Masters. Germany's Zverev broke twice in the deciding third set to reach the fourth round of the US Open tuneup, converting his second match point to back up his defeat of the Italian ealier this year in Acapulco. 'It's a great achievement,' Zverev, winner of 24 ATP titles, said of reaching 500 career match wins. 'Not a lot of player reach this milestone. 'But I still want 500 more — maybe even more,' he joked. 'You always want to win as many matches as possible. I'm all about this.' Unable to gain the upper hand in an 82-minute first set, Zverev said his game improved as the minutes dragged on against 2024 Canadian semi-finalist Arnaldi. 'I started playing better from the baseline and found my rhythm a bit. My backhand felt off but I was comfortable and happy with my level,' added Zverev who next faces Francisco Cerundolo — a 6-3, 6-4 winner over fellow Argentine Tomas Echeverry. Alex Michelsen reached a Masters 1000 fourth round for the first time with a 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 upset victory over third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti. The 20-year-old American survived nearly 50 unforced errors and converted just two of nine break chances, but it was enough to vanquish Italy's Musetti, a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist ranked 10th in the world. 'It feels really good,' the 26th-ranked Michelsen said after finally converting his seventh match point. 'I've put in a lot of hard work and it's paying off a little bit. I was wondering when it would happen and I guess it is starting to happen right now. 'I returned really well today,' he added. 'I played offensive tennis and executed really well.' Ruud rallies Eighth-seeded Casper Ruud shook off a slow start to beat Portugal's Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-4. The Norwegian was playing only his fourth match since Roland Garros after missing Wimbledon because of injury. Trailing 4-1 in the first set, Ruud thwarted Borges's two chances for a 5-1 lead, methodically lifting his game and taking control with a late break before earning the lone break of the second set for his 20th win of the season. 'I just crawled into the first set,' said Ruud, who fired nine aces. 'I was able to get back into it. One break and things can happen. I raised my return game and got more balls back into play. 'In the second set I got the break and served my way through.' Despite his sluggish start, Ruud was delighted to beat Borges after falling to him at Roland Garros in May. 'It was nice to get my revenge,' said Ruud, who next faces 11th-seeded Karen Khachanov. Khachanov, seeded 11th defeated US qualifier Emilio Nava 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-1 to book his second Masters round of 16 spot this season. Top seed Gauff rallies to reach WTA Montreal fourth round
MONTREAL, Aug 1 — World number two Coco Gauff battled through another tough three-setter Thursday, rallying from a set and a break down to beat Veronika Kudermetova and reach the fourth round of the WTA Canadian Open. The top-seeded American, who won her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, again struggled with her serve but held her nerve for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over former world number nine Kudermetova. 'The goal of the game is to survive and advance,' Gauff said. 'It's not my best, but it was good enough for today and that's all I can ask for.' Gauff arrived in Montreal having lost her tournament openers at Wimbledon and Berlin in the wake of her French Open triumph. She struggled mightily in her first match in Montreal but came up with a win over Danielle Collins despite 23 double faults. The numbers weren't quite as ugly against Kudermetova, but 14 double faults were damaging enough. Seven of them came in the first set, as Gauff let a 4-1 lead get away. She had three more double faults in the opening game of the second set to hand Kudermetova a service break, but broke back to level the set at 3-3 and broke Kudermetova to force a third, seizing a 2-0 lead and powering home from there. 'I'm sure everybody could read my body language,' said Gauff, whose frustration was clear. 'But mentally I'm very proud of myself. There's obviously parts of my game to work on, one of that being the serve. 'And the fact that I'm winning these matches not feeling my best is definitely something to be proud of.' In other third-round action, American McCartney Kessler shocked world number five Mirra Andreeva, who got off to a strong start but couldn't hang on in a 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 loss. Andreeva, the 18-year-old Russian who electrified the WTA with back-to-back 1000 level wins this year, was playing her first tournament since a quarter-final run at Wimbledon and her first match of the week after a first-round bye and a second-round walkover. She jumped to a quick 3-1 lead, but Kessler twice regained a break and after Andreeva failed on two attempts to serve out the opening set the American won the last three points of the tiebreaker to pocket the set. Kessler seized the initiative in the second, breaking Andreeva twice on the way to a 4-1 lead. Making matters worse for the inconsistent Andreeva, she took a hard spill in the second set, taking a medical time out to have her left ankle bandaged in what could be a worrying sign with the US Open due to start on August 24. Kessler will fight for her first WTA 1000 quarter-final appearance against Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who beat Daria Kasatkina 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/4). — AFP
