Former India spinner Dilip Doshi passes away at 77
LONDON: Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi passed away due to cardiac arrest here on Monday. He was 77. Doshi played 33 Tests and 15 ODIs from 1979 to 1983.
Mourning the death of Doshi, the Saurashtra Cricket Association, whom Doshi represented in first-class cricket, stated, "The SCA is deeply pained and very sad at the passing away of Dilip Doshi, a revered, distinguished, and prominent figure in the world of cricket.
He left for his heavenly abode today in London. He has left behind a rich legacy of sportsmanship, commitment, and excellence. The legendary left-arm spinner was a stalwart of Indian cricket, renowned for his unparalleled skill and dedication to the game."

Doshi had recently attended the BCCI Awards function and the World Test Championship final at Lord's earlier this month.
"Doshi was a true and spirited Saurashtrian and a legendary left-arm leg-spinner in the cricket world.
Despite his late India debut, he achieved many remarkable milestones and was a pure match-winner. Dilipbhai reached the 100-wicket mark in only 28 Tests. He played 33 Tests and took 114 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls. He played 238 first-class matches, taking a staggering 898 wickets, including 43 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket hauls.
In 15 ODIs, he took 22 wickets, including two four-wicket hauls.
These figures say it all about his class."
"Dilipbhai's passion for cricket was exceptional and beyond compare. He rated his five-wicket haul in the Melbourne Test in 1981 against Australia as his best performance. He continued bowling in spite of acute pain due to a fractured toe. He did it because he believed Team India would win the match. Such was the depth of his passion for the game. Sir Garfield Sobers had rightly said that 'Dilip Doshi has an immeasurable knowledge to pass on to those who want to follow his path into professional cricket.
He has played at all levels over the world and there can be no one more qualified to talk about the art of spin bowling.'"
Expressing his "profound grief" at Doshi's passing, Niranjan Shah, former secretary of the BCCI, said: 'It is an extremely painful and personal loss for me. Dilip was not only one of the legendary cricketers, but also one of the finest human beings I have ever known. His noble heart, integrity, and priceless dedication to the game made him truly special.
He was family—someone I shared not just cricketing conversations with, but also a deep bond built on mutual respect and affection.
His presence always brought warmth, humility, and positive energy. The void he leaves behind is beyond words. It is not just the world of cricket, but my own heart that feels his absence deeply. I shall always cherish the beautiful memories and moments we spent together. His legacy will live on through the many lives he inspired.'

SCA president Jaydev Shah stated: 'His passing is an irreparable loss to the cricketing fraternity, and to all of us who had the honour of knowing him. His legacy, both as a player and a person, will continue to live in our hearts and in the history of cricket. This is an incredibly painful and personal loss for me. He was not just a legendary cricketer—he was my uncle, my mentor, and someone I looked up to throughout my life.
His deep love for the sport, disciplined approach, and graceful conduct made him a role model for generations. For many of us, he was not only a hero on the field but also a guide and a well-wisher off it. Indian cricket has lost a true legend today. Everyone at the SCA conveys his/her heartfelt condolences to the late Dilip Doshi's family and prays to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to his noble soul."

Rising star Keymer expects plenty of hard-fought games at Chennai Grand Masters
Vincent Keymer is a rising star in the world of chess. The 20-year-old German has some impressive triumphs in his CV but his claim to fame among Indians would be working as a second in D. Gukesh's team during his victorious World championship campaign over Ding Liren late last year. The World No. 21 is in the city for the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters tournament, beginning on Wednesday. 'It is a very interesting field. There are many young and ambitious players, so I am expecting a lot of hard-fought games. I just want to play good chess,' he told The Hindu. About working with Gukesh, Keymer said 'It was certainly special for me. It was the first time that I did this kind of work and it was interesting.' Special ability 'I learnt quite a few things during that time. It is very tough to say what exactly translates into my play or level, but there are things that I learnt that are helpful for my own performances,' he said. Asked what was special about Gukesh, he said the Indian is quite flexible in his repertoire. 'Of course, his fighting spirit is very good… he can find a way and understand positions that are very tough to understand. He also calculates extremely well.' Emphasising that qualifying for the Candidates, the tournament to identify the challenger to Gukesh, would be tough, Keymer said, 'Qualifying for the Candidates is more or less the main focus for the next few months. ' Obviously, it is going to be very tough, but I am going to give it my all.'

Sirajs brother, friend express happiness at pacers performance in Indias win at The Oval
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 4 (ANI): Following pacer Mohammed Siraj's inspiring nine-wicket haul at The Oval in India's win by six runs, the bowler's brother, Mohammed Ismail, expressed happiness at his efforts, saying that the family is very proud of him. Siraj continued his fine run in overseas Test matches, delivering yet another bowling masterclass as his spell in tandem with pacer Prasidh Krishna left England six runs short of the 374-run target in London and helped a new-look Shubman Gill-led India draw the series 2-2. Speaking to ANI, Ismail said, "We are feeling very proud. I want to congratulate him and all his teammates for making history. I just had a conversation with him, and he was very happy. I congratulated him, and I cannot wait for him to come back to India." Also, Siraj's friend, Irfan, told ANI, "It is a matter of great happiness to us that Siraj did so well. On this auspicious occasion, we are celebrating in Hyderabad. We have also got firecrackers for the celebration. I have not talked to him yet." Siraj kickstarted the match with a 4/86 in the first innings, bowling well in tandem with Prasidh Krishna to restrict England to 247 runs and allowing for a slight 23-run lead. As per Wisden, Siraj overtook the spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekhar's 8-114 in the famous 1971 triumph; this is also the fifth-best bowling figures by an Indian in England, with Akash Deep's ten-fer for 187 runs at Birmingham being at the top. Siraj's The Oval figures are best by any bowler at the venue, be it the English or visiting, since late Aussie legend Shane Warne's 12/246 back in 2005. Siraj also finished the series with 23 wickets, levelling with his 'Jassi Bhai' Jasprit Bumrah for most against England in the Test series. Bumrah had taken 23 scalps during the 2021-22 tour. Siraj's wicket tally in England has gone up to 46 scalps in 11 innings at an average of 33.21, with two five-wicket hauls to his name. His best figures in England are 6/70, in an innings. Siraj's 46 wickets in England are the third-most for an Indian, after Bumrah and Ishant Sharma (51 each). After England opted to bowl first, they reduced India to 153/6. A 58-run partnership between Karun Nair (57 in 109 balls, with eight fours) and Washington Sundar (26 in 55 balls, with three fours) was the most meaningful part of the inning as India was bundled out for 224 runs. Apart from Gus Atkinson's five-wicket haul, Josh Tongue (3/57) was also good. In the second innings, four-fers from Siraj (4/86) and Prasidh Krishna (4/62) reduced England to 247, despite a 92-run opening stand between Zak Crawley (64 in 57 balls, with 14 fours) and Ben Duckett (43 in 38 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and a fifty by Harry Brook (53 in 64 balls, with five fours and a six). They led by 23 runs. In India's second innings, key contributions came from Yashasvi Jaiswal (118 in 164 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes), Akash Deep (66 in 94 balls, with 12 fours), Ravindra Jadeja (53 in 77 balls, with five fours) and Washington Sundar (53 in 46 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes). Sundar stitched a very crucial 10th wicket stand with Krishna, with the latter scoring nothing out of it and Sundar doing all the hitting. They all took India to 396 runs, giving them a 373-run lead and setting a target of 374 runs for England to win the series. India started well, reducing England to 106/3. However, fine centuries from Harry Brook (111 in 98 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes) and Joe Root (105 in 152 balls, with 12 fours) troubled India with a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket. At one point, England was 317/4 on day four. However, a late surge by Siraj (5/104) and Krishna (4/126) shifted the pressure to England, and they were left six runs short, bundled out for 367 runs.
