Opposition Condemns ‘Manhandling' Of Omar Abdullah By J&K Police, BJP Says ‘CM Fighting…'

Opposition parties have condemned the 'manhandling" of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by police a s he attempted to enter Naqshband Sahib graveyard t o pay tribute to 22 people killed by the Dogra army in 1931.
The dramatic scenes unfolded a day after Abdullah and several leaders of the National Conference and opposition parties were allegedly put under house arrest to prevent them from going to the graveyard to mark Martyrs' Day on July 13.
However, Abdullah dodged the security forces and made a surprise visit to the graveyard. With gates closed, the CM climbed over the main gate and entered the graveyard premises to offer 'fateha'.
In a post on X, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said the incident is unfortunate and unacceptable.
'What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen. What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful." she wrote.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin questioned if it was appropriate for an elected chief minister to be treated in the same manner as Abdullah.
Attacking the BJP, Stalin alleged that the Centre is systematically stripping away the rights of elected state governments from Tamil Nadu to Kashmir.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also took a poetic jibe at the Centre.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also reacted to the incident and said, 'It is reprehensible that the unelected police and unelected administration of Delhi are trying to control an elected Chief Minister. Elected leaders are being put under house arrest… The LG of J&K has accepted that he is taking responsibility for the Pahalgam attack… If he is taking responsibility to save Delhi, to become its shield, then resign…"
D Raja, General Secretary, Communist Party of India (CPI) said it is utterly unacceptable that in Jammu & Kashmir, the LG's administration and J&K Police prevented even the elected CM, along with citizens and leaders, from paying their respects at the Martyrs' graveyard on July 13, arresting and manhandling them.
'Adding to this insult, numerous leaders were placed under house arrest, silenced within their own homes on a day of collective remembrance. This is not just a breach of democratic norms. It's a blatant assault on our conscience and a reminder of how far governance in J&K has fallen under authoritarian unaccountable rule. CPI demands immediate restoration of statehood—no ifs, no buts—so that the people's representatives can truly serve, instead of being silenced and subjugated," he wrote.
CM Fighting With Police: BJP
Sunil Sharma, Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, said it is very unfortunate that an elected Chief Minister jumps over the boundary wall of Mazar-e-Shuhada and engages in a scuffle with police.
'We are the ones who form laws, we should not take it into our hands…The youth can also come onto the streets by holding stones, getting provoked as the chief minister is fighting with the police," he said.
We're Nobody's Slaves: CM Abdullah
Omar Abdullah said it is unfortunate that, by the orders of those who claim their responsibility is to maintain law and order, they were not allowed to recite the Fatiha yesterday. 'Everyone was house-arrested since the morning. When I told the control room that I wanted to come here to recite Fatiha, bunkers were installed outside my house within minutes. And they remained there till 12-1 am. Today, I came here without informing anyone. Today, too, they tried to stop us… I want to know under which law I was stopped… They say that this is a free country, but they think that we are their slaves. We are nobody's slaves. We are only the slaves of the people here… We foiled their attempts… They tried to tear our flag. But we came here and recited the Fatiha. They forget that these graves will always remain here. They stopped us on July 13, but for how long can they continue to do so? We will come here whenever we want and remember the martyrs," he said.

From Gutka oath to FIRs: Drug debate turns personal in Punjab vidhan sabha as Harpal Singh Cheema, Partap Singh Bajwa exchange barbs
Chandigarh: The Punjab assembly turned into a battleground on Tuesday as a fierce and deeply personal debate unfolded over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt's war on drugs. What began as a discussion on the war against drugs led by finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema soon spiralled into a flurry of allegations, counter-allegations, and emotional outbursts, dragging in leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, and others. Cheema kicked off by delving into the roots of the drug menace, tracing it to the tenures of previous regimes. He accused the Congress (2002–2007), led by then CM Captain Amarinder Singh, and the SAD-BJP govt (2007–2017) under Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal, of allowing drugs to infiltrate Punjab. "Before 2007, people only knew opium and 'bhukki'. After that, heroin, smack, and 'chitta' became household terms," said Cheema, holding former Capt Amarinder Singh, and the Badals responsible for the mushrooming of drug cartels. He claimed that under the SAD-BJP rule (2007–2017), drug mafia expanded unchecked, forcing families to send their children abroad. Cheema lambasted Congress for failing to act even after Capt Amarinder Singh, ahead of the 2017 assembly elections, swore on the Gutka Sahib to eliminate drugs within four weeks. "He failed to act. The Congress high command replaced him with Charanjit Singh Channi, yet the problem remained," Cheema said. Defending AAP's efforts, he highlighted that during 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh' (war against drugs), which began on March 1, 13,665 cases were registered against drug traffickers and 21,977 arrests were made, with Rs 11 crore seized in drug money. "When action was taken against prominent offenders, Congress leaders jumped to defend them," he said. Cheema attempted to play a video of former CM Channi allegedly linking Majithia to drugs, but Bajwa objected, asking under which rule a video of a non-member could be played in the vidhan sabha. "Is this a movie theatre?" he asked. Cheema stopped the clip but referenced past debates where, he claimed, Channi equated "chitta" with Majithia. Bajwa accused Cheema of vendetta politics and retaliated: "You filed an FIR against me for a TV interview where I said 50 bombs entered Punjab—18 exploded, 32 are unaccounted for. On whose behest was the FIR registered, Awami League of Pakistan?" asked Bajwa. Cheema fired back: "Bajwa has ties with Pakistan's Awami League. If you mess with us, we will respond firmly." Later, Cheema shared a post by Bajwa on X, accusing him of siding with Manjithia. "It shows you are with them," he said. "We are not afraid of FIRs. Even if Bajwa joins BJP and files a murder case, we will not back down," Cheema said. Bajwa clarified his position in the doctored video circulated by AAP leaders Cheema, Aman Arora, and others, which resulted in FIRs against them. "The original video was mine. I supported MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia over the manner of the raid at her home. I never extended support to her husband," Bajwa said. "Under no circumstances am I with Bikramjit Singh Majithia." He reminded the house that he was the first to move court against Majithia when he was PPCC president 11 years ago and asked the then CM, Parkash Singh Badal, to get the Bhola drug case probed by CBI. "I said then, and I say now, we will tie a noose around Majithia's neck. I never got the chance to act—but if I had, I would have done it long ago," he said. Bajwa held that an NDPS case was registered against Majithia during the Congress govt, but the Supreme Court granted him relief as elections were around the corner. Bajwa added he was arrested by the AAP govt and was released on bail and was later again arrested. Bajwa said Majithia's subsequent arrests under the DA case instead of NDPS had weakened the campaign against him. Khaira rebutted, stating that the Supreme Court stayed the trial, and pointed out that even Bhagwant Mann, then an MP, called it "political vendetta". Cheema responded, "A stay is not an acquittal." He also tendered an apology on Avtar's behalf, which was accepted. SAD's Ayali for collective fight SAD MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali took a more assuaging tone, saying no govt can support sacrilege or drug trade, but stressed that any political leader involved in drugs must face strict action—regardless of their position. He called for cross-party unity to fight the menace.

Debate over ‘infiltration in CG': Dy CM refutes BJP MLA's claims
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh govt is intensifying its efforts against illegal infiltration, particularly of Bangladeshi nationals, who are reportedly settling across the state. This was said by deputy chief minister & home minister Vijay Sharma during a calling attention motion of the Assembly, responding to concerns raised by BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar. Chandrakar highlighted the growing number of infiltrators, particularly in urban centres like Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg, and in tribal-dominated areas, raising fears of 'demographic change and increased crime'. He sought details on the detention and deportation process for those arrested. He said that the state is moving towards establishing 'holding centres' with a capacity of 100 individuals in Raipur, to house those awaiting deportation. Sharma assured the assembly that though lengthy, the process of deportation would certainly move forward under the current govt. Sharma confirmed that all individuals apprehended so far are Bangladeshi nationals, with no Rohingya infiltrators among them. He highlighted an instance in Raipur where a Bangladeshi national obtained an Aadhaar card, EPIC card, and ration card with the help of a local councillor, leading to action against four officials. He reiterated that stringent action would be taken against anyone found aiding those who threaten the state's demography and vitiate its systems. He also alluded to political parties obstructing voter list revision, suggesting it might be an attempt to protect vote banks, an act he vowed would not be tolerated.

State govt dilutes policy to benefit corporates: Cong
