A horrifying end to Liverpool's parade: Today in Focus Extra

The Guardian27-05-2025
'I was just coming towards the end of writing what was a positive, upbeat overview of the whole day,' Andy Hunter, a Guardian football correspondent based in Liverpool, tells Helen Pidd. 'Wrote about how they were memories that would last a lifetime. And then just as I was finishing that and about to send it, I got a call from the desk to say, have you seen what's just happened? And then everything turned in an instant.'
On Monday evening, a car ploughed through crowds of people leaving the Liverpool FC parade. Hundreds of thousands of people had lined the streets to celebrate the team's Premier League win.
Merseyside police confirmed that more than 50 people were injured and treated in hospital, where 11 remain. The force said a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene and the incident was not being treated as terrorism.
'Four children were injured,' Hunter says. 'But there were so many kids there yesterday. It was a family occasion. It was a chance for kids, who wouldn't get the opportunity to go to Anfield, to get a ticket to Anfield and see their heroes in the flesh, to actually see Mo Salah with the Premier League trophy, and, as I say, memories that last a lifetime, and then it's just destroyed in an instant.'

Man Utd forced to immediately change pre-season plans after arriving for US tour

Manchester United have flown out to Chicago for their pre-season tour of the United States, where Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff will try to whip the squad into shape Manchester United are braced for hot weather at the start of their pre-season tour of the United States. United have flown over the Atlantic to take part in the Premier League Summer Series and will have to adapt to scorching temperatures and sapping humidity. ‌ Ruben Amorim and his players trained for the first time with new signing Bryan Mbeumo at Carrington on Tuesday before jetting off America. They will face West Ham in New Jersey on Sunday before games against Bournemouth in Chicago and Everton in Atlanta. ‌ Fans will get a first look at United's new-look attack featuring Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha before they play Fiorentina at Old Trafford in their final pre-season game on August 9. Amorim will then have eight days to make final tweaks before they start their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 17. ‌ There is a lot of work to do – both on the training pitch and in the transfer market – but United have been forced to make changes to their plans in the US due to the weather. The Club World Cup showed just how hot it can be in North America, with matches played in dangerous conditions, and those high temperatures have not subsided. The Daily Mail says that United have taken note of the temperatures in Chicago next week, where they will play Bournemouth at Soldier Field and where they are based for training. The mercury could pass 30 degrees in the Windy City, but the humidity will make it feel much hotter and create stifling conditions for the players. United have factored this into the players' training routines and nutrition plans, with water breaks a must. United's coaching staff have certainly been warned by the much-talked about conditions at the Club World Cup. "Honestly, the heat is incredible. The other day I had to lie down on the ground because I was really dizzy,' Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez said. "Playing in this temperature is very dangerous, it's very dangerous. Moreover, for the spectacle, for the people who come to enjoy the stadium, for the people who watch it at home. The game, the speed of the game is not the same, everything becomes very slow." ‌ Enzo Maresca said it was nearly 'impossible' to train in Philadelphia last month, with temperatures at 37 degrees, but with 45 per cent humidity, which makes it feel like 45 degrees. "This morning's session has been very, very, very short, otherwise you don't save energy for the game,' he said. "It's been just about tomorrow's game, planning for tomorrow, and that's it. No more than that. As you can see, it's not easy in these conditions with these temperatures. We are going to try to do our best." New Gallagher Premiership season to kick-off with Thursday night match... while Villa Park will also be a new venue for the 2025/26 campaign

The 2025/26 Gallagher Premiership season will begin with a Thursday night fixture while the league will also host a match at the home of Aston Villa. On the back of a record-breaking campaign in terms of attendances and television viewership, English rugby's top division is hoping to go to new heights once again. Round one will kick-off with Sale hosting Gloucester on Thursday, September 25 – the first time the Premiership, now officially known as Gallagher PREM, will host a match outside its traditional weekend slot. Thursday night matches are not set to become common. But there is one to start the new season. There are no Saturday matches in round one to avoid a clash with the final of the Women's World Cup which is being hosted by England. In a bid to attract bigger crowds, PREM matches have regularly taken place at larger stadiums including numerous football grounds in recent years. But Aston Villa's Villa Park will be a new venue for English club rugby this season, with Gloucester facing Leicester Tigers at the iconic Premier League ground on Saturday, March 28. Saracens will again play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while Bristol will return to Cardiff's Principality Stadium after debuting there last term. After beating Leicester in last season's final and sealing an historic treble, Bath will be favourites to seal the league title for a second straight season. Simon Massie-Taylor, chief executive of PREM Rugby, said: 'We are incredibly excited for the return of the Gallagher PREM and fans have plenty to look forward to with a number of appetising new additions to the fixture list for 2025/26. 'Kicking off the campaign with a Thursday night opener brings a fresh twist to our traditional curtain-raiser. Marquee fixtures remain a key pillar of our strategy to broaden rugby's reach. 'We're thrilled to see Villa Park host The Slater Cup for the first time and to witness the continued growth of Bristol Bears' Big Day Out in its second year. Last season was a landmark one. 'Viewership on TNT Sports rose by 28 per cent, attendances continued their upward trend and the league has never been more competitive as we saw a sixth different champion in six years, with Bath edging Leicester. 'Now with the official launch of the new look Gallagher PREM, the 2025/26 season marks the beginning of a groundbreaking and transformative new era for the sport.'
