How Selling European Models Could Revive Nissan In North America
While Nissan's efforts to refresh and revitalize its lineup haven't gone unnoticed, it's also been glaringly obvious that the brand's product portfolio has a few notable gaps. Buyers and Nissan dealers alike have been urging Nissan to revive the iconic Xterra - a rugged off-roader SUV that once shared its platform with the Frontier pickup truck and competed directly with the Toyota 4Runner. As these overland-ready off-roaders have grown in popularity immensely, it seems like a major missed opportunity for Nissan, especially considering the fact that the Frontier itself received a major update not too long ago.
However, I don't think the gaps in Nissan's lineup begin and end with the Xterra, and in fact, it seems there's an entire selection of models that Nissan could offer North American buyers, but simply doesn't. I'm referring to European models, such as those from Renault, Dacia, and even Alpine, which have achieved sales success and critical acclaim across the pond. I can't help but wonder why Nissan doesn't offer European models from its partner companies, which are sure to be popular with American audiences.
Using generative text-to-image artificial intelligence, we take an imagined look at what rebadged models from Renault, Dacia, and Alpine could look like rebranded as Nissans for the North American market. These images are purely for speculative and entertainment purposes and in no way reflect any actual Nissan, Renault, Dacia, or Alpine products.
Affordable yet rugged crossovers are all the rage right now–just look at Subaru's Wilderness models, Honda's Trailsport editions, and Toyota's TRD Pro versions. Even Nissan is chasing the rugged lifestyle buyers with its Rock Creek Editions and Pro 4X models, and bringing the venerable Dacia Duster stateside with a set of Nissan badges and an updated fascia could make the allure of a tough, utilitarian crossover more accessible to the market. In the United Kingdom, the Dacia Duster has a starting MSRP of just £19,380 (around $26,000 when converted to $USD), meaning Nissan could potentially offer a 130-horsepower mild-hybrid crossover with optional four-wheel drive to American buyers for under $30,000. If that sort of offer couldn't resonate with American buyers, I don't know what would.
Additionally, Nissan could offer the Dacia's upgraded, full-hybrid power plant–the turbocharged 1.6-liter "Hybrid 140" powertrain, which delivers a combined total of 140 horsepower and around 150 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. A Nissan-branded Dacia Duster could offer a rugged rival to the popular Subaru Crosstrek, albeit with mild-hybrid and full-hybrid powertrain options.
Before the Rogue became the hot commodity it is today, Nissan sold the X-Trail–a boxy, camping-friendly crossover–all over the globe. It was even sold in North America, and was hugely popular in Canada and Mexico, but Nissan decided not to sell it in the USA for some reason. These days, the global Nissan X-Trail is really just the Nissan Rogue that we see (quite constantly) roaming the streets here at home, but I think there's still a market in North America for the type of vehicle that the X-Trail once was.
Offering boxier proportions and a more rugged four-wheel drive system, the Dacia Bigster-based Nissan X-Trail could be to the Nissan Rogue what the Ford Bronco Sport is to the Escape, or perhaps what the Mazda CX-50 is to the CX-5. Available with either a 140-horsepower turbocharged 1.2-liter three cylinder, or a 155-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, the Dacia Bigster's mechanical guts might win over American buyers left untouched, but I think a more powerful beating heart, such as the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo three-cylinder found in the current Rogue (which makes a stout 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque), would be a much more suitable motor.
For years, we've begged Alpine to bring the glorious, turbocharged, mid-engine sport coupe to American roads. Unfortunately, we've yet to see it bless our shores, but maybe Nissan could change that. Now might be the perfect time to do so, considering that Toyota is seriously considering reviving the MR2, and Porsche is converting its Cayman and Boxster models to fully electric powertrains, which will inevitably alienate many of their loyal buyers. A Nissan-branded Alpine A110 in North America could help fill the gap in this desirable segment, putting itself up against the likes of the Lotus Emira and a potentially upcoming Toyota MR2 using its 296-horsepower turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder, mounted behind the cabin, and paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and rear-wheel drive.
Adding the A110 to Nissan's American lineup might not make for a superstar sales success, but it would certainly liven up the image of a brand that was once a champion of fun, affordable sports cars. Perhaps, too, we could see the return of fan favorites like the Nissan Silvia, the Stagea 260RS wagon, and the Pulsar GTI-R.
While Nissan dares to think outside of the box to get things back on track, perhaps also thinking inside the box might provide some much-needed help. Rebranding European products from the same brand umbrella is a strategy for automakers that seems as old as time itself, from General Motors selling Opels as Buicks and Saturns in the 2000s to Ford replacing the hot-selling Escape with the European-styled Ford Kuga. I'm rooting for Nissan, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the brand goes about turning things around and returning to profitability, but it'll be a long and winding road to get there. And hey, there's not much else you could ask for on a long and windy road than a mid-engine Alpine A110 ;).

Florida Car Salesman Goes on Test Drive. Then He Gets $160 Ticket Because the Officer Doesn't Understand Magnets
Composite liftgates may be a design win for automakers, but for car dealers using magnetic tags during test drives, they're becoming a legal liability. A recent TikTok shows just how quickly the consequences can stack up when enforcement meets modern materials. Florida-based creator RobbTheCarGuy (@robbthecarguy) starts off the viral clip in a highly agitated state after receiving a $160 ticket for not displaying his magnetized dealer plate properly on a test drive. Robb details how a routine test drive turned into an unexpected confrontation with law enforcement. He says that while road-testing a Nissan Rogue, he was pulled over by a police officer who claimed the vehicle had no visible license plate. Robb tried to explain that the car was in the middle of dealer preparation and his magnet-mounted temporary tag was secured to the driver-side rear panel, which was the only surface with metal, since the vehicle's liftgate was entirely composite plastic. According to the TikToker's account, the officer was unmoved by the explanation and asked Robb why he didn't affix the magnetized plate to the windshield. The officer then tested whether the magnetic plate would stick to the glass, leaving Robb in shock. Then, frustrated that the tag did not adhere to the glass, the officer announced he was giving Robb a ticket. 'I get the ticket,' Robb says. 'Then, the guy tells me, 'Listen, you can't leave this parking lot until that tag is secured to the vehicle.' Bro, my shop is across the street. You could see it from here, and he waited till I unscrewed it, went inside, [and] bought some screws to screw it into the back.' Temporary Tag Placement Rules Laws around temporary or dealer-issued tags vary by state, but most have a few things in common: Clearly visible from the rear of the vehicle. Securely affixed in the standard license plate location —often defined as the space where a permanent plate would typically be mounted. Protected from obstruction or detachment , meaning resting loosely in the window, placed inside the vehicle, or affixed with insufficient strength, may be grounds for citation. In Florida, where Robb is based, the statutes are relatively straightforward. According to Florida Statute 320.131 , a temporary tag must be 'firmly attached to the rear of the vehicle in the location where a permanent license plate is normally affixed.' That language leaves little room for improvisation, which Robb learned the hard way. Other states use similar language. For instance, California requires temporary dealer plates to be 'securely attached to the rear of the vehicle in the place provided.' Most laws do not account for edge cases created by modern vehicle design. Many late-model vehicles, including SUVs and crossovers, now use composite liftgates or plastic rear panels, which do not support magnetized plates. But in the eyes of the law, material limitations are not considered valid exemptions. If a tag cannot be magnetically affixed to the designated area, drivers are still legally responsible for securing it with screws, adhesive mounts, or other compliant methods. Failure to comply can result in fines typically ranging from $100 to $200, and in some jurisdictions, officers have the discretion to bar further operation of the vehicle until the tag is mounted correctly. That includes demanding on-the-spot corrections, even if it means an impromptu trip to the hardware store. Why So Many Cars No Longer Have Metal Liftgates Automakers have increasingly shifted toward plastic or composite rear liftgates and panels to reduce weight and improve fuel economy. The 2014-present Nissan Rogue models, for example, often use composite materials on the rear hatch—a design choice that prevents magnetic tags from attaching. This trend isn't exclusive to Nissan. Industry reports show the trend toward the use of lightweight, non-metallic body materials has surged in recent years as original equipment manufacturers balance fuel efficiency regulations and production costs. These gains come with unintended consequences, like nowhere to put a magnetic tag on a test drive. If you're test-driving or selling a vehicle with a non-metallic liftgate, here are a few legal and practical ways to comply with display laws: Buy a suction-cup license plate holder designed for plastic bumpers and glass windows. Use adhesive-backed or Velcro tag mounts. There are also commercial adhesive tag brackets that stick to glass or smooth bumpers without screws. Invest in dealer-specific tag frames. Some dealers use clip-on mounts or frame kits designed for temporary use. The Auto Dealer Supply Store offers compliant kits for modern test-drive setups. Avoid dashboards or interior mounting, unless state-approved. Motor1 reached out to Robb via direct message. Canada Goose monitors US trade policy as revenue improves
This story was originally published on Retail Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Retail Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Canada Goose's first quarter net revenue increased 22.4% year over year to 107.8 million Canadian dollars (about $78 million at the time of publishing), per a company press release Thursday. The apparel brand's direct-to-consumer revenue jumped about 24% and wholesale grew 12%. While gross profit improved about 26% to CA$66.2 million, Canada Goose's operating loss grew nearly 64% to CA$158.7 million and net loss increased 70% to CA$125.5 million. The company did not provide forward-looking guidance. 'As we see, anything can happen at any day,' CFO Neil Bowden said on a call with analysts Thursday. 'So we're maintaining a bit of prudence around what the outlook is for the year.' Dive Insight: As the state of U.S. and Canadian trade policies continues to fluctuate, Canada Goose is steadfast in monitoring the situation. 'We continue to monitor the ongoing developments as it relates to potential new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods as well as potential second-order impacts on the consumer,' Bowden remarked on the call. The executive reiterated that about 75% of the brand's inventory is manufactured in Canada and 'virtually all comply with the USMCA requirements, making them currently exempt from tariffs.' From a regional perspective, Canada Goose's North American revenue was up 27% in Q1 led by DTC growth. Bowden noted that stores 'led the way with double-digit DTC comp sales growth each month in the quarter.' The brand is traditionally known for its cold-weather, high-end apparel, but it's been on a journey to expand past that reputation. In its press release Thursday, Canada Goose highlighted the release of its second Snow Goose capsule collection that featured a campaign set in the summery deserts of Utah. The latest release under creative director Haider Ackermann emphasized lightweight fabrics to reimagine classic styles from the brand. 'Newness is a new theme underpinned by the new Creative Director, Haider Ackermann, (appointed on May 2024), and we think the time is right for marketing spend in conjunction with faster and more relevant as well as lifestyle product flows,' TD Cowen analysts said in a note shared with Retail Dive on Friday. Nonheavyweight product is key to improving sales productivity and competing with top-tier luxury brands, the analysts added. The sentiment is shared by Canada Goose executives. 'When you look at the apparel growth that we've seen, we're a brand that is known for warmth,' Brand and Commercial President Carrie Baker said on the call with analysts. 'And outside of winter, we're just really not known as that brand, but this campaign, the collection really challenge that perception and people responded to it.'
