Arunachal preps for crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, to set up task forces in districts
Acting on directives issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the State has instructed all districts to immediately constitute district task forces (DTFs) to identify undocumented immigrants and ensure strict enforcement of Inner Line Permit (ILP) provisions.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Advisor to Home Minister Mutchu Mithi and DGP Anand Mohan on Wednesday (June 4, 2025).
The meeting was attended by senior police officers, including Inspector Generals and Superintendents of Police.
"Statewide crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and ILP violations. A district task force will be immediately constituted in every district to carry out detection of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and ensure strict enforcement of the Inner Line Permit regime," Mr. Mithi said.
The MHA had last month issued a 30-day deadline for all States and Union Territories to verify the identity and documentation of individuals suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Those failing to produce valid documents would be liable for deportation, officials said.
It also instructed States to invoke their statutory powers to detect, detain and deport illegal immigrants.
Similar instructions were issued to the Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Rifles, which guard India's borders with the two countries.

Clarify If Detained Migrant Workers From Bengal: Court Asks Delhi Government
Kolkata: Taking up two habeas corpus petitions alleging illegal detention of migrant workers from West Bengal in Delhi, the Calcutta High Court Friday directed the administration in the northern state to clarify whether they are under detention. The petitioners, who are relatives of those allegedly detained, also sought direction to the authorities concerned for their release and production before the court. It was claimed in the two petitions that Sweety Bibi, Kurban Sheikh, their minor son, Sunali Khatun, Danish and his minor grandson have been illegally detained in New Delhi. The advocate appearing for the petitioners submitted that Bengali-speaking people have been detained in Delhi on suspicion that they are Bangladeshi citizens and that the officials did not even cross-check their identities. "In view of the nature of allegations made, prima facie, we are of the opinion that the writ petition is maintainable and this court cannot be a silent spectator," the division bench presided by Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty said. The division bench, also comprising Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra, directed the Delhi government to place before it relevant documents on whether the two had been detained or were missing. The Delhi government was also directed to answer if the "detention" was in connection with the order of any court and the grounds for that. The high court also asked the Delhi government to inform it whether they had been detained after informing them of the grounds. The administration of Delhi was also asked whether their detention was related to any investigation being conducted by the police authorities or state officials. It was also asked to answer whether there was any correspondence between the governments of the two states in this regard. The bench directed the West Bengal chief secretary to coordinate with his counterpart of the national capital territory of Delhi for compliance of the order. The court fixed July 16 as the next date of hearing. Lawyers representing the West Bengal government submitted that necessary steps are being taken by the state authorities to avail instructions from the Delhi administration. The Calcutta High Court passed similar orders on the Odisha government on Thursday over allegations that two migrant workers from West Bengal were under illegal detention in the neighbouring state. It directed the Odisha government to clarify whether migrant workers Sainur Islam and Rakibul Islam are under detention by the Odisha Police in Jagatsinghpur district of the neighbouring state. Two habeas corpus petitions were moved before the high court seeking their immediate release and production before it. This matter will come up for further hearing on July 14.

Tenure of Union home secretary extended by 1 yr
New Delhi The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet(ACC) Friday approved extension in services of union home secretary Govind Mohan for another year, an order issued by the department said. Mohan, a 1989 officer of the Sikkim cadre, was set to retire on September 30, 2025. Govind Mohan has earlier worked as joint secretary (in 2018) and as additional secretary (from 2018 to 2021) in the ministry of home affairs (MHA). (HT PHOTO) The ACC order said, 'The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in services of Shri Govind Mohan, IAS(SK:1989) as home secretary, ministry of Home Affairs beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. 30.9.2025 upto 22.08.2026 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in terms of the provisions of FR 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services(Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958). The ACC is composed of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah. The senior IAS officer had taken charge as the home secretary on August 22, 2024 in place of then home secretary Ajay Bhalla, who was later appointed Manipur governor. Bhalla was the country's top bureau for nearly 5 years and was given four extensions of one year each before retiring last year. Mohan has earlier worked as joint secretary (in 2018) and as additional secretary (from 2018 to 2021) in the ministry of home affairs (MHA). A native of Uttar Pradesh, he was posted as culture secretary too. Even as the government has extended the home secretary's tenure, there is no clarity over the appointment of the new Delhi police commissioner. The current commissioner, Sanjay Arora is set to retire later this month. Arora, a Tamil Nadu cadre IPS, was the second consecutive officer from another cadre who was brought to head the Delhi police in August 2022. The government is yet to announce if Arora too will be given an extension, another officer from a non-AGMUT cadre will be appointed as the city's new top cop, or it will be someone from the AGMUT cadre itself. AGMUT stands for Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and union territories cadre.

22 Naxals lay down arms in Chhattisgarh
Narayanpur: As many as 22 Naxalites, who were active in the Abhujmad area and carrying collective rewards of Rs 37.5 lakh, surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on Friday, a senior police official said. The cadres, belonging to Kutul, Nelnar and Indravati area committees under the Maad division of Maoists, turned themselves in before senior police, Border Security Force (BSF) and Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officials here. The surrendered Naxalites told the police that they were disappointed with the 'hollow' Maoist ideology and growing internal differences within the banned outfit, Narayanpur Superintendent of Police Robinson Guria said. They were also influenced by the development work being carried out in the Maad area in the district, including rapid construction of roads, and wanted to lead a normal life, he said. Of the Naxalites who gave up arms, Manku Kunjam (33), a divisional committee member, carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh, while three area committee members, identified as Hidme Kunjam (28), Punna Lal alias Boti (26) and Saniram Korram (25), carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh each, the official said.
