Kim Woo-min wins bronze in men's 400m freestyle at worlds
Kim clocked 3:42.60 in the 400m freestyle final at the World Aquatics Championships Arena in Singapore, finishing 0.25 second behind the gold medalist, Lukas Martens of Germany (3:42.35).
Kim had won his first career world title at last year's competition in Doha.
Samuel Short of Australia, the 2023 world champion, finished with the silver medal this time at 3:42.37.
Short, Martens and Kim had ranked 1-2-3 in the heats held earlier Sunday.
Swimming in Lane 3, Kim had the fastest reaction time at 0.61 second, while Martens, the world record holder, was tied for the slowest off the blocks at 0.70 second.
But the German swimmer hit the 100m mark first at 51.95 seconds, with Kim trailing him in third place at 52.77. Short was sandwiched between the two at 52.46.
And it stayed Martens-Short-Kim at the halfway point. Short was briefly in the lead at the 300m mark, but Martens nipped him by 0.02 second at the finish.
Of the three medalists, Kim had the fastest split over the final 50m at 27.62 seconds, but it wasn't enough to help him get to the top of the podium for the second straight year.
Kim, 23, has joined Park Tae-hwan as the only South Korean swimmers to win multiple world championships medals in the men's 400m freestyle. Park won gold medals in 2007 and 2011.
Park still owns the national record with 3:41.53. Kim's personal best is 3:42.42. (Yonhap)

KBO-leading Hanwha Eagles acquire all-time hits king Son Ah-seop
The best team in South Korean baseball this season acquired the league's all-time hits leader Thursday. The Hanwha Eagles said they traded for NC Dinos outfielder Son Ah-seop in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) draft and 300 million won ($215,000) in cash. The deal came on the annual trade deadline. The Eagles entered Thursday's action leading the KBO with a win-loss-tie record of 58-37-3, poised for their first postseason trip since 2018. Son, 37, will be asked to strengthen the offense that ranks in the middle of the pack in runs, hits and on-base plus slugging (OPS). Son sits atop the career hits rankings with 2,583 after 2,134 games. He is a lifetime .320 hitter and is batting .300 this season in 76 games, along with 33 RBIs. Son enjoyed a streak of 14 consecutive seasons with at least 100 hits from 2010 to 2023, before the run ended in an injury-plagued 2024 season, when he finished with 95 hits in 84 games. Son had been with the Dinos since 2022, after spending the 14 previous seasons with the Lotte Giants. The Eagles noted that Son has a career postseason OPS of 1.008 and his big-game experience should help the club if they make the postseason. "He has been a consistent force throughout his career with his great work ethic and discipline," the Eagles said. "We expect him to serve as an exemplary role model for our young players." The Dinos are also in the postseason hunt. They ranked eighth at 44-45-5 but were only one game out of the fifth and final postseason spot prior to Thursday's games. Dinos general manager Lim Sun-nam said getting a draft pick in exchange for Son was "a strategic decision" to solidify the team's prospect base. "It was not an easy call to send away Son Ah-seop, who has been a key part of our team," Lim added. "But we wanted to ensure our competitiveness for the future, and this move will help lay foundation for our retooling and sustainable growth." (Yonhap)

Yamal, Lewandowski starting Barca's preseason match in Seoul
Teen sensation Lamine Yamal and seasoned veteran Robert Lewandowski will start for FC Barcelona in their preseason match in Seoul on Thursday. Head coach Hans Flick lived up to his word after declaring Wednesday that Yamal, the Spanish club's new No. 10, will play against FC Seoul of the K League 1 at Seoul World Cup Stadium in the South Korean capital. Yamal is widely regarded as the next big thing in international football at age 18. He netted 18 goals in 55 matches in all competitions last season, as Barca accomplished a domestic treble with the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey title and the Spanish Super Cup title. Yamal was recently awarded No. 10, an iconic numeral previously won by club legend Lionel Messi. Lewandowski showed no signs of slowing down last season at age 36, leading his club with 27 goals in league play. The star-studded starting lineup will also include Brazilian star Raphinha, considered a serious contender for the Ballon d'Or award as the world's top player, and Spanish midfielder Pedri, who led Barca with 35 starts in La Liga last season. Veteran Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo will serve as captain at the start. Former Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, recently loaned to Barcelona, will start the match on the bench. Jesse Lingard, Rashford's ex-Man United teammate currently with FC Seoul, will start for the K League 1 club as captain. He will be joined by other regulars, such as Jordanian defender Yazan Al-Arab, veteran left back Kim Jin-su and national team attacker Moon Seon-min. Defender Kim Ju-sung was kept off the squad list, hours after FC Seoul had announced he was joining Sanfrecce Hiroshima of the top Japanese league, J1 League. Kim, 24, made his K League debut with FC Seoul in 2019. Save for a two-year stint with the military club Gimcheon Sangmu FC, Kim has spent his entire club career with FC Seoul. This is the first of two preseason matches for FC Barcelona in South Korea during their visit here in 15 years. After this match, FC Barcelona will travel southeast to take on Daegu FC, another K League 1 club, at Daegu Stadium in Daegu at 8 p.m. Monday. (Yonhap)

Hwang Sun-woo finishes 4th in men's 200m freestyle at swimming worlds
South Korean swimmer Hwang Sun-woo finished fourth in the men's 200-meter freestyle at the world championships in Singapore on Tuesday, coming up short of his fourth consecutive medal in his main event. Hwang hit the pad in 1:44.72 to miss out on the podium at the World Aquatics Championships at the World Aquatics Championships Arena in Singapore. David Popovici of Romania, the 2022 champ, won his second career world title in 1:43.53, and Luke Hobson of the United States took the silver in 1:43.84. Tatsuya Murasa, an 18-year-old from Japan, beat Hwang for the bronze medal by clocking 1:44.54. Hwang, swimming in Lane 5 as the second-fastest qualifier from the semifinals, had the second-fastest reaction time with 0.62 second, just behind Murasa's 0.60. At the halfway point, Hobson was in the lead at 50.07 seconds, followed by Popovici (50.58) and Hwang (50.76). Murasa, who touched the 100m mark in 51.07 seconds, moved ahead of Hwang at the 150m mark and then covered the final 50m in 26.66 seconds to hold off the South Korean by 0.18 at the end. Hwang came home in 26.83 seconds, but his split for the 100m-150m stretch was even worse at 27.13 seconds -- the second-slowest time among the eight finalists. Hwang arrived in Singapore as the only South Korean swimmer to win an individual medal at three consecutive world championships, and that streak ended Tuesday. Hwang won the 200m freestyle silver in 2022 in Budapest and followed that up with bronze in the same event a year later in Fukuoka, Japan. Last year, Hwang soared to his first career world title in Doha but failed to defend that crown Tuesday. Hwang was seeking a measure of personal redemption in Singapore. This is Hwang's first international competition since he missed out on the 200m freestyle final at the Paris Olympics last summer. As the reigning world champion, Hwang went into Paris as a strong medal contender in the 200m freestyle, but he crashed out of the semifinals. Hwang will now join Kim Woo-min, Lee Ho-joon and Kim Young-beom in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay Friday. Hwang, Lee, Kim Woo-min and Yang Jae-hoon won silver in this relay event last year for South Korea's first-ever world championships medal in a relay. (Yonhap)
