Peter Rice to oversee opening and closing ceremonies for 2028 LA Olympics and Paralympics
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The former chairman of Walt Disney Television and head of 21st Century Fox has been hired to oversee the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics. LA28 organizers said Wednesday that Peter Rice will serve as head of ceremonies and content and be responsible for the creative vision and physical production of the LA28 Games, which run July 14-30, and the Paralympics, which run Aug. 15-27. 'Peter is one of the rare individuals whose expertise seamlessly combines creativity, operational insight and production excellence to deliver Ceremonies that will captivate audiences around the world,' said LA28 president and chairperson Casey Wasserman, who will supervise Rice. 'He's been a leading figure in shaping the modern television and film landscape and is the perfect asset to reimagining the delivery of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the digital age, leaving a legacy well beyond the Games.' The opening ceremony be held July 14 at 8 p.m. ET, with events at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The closing ceremony will be July 30 at 9 p.m. ET at the Coliseum. 'I look forward to delivering Ceremonies that honor the legacy of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and celebrate the cutting-edge future of the 2028 Stadium," Rice said. "These venues have hosted some of the most legendary moments in sports history, and I'm thrilled to deliver a powerful artistic experience that adds a new chapter to LA's Olympic and Paralympic story.' Rice, a British-American, began his career at 20th Century Fox in 1989, rising through the ranks before being promoted to president of 21st Century Fox in 2017. Following Disney's acquisition of the company, Rice became chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of General Entertainment for The Walt Disney Co.

Doctor pleads guilty to selling Matthew Perry ketamine weeks before the ‘Friends' star's overdose death
LOS ANGELES — A doctor pleaded guilty Wednesday to giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the month leading up to the 'Friends' star's overdose death. Dr. Salvador Plasencia became the fourth of the five people charged in connection with Perry's death to plead guilty. He stood next to his lawyer and admitted guilt to four counts to Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett in federal court in Los Angeles. Plasencia, 43, was to have gone on trial in August until the doctor agreed last month to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, according to the signed document filed in federal court in Los Angeles. When asked if his lawyers had considered all the possibilities of pleas and sentencing in the case, Plasencia replied, 'They've considered everything.' Advertisement He had previously pleaded not guilty, but in exchange for the guilty pleas, prosecutors have agreed to drop three additional counts of distribution of ketamine and two counts of falsifying records. Prosecutors outlined the charges in court before the plea, and said, as Plasencia's lawyers have emphasized, that he did not sell Perry the dose that killed the actor. The charges can carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, and there is no guarantee Plasencia will get less, but he's likely to. He has been free on bond since shortly after his arrest in August, and will be allowed to remain free until his Dec. 3 sentencing. Plasencia left the courthouse with his lawyers without speaking to reporters gathered outside. The only remaining defendant who has not reached an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office is Jasveen Sangha, who prosecutors allege is a drug dealer known as the 'Ketamine Queen' and sold Perry the lethal dose. According to a co-defendant, Plasencia in a text message called the actor a 'moron' who could be exploited for money. Perry's personal assistant, his friend, and another doctor all agreed to plead guilty last year in exchange for their cooperation as the government sought to make their case against larger targets, Plasencia and Sangha. None have been sentenced yet. Perry was found dead by the assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. Perry, 54, began seeking more ketamine than his doctor would give him. Plasencia admitted in his plea agreement that another patient connected him with Perry, and that starting about a month before Perry's death, he illegally supplied the actor with 20 vials of ketamine totaling 100 mg of the drug, along with ketamine lozenges and syringes. Perry struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his time on 'Friends,' when he became one of the biggest stars of his generation as Chandler Bing. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 on NBC's megahit.

Birmingham mourns the death of native son Ozzy Osbourne
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Ozzy Osbourne's fans had sensed the end was near. At his final show just a few weeks ago, admirers watched the heavy metal icon perform while seated on a black throne and knew it would likely be the last time they saw the lead singer of Black Sabbath . He died Tuesday at age 76. So there was little surprise Wednesday as they made pilgrimages to sites around Birmingham, the city in central England where Osbourne grew up and the band was formed. Outside the Crown Pub, where Black Sabbath played its first gig, Daria DeBuono, 59, and Stephen Voland, 32, both from New York, described the bond the rockstar had with his fans during that farewell show at the city's Villa Park stadium. Even though he stayed seated throughout, the man nicknamed the Prince of Darkness reveled in the embrace of the crowd, they said. 'It's like that is what he was living for, that is what he was keeping himself alive for, was to have that final glorious moment of love,' DeBuono said. 'And being in the crowd you can just feel the love in the arena that day. It was just very emotional.' Voland completed her thought. 'When I was watching the show I told her, 'This is like a living memorial that he gets to enjoy,'' he said. 'All this hard work and everyone is here for him. I just felt like it was a cool thing not knowing that this was happening very soon after.' The original members of Black Sabbath reunited for the first time in 20 years on July 5 for what Osbourne said would be his final concert. Osbourne had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019. 'Let the madness begin!' he told the 42,000 fans packed into Villa Park as the show got underway. On Wednesday, Birmingham sites linked to Black Sabbath became magnets for fans of the band's front man, who built a second career as a star of the reality TV show 'The Osbournes.' They gathered around the bull in Birmingham New Street station, which was created for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and is known as Ozzy. And they trooped to a mural on Navigation Street that was painted in honor of Black Sabbath's farewell concert. 'He's one of us,' West Midlands region Mayor Richard Parker said at the mural. 'There is an enormous amount of pride — he was forged by this place and he put this place on the map, and everyone could relate to him.' But the biggest draw was the Black Sabbath bench, where fans can take selfies alongside life-size images of the four band members. The bench, which was unveiled on the Broad Street canal bridge in 2019, has been surrounded by tributes to Osbourne. 'I think it is so beautiful that he got to finish and do his wish before he finally passed,' said Matthew Caldwell, 36, of Stourbridge, just west of Birmingham. 'Very sad but incredible.'
