Is supermarket fashion the new high street?
DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:
The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, as you head in to do your weekly food shop you can also pick up a selection of purse-friendly, stylish pieces for all the family.
Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent increase in the quarter thanks to a 'strong growth in clothing' and M&S has earnt the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.
Asda's clothing line George has made £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury's clothes sold at full price rather than discounted and Nutmeg at Morrisons sales are also up 2 per cent in the past year.
So what is it about supermarket fashion that is becoming so successful?
Apart from the clothing actually being affordable, it's good quality too - with many being part of schemes such as the Better Cotton Initiative.
A lot of the time they keep to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year.
Plus because they buy so much stock they can turn around pieces quickly and buy for cheaper because of the volumes.
There's even a stunning

Reasons to shop supermarket fashion
When looking for new pieces to add to your seasonal wardrobe, or update your basics, there's no need to spend hours walking around clothes shops, or scrolling online. Just pick up a dress or two alongside your fruit and veg...
They're convenient
- Chances are you visit your supermarket more times than a shopping centre or high street.
It's affordable
- For basics to more fashion-led pieces, supermarkets are leading the way for budget fashion that doesn't look cheap.
They're more on-trend that you think
- With a customer database larger than the average high street store, shops like ASDA, Sainsbury's and Tesco are able to cater to the markets and predict trends in a lot more areas than just food supply.
They fit well
- Fits and lengths often come with a little more modesty in mind. Fabrics are often highly practical too—think plenty of 100% cotton that can be thrown into the washing machine without thought.

CBB's Stephen Bear marries Brazilian girlfriend, 18, after prison release
Convicted sex offender Stephen Bear, 35, has tied the knot with his 18-year-old Brazilian girlfriend, Miami, and took to Instagram to flaunt a series of snaps from their wedding. It comes just a year-and-a-half after Bear was released from prison, where he served time for circulating a sex tape featuring his ex and Love Island celeb Georgia Harrison. For the big day, Bear suited up in pink and shared an Instagram snap with his new wife, captioning it: "MY WEDDING. MR AND MRS BEAR." The former Celebrity Big Brother champ sported 'Noivo' sunglasses post-ceremony – that's Portuguese for groom – and was spotted in a video lifting his bride, who was dressed in a white lace dress, and crooning a heartfelt version of 'I Love You Baby' to the young South American native. Earlier this year, Stephen relocated to Brazil, around the same time his ex, Georgia Harrison, was honoured with an MBE during the King's Birthday Honours for her activism against violence towards women. Georgia, currently expecting her first child, earned recognition for her efforts to highlight revenge porn, consent issues, and online safety, reports the Mirror. She launched her campaign after Bear distributed explicit content of her on the internet without her permission or knowledge that she was being recorded. In the wake of the ordeal, Georgia courageously gave up her anonymity, aiming to support others facing similar violations. Bear was sentenced to 21 months behind bars in March 2023 after a jury found him guilty of voyeurism by a majority decision and unanimously guilty on two counts of disclosing private sexual photos and videos with intent to cause distress. At the sentencing, the former Celebrity Big Brother star received a restraining order prohibiting any contact with Georgia for five years and was also required to register as a sex offender. After serving only half his sentence, Bear walked free in January 2024. Come March 2024, he was slapped with a £22,305 fine meant for HM Treasury to benefit police charities, plus an additional £5,000 in compensation to Georgia for emotional and financial harm. Earlier this year, Bear mocked the authorities by sharing a video from Brazil alongside his new 18-year-old girlfriend. Bear boasted in the clip: "The police can't catch me now," adding, "Life's good. I thought I'd come on here guys and say I love you all, simple as that. I love you all. Stay true, because this year I'm fully active, I'm off-licence. The police, they could still be after me, but I'm in Brazil. They can't catch me now. Catch me if you can."
