Giants star Malik Nabers describes memorable moment vs. Commanders

Yahooa day ago
Every rookie has a "Welcome to the NFL" moment. For New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers, that moment came in last season's Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders. While most will remember the game for the Commanders' victory, achieved by kicking seven field goals and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels securing his first NFL win, Nabers had a critical drop in the game that could have clinched the win for New York.
Despite the drop, Nabers had a phenomenal game, catching 10 passes for 127 yards and his first NFL touchdown. The Commanders had no answer for Nabers.

So, when did Nabers arrive at his "Welcome to the NFL" moment? It came courtesy of Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu.
"I ran like a shallow (cross), it was like third and 4, I think, third and 5, I ran the shallow, I caught the ball and I was going up the field on the right sideline, and one of the linebackers he came and hit me," Nabers told Dale Earnhardt Jr., in an episode of "Taking Laps with Dale Jr."
"I seen him (Luvu) in my peripheral, but it's like I thought he was farther than what I expected. So I'm cutting, I'm telling (tight end) Theo (Johnson), 'block the corner that's right there,' and I'm going to try to cut backside because the dude's not going to catch me.........It's like he just magically just appeared right there. He smacked me, I ain't gonna lie. It looked harder than what it seemed. He hit me, I popped right up, and I was like 'OK, alright, now I'm in the league.'"

Courtesy of Nate on X, we have the play, just as Nabers described.
Nabers would have a terrific rookie season even if the Giants struggled. However, he was overshadowed by Daniels, his best friend and college quarterback at LSU. Daniels was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Nabers finished fifth behind Daniels, Raiders TE Brock Bowers, Broncos QB, and Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. (Daniels and Nabers' teammate at LSU).

'Heartbroken' Texans pledge $500K to aid Texas Hill Country communities after devastating floods

The Houston Texans announced on Saturday that the organization is donating $500,000 to help support those affected by the devastating floods that hit the Texas Hill Country this week. "We are heartbroken by the loss and damage that our neighbors in the Texas Hill Country have endured. We are especially devastated to hear about the children who are still missing and we are praying they are reunited with their families soon. Our hearts will remain with everyone affected and in addition to our donation, we will continue to support the search, rescue and recovery efforts in the coming weeks." A storm swept through the area, killing at least 27 people, including nine children. Officials said that 23 to 25 girls from a summer camp in Hunt, Texas were still unaccounted for and that approximately 850 people have been rescued so far. Advertisement 'The camp was completely destroyed,' said 13-year-old Elinor Lester, who was one of the campers at Camp Mystic. 'A helicopter landed and started taking people away. It was really scary.' Fast-moving waters rose to 26 feet along the Guadalupe River in less than an hour on Friday morning. Heavy rains are forecasted for Saturday with flash flood warnings and watches remaining in effect for parts of central Texas. Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, who spent the first nine seasons of his MLB career with the Houston Astros, has posted several times on X since Friday with photos and contact information for those still missing.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is unhappy with Bucks after Damian Lillard waiver, Brook Lopez departure: "He just didn't like how it was handled"

Giannis Antetokounmpo is unhappy with Bucks after Damian Lillard waiver, Brook Lopez departure: "He just didn't like how it was handled" originally appeared on Basketball Network. The Milwaukee Bucks' sudden decision to waive Damian Lillard and let Brook Lopez walk in free agency hasn't sat well with Giannis Antetokounmpo. According to Chris Haynes, 'The Greek Freak' has taken issue with how the situation was managed, a sentiment that could spell trouble for Milwaukee if tensions linger. Advertisement 'Sources have relayed to me that Giannis Antetokounmpo is not pleased with the Milwaukee Bucks' decision to buy out Damian Lillard for the remainder of his contract,' the NBA insider said on NBA TV. 'He just didn't like how it was handled. This whole offseason, since the season ended, he's been weighing his options and figuring out what he's gonna do, try to navigate the situation.' 'Now, this is one more thing added to the equation, in which he is seeing that there are some suspect things that are happening, or the way that they are happening. So I was told he was not pleased with how it transpired with Damian Lillard,' added Haynes. Lillard waived, Lopez out In a move that's entirely out of left field, the Bucks decided to waive Lillard and stretch the remaining $113 million in his contract across five years. Dame's two-season tenure in Milwaukee was largely disappointing, as the team was eliminated in the first round in the past two playoffs. Advertisement Moreover, the nine-time All-Star suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the series against the Indiana Pacers. The injury will sideline him for most, if not all, of next season. According to Shams Charania, Lillard is in good spirits following his release. ESPN's resident league insider wrote that Dame "welcomed" the move, as it gives him the freedom to rehab near his family in Portland and take his time weighing his next step. Meanwhile, Lopez has already found a new NBA home. The seven-foot big man joins the Los Angeles Clippers in a two-year, $18 million deal after being let go by the Bucks. Lopez had a magnificent seven-year run with the franchise, winning a title in 2021 and being a part of two All-Defensive Teams. Will fans see the "Splash Mountain" down the road in a jersey retirement ceremony? Apparently, Giannis thinks it's a no-brainer. Advertisement Bucks acquire Myles Turner With this sudden turn of events, Milwaukee's front office wasted no time pivoting. The Bucks quickly addressed a need by signing Myles Turner, the long-time Pacers center, to a four-year, $107 million deal. Turner could readily slot into Lopez's role as a defensive-minded, floor-spacing big. As per Shams, the Bucks wouldn't have had the means to secure Turner without letting go of Lillard. Even though the Bucks still owe Lillard about $22.5 million annually for the next five years starting in 2025-26, it's a far smaller cap hit than if his full salary remained on the books. Waiving 'Dame Time' saved them over half the amount that would've counted against the cap! Advertisement Only time will tell how Giannis processes everything. He could decide this was the final straw and demand a trade, setting off a frenzy across the league. Or he might stay, see if the front office can steady the ship, and ride it out one more year. Either way, Milwaukee is officially on the clock.
