Mohali mayor slams state govt, MLA over crippling finances, demands urgent relief

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu has launched a political attack on the Punjab government and local MLA Kulwant Singh, holding them responsible for the dire financial crisis facing the corporation. Despite the worsening economic condition of the civic body, Sidhu alleged that funds due to the Municipal Corporation from various government departments are being deliberately withheld. 'Over Rs 50 crore is pending from GMADA and PSPCL, and another Rs 7 crore in property tax arrears is stuck with different departments,' the mayor told The Indian Express. The mayor stated, 'We are struggling to even pay salaries to employees at times. Tenders for development projects get delayed, and payments for completed works are stuck.' Recalling better days, Sidhu noted, 'When Mohali was a council, it was classified as A-grade, whereas Kharar and Zirakpur were B and C-grade, respectively. But now, despite Mohali becoming a Municipal Corporation, those councils continue to function independently and are financially healthier.' He said that Kharar currently holds over Rs 400 crore, and Zirakpur has nearly Rs 700 crore in funds, while the Mohali MC is left cash-strapped. 'In Kharar and Zirakpur, property-related services like map approvals, transfers, and NOCs are still handled by their respective councils, which also collect the associated fees. But in Mohali, all these services are handled by GMADA, which sells land worth crores but doesn't even release the corporation's rightful share.' The mayor pointed out that GMADA alone owes the Mohali MC Rs 32 crore. Raising concerns over the deteriorating infrastructure, Sidhu warned, 'Mohali is facing multiple issues, the most critical being stormwater drainage. Solving this will require over Rs 200 crore.' He mentioned that he had written several letters to officials and even the Chief Minister, yet no action has been taken, nor has any special grant been issued for Mohali. 'For development works alone, Mohali needs a grant of at least Rs 500 crore,' he asserted. Sidhu said, 'If urgent steps are not taken to address Mohali's pressing problems, the city's condition will worsen drastically and for that, the Punjab government will be fully responsible.'

Collective efforts needed to ban single-use plastic: PCB chief

Kurnool: Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) Chairman and retired IAS officer Dr P Krishnaiah has called for a comprehensive and coordinated effort among all departments to ensure effective implementation of the single-use plastic ban across the district. Addressing a review meeting at the Kurnool Collectorate alongside district collector P Ranjith Basha, Dr Krishnaiah emphasised that the ban must be enforced in full by October 2. Dr Krishnaiah underlined the severe environmental threat posed by single-use plastics, urging officials to intensify enforcement particularly in densely populated urban areas such as municipal markets, hospitals, temples, shopping complexes, and public venues. He directed municipal commissioners and enforcement wings to initiate strict measures and promote alternatives such as cloth, jute and biodegradable bags. He also called on MEPMA and the Handlooms and Textiles Department to mobilise women's self-help groups for the production of eco-friendly alternatives. In alignment with the government's vision, Dr Krishnaiah recalled that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has been actively promoting the 'Swarnandhra – Swachhandhra' initiative through his regular participation in field-level activities every third Saturday of the month. 'The Chief Minister's involvement reflects the high priority the government places on cleanliness and environmental sustainability,' he noted, urging officials to treat the plastic ban as a flagship mission under the Chief Minister's agenda for a cleaner Andhra Pradesh. Collector P Ranjith Basha informed that awareness programmes have been underway since June 5 and that multi-department task force committees - comprising police, revenue, municipal, commercial tax, and APPCB officials - have been formed to monitor and enforce compliance. He confirmed that the district aims to achieve complete prohibition of single-use plastics by the October 2 deadline. The meeting was attended by APPCB EE Kishore Reddy, Kurnool Municipal Commissioner Vishwanath, Mining DD Ravichand, DSO Raghuveer, DPO Bhaskar, DTC Shanta Kumari, and other senior officials.

Chandigarh MC mulling policy to recover unpaid property tax from defaulters: Commissioner

Amid growing financial distress, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Chandigarh has begun working on a new policy to recover property tax dues from defaulters, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar said. The commissioner shared the development while responding to questions raised by councillor Mahesh Inder Singh Sidhu, who discussed a list of the top 20 property tax defaulters, which includes both government and private institutions, collectively owing unpaid property tax worth Rs 196 crore. Sidhu stressed that recovering even Rs 200 crore could substantially ease the civic body's financial strain and help resolve multiple civic issues. Kumar informed the councillors that a step-by-step approach is being adopted and that a formal recovery policy will be drafted within three months. The commissioner noted that the PGIMER has already paid Rs 12 crore, and efforts are underway to recover more dues. He also acknowledged that legal battles with institutions have slowed recovery, with many hiring senior lawyers. Sidhu suggested the MC's legal team may coordinate closely with senior standing counsels to strengthen the MC's legal arguments. Sidhu further questioned why Chandigarh has not received the grant it is entitled to under the Fourth Delhi Finance Commission, to which Kumar responded that a request under the Sixth Delhi Finance Commission has been sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Advertisement Tax and Labor Welfare Concerns Raised Sidhu also drew the House's attention to unbilled advertisements in Elante Mall and urged immediate calculation and issuance of tax notices. The Commissioner assured action would be taken in the city's interest.
