Maserati owner Stellantis has a new CEO starting today, and there's fresh speculation the company is looking to off-load the Italian brand as its sales continue to slide
According to Reuters, Stellantis – which owns Maserati among a swathe of brands including Alfa Romeo and Fiat – is still considering selling Maserati as new Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa officially starts as CEO today, June 23, 2025.
It comes as the automaker – which celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2024 – continues to deny rumours, with a Stellantis spokesperson telling Reuters, "Respectfully, Maserati is not for sale".
Maserati has been the worst performing brand of more than a dozen automakers in the Stellantis group, with a 57 per cent global sales decline in 2024 including a 40.9 per cent slide in Australia.

The sales slide saw Maserati post a financial loss of €260 million ($464 million) for 2024, and – unlike brands such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz – it doesn't have any new models set for launch this year to turn the brand around.
While the Grecale SUV was the best-selling Maserati in 2024, production of the Levante SUV and Quattroporte sedan ended, with their replacements not due until 2027 and 2028 respectively.
It also dropped the Ghibli sedan – a BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class competitor – and has no plans for a direct successor.
Reports of a potential sale surfaced under previous Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, who said Stellantis wouldn't offload any of its brands but then quit the company last December.
These remarks came after then-Stellantis chief financial officer Natalie Knight told media in July 2024: "There could be some point in the future when we look at what's the best home for [Maserati]".
Reports gathered steam in early 2025 after Maserati posted a further 48 per cent fall in sales over the first three months of 2025, with a 24.8 per cent decline in Australia over the same period.
Adding to the pressure, the April 2025 introduction of a 25 per cent United States (US) 'automotive' import tariff – and additional country-specific 'reciprocal' tariffs on top – saw Maserati's future on shaky ground.
The US is Maserati's biggest market, making up around half of its global sales, with the automaker importing every vehicle it sells there.
The pressure from the tariffs saw Stellantis hire consultancy firm McKinsey & Co to evaluate the impact the tariffs would have on Alfa Romeo and Maserati.
Unlike Maserati, Alfa Romeo has seen a strong start to 2025, with a 29 per cent global sales increase in the first quarter (January to March 2025), with the Alfa Romeo Junior – due to arrive in Australia during the third quarter of 2025 – leading the turnaround.
"Great credit to the Junior, welcomed with extreme enthusiasm," said Alfa Romeo CEO Santo Ficili in a statement.
"With 35,000 orders since launch, it is kicking off the brand's future, with the new Stelvio and new Giulia about to write yet another chapter in the history of Made in Italy."

From Bali to the Amalfi, travellers can enjoy food and drinks at private beach clubs, and in a surprising push from Queensland's sate premier, deck chairs and umbrellas could soon be rolled out on the Gold Coast. Premier David Crisafulli backed the idea for sections of the city's popular public beaches to be converted to its own Euro-style beach clubs. The call came as the premier spoke at the Future Gold Coast event at Sea World on Friday, saying the Gold Coast was 'already poorer' for not having it. Crisafulli outlined some conditions if the project was to go ahead, including that it did not disturb local residents and that it did not become an enclave for the rich and famous. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has been pushing the idea of private beach clubs on the Glitter Strip for years and says it is 'great' that the Premier has come on board. Tate said the clubs would be run from October to March and would boost tourism in the area. A controversial beach club was trialled at Kurrawa in 2022 with permission from local council, copping fierce backlash from locals. Locals aired multiple issues, include the privatisation of public beaches, pollution, environmental damage and anti-social behaviour. Bondi Beach's proposed club One of the more recent examples of a proposed but eventually shutdown beach club in Australia was the Amalfi Beach Club in Bondi, in Sydney's east. The first images of a proposed beach club at Sydney's Bondi Beach were released back in 2021 as the creator attempted to lodge a development application for the venue. The Amalfi beach club, named after the picturesque coastal Italian town, planned to take up 1.3 per cent of the sand at Bondi, if approved, and would operate out of two shipping containers. Creator Janek Gazecki told back in April, 2021 that while the chances of the club being approved are slim, it would have both social and economic benefits. In 2020, more than 30,000 furious locals signed a petition in a bid to stop the beach club going ahead. 'Given the current level of misinformation in the community, fuelled not just by a very vocal social media contingent, but also political grandstanding, our chances of success at the moment are very slim,' Gazecki said at the time. 'However, if our proposal is assessed democratically on its merits, then its chances would become overwhelmingly high, given it is based on existing and successful beach clubs across Australia, and is highly beneficial both socially and economically. 'My commitment to our supporters, and the Bondi Beach business community, it to see it through to the end and put forward the best argument I can. 'That is all I can do.' The proposal is yet to gain political support like the one on the Gold Coast. A Waverley Council spokesperson said in 2021 that consent for the Bondi club would need to be provided by Planning Minister Rob Stokes before any decision is made on the proposed club as Bondi Beach is Crown Land. 'My previous views about this kind of proposal remain unchanged and I will step in to stop a proposal to carve off part of the beach for private use,' Stokes said in a statement to 'Comparing a restaurant, one-off festival or the outdoor cinema at Centennial Park with this proposal is ridiculous. 'Our beaches are for everyone and should be free.' But in his application, Gazecki made the point that several commercial activities had taken place on or nearby Bondi beach, including the City2Surf race, The Dinner en Blanc event, The Iconic Swimwear Launch and the Borat Movie launch. 'Allegations of elitism levelled against our project were not only completely offensive, unfounded and based in pure conjecture, but were also profoundly ironic,' he said.

GWM is set to unveil its first supercar as it looks to muscle in on Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren turf. Company chairman Wei Jiajun posted an image of what appears to be a low-slung, two-door sports car on social media to celebrate the automaker's 35th anniversary. The vehicle under a silk cover sits below the waist height of the executives surrounding it, with a low bonnet and arching rear silhouette suggesting it has a mid-mounted powertrain. To be launched under a new 'super luxury' sub-brand called Confidence Auto, development of a GWM supercar was confirmed by GWM chief technology officer Wu Huixiao earlier this year. The confirmation came with the bold promise it would be better than the Ferrari SF90, the Italian brand's first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supercar. In Australia, the SF90 has a list price of $846,888, meaning a price tag of more than $1 million once on-road costs are added.
