Liver King unmasked: Netflix's explosive documentary reveals truth behind raw meat influencer's £75m empire

Netflix is gearing up to release one of its most shocking documentaries yet – Untold: The Liver King – delving into the unbelievable story of Brian Johnson, the fitness influencer better known as the Liver King. Johnson built a multi-million-pound empire promoting a diet of raw meat, organ consumption, and extreme ancestral living. The film, set to premiere on May 13, promises to expose the truth behind Johnson's rapid rise to fame, the controversies that followed, and the dark secrets he tried to keep hidden. With interviews from the man himself, his family, and former associates, the documentary will unravel how an ex-pharmaceutical rep transformed into one of the internet's most divisive health gurus – before it all came crashing down. Now, the documentary promises to expose the truth behind his rapid rise, featuring interviews with Johnson, his family, and business partners. Director Joe Pearlman told Netflix's Tudum: "The truth was even crazier than I could have imagined." With interviews from the man himself, his family, and former associates, the documentary will unravel how an ex-pharmaceutical rep transformed into one of the internet's most divisive health gurus – before it all came crashing down. The Rise of the Liver King Johnson, a former biochemistry student turned supplement mogul, first gained notoriety in 2021 when he began posting videos of himself consuming raw liver, bone marrow, and even bull testicles as part of his so-called 'ancestral lifestyle'. His extreme diet, combined with his heavily muscular physique, quickly earned him a cult following. With six million TikTok followers, he preached his 'nine ancestral tenets' – a philosophy that included eating raw meat, exposing himself to extreme cold, and engaging in brutal physical challenges. He claimed this lifestyle was the key to peak human performance, insisting his incredible physique was achieved naturally. His supplement company, Heart & Soil, capitalised on his fame, selling products designed to complement his primal diet. The business reportedly earned him an astonishing $100 million (£75 million) per year, turning him into one of the most profitable influencers in the fitness world. The Controversy Begins Despite his claims of authenticity, Johnson faced fierce backlash from nutritionists and doctors, who warned that his diet was not only unnecessary but dangerous. Experts highlighted the risks of bacterial infections, high cholesterol, heart disease, and digestive issues associated with consuming raw meat regularly. Yet, Johnson dismissed critics, doubling down on his claims that modern diets were 'weak' compared to the ancestral way of living. His followers, dubbed the Liver King tribe' passionately defended him, buying his supplements and mimicking his extreme routines. 'I Misled You' In December 2022, the Liver King's empire faced a seismic blow when leaked emails revealed he had been spending $11,000 (£8,000) per month on performance-enhancing drugs, including anabolic steroids and human growth hormone (HGH). The revelation directly contradicted his years of claims that his physique was achieved naturally through his diet and lifestyle. Facing a massive online backlash, Johnson was forced to issue a humiliating public apology, admitting to 'pharmacological intervention' and begging his followers for forgiveness. "I misled you," he confessed in a tearful video. "I got caught up in the game, and I lied." The Fallout: Lawsuits and Lost Followers The scandal sparked outrage among his fanbase, with some followers filing a $25 million (£19 million) lawsuit against him, accusing him of fraud and deception. Though the case was eventually dropped, the damage to his reputation was irreversible. Many former devotees felt betrayed, questioning everything he had preached. His credibility as a 'natural' fitness icon was destroyed overnight, and his once-loyal audience began to abandon him. What Will Netflix's Shocking Doc Expose? Netflix's Untold: The Liver King promises to go deeper than ever before, exploring not just the scandal but the psychology behind Johnson's rise. Director Joe Pearlman, who also helmed the hit documentary Britney vs Spears, described the Liver King's story as 'even crazier than I could have imagined.' The documentary will feature interviews with Johnson's inner circle, including his family and business partners, shedding light on how he constructed his persona and the relentless hustle that kept him at the top of social media algorithms. A Cautionary Tale for the Social Media Age? The Liver King's story is more than just a bizarre internet spectacle – critics believe it's a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked influencer culture. In an era where shock value and extreme content drive engagement, Johnson's rise and fall highlight how easily misinformation can spread when there are no gatekeepers. Pearlman summed it up: "We live in a time when someone can reach hundreds of millions of people without going through any kind of traditional gatekeeping. 'No background checks: just a phone and a guy. When shock and outrage get views, what are you willing – or even able – to keep doing to stay at the top of the algorithm?" Liver King's Comeback? Despite the scandal, Johnson still maintains a following, with some fans choosing to forgive or ignore his past deceptions. Whether he can ever rebuild his empire remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – his story is far from over. Untold: The Liver King premieres on Netflix on May 13

Generate Key Takeaways Many PS5 Pro games are having performance issues, and there's been no response from Sony, developers, or publishers. Almost any product or service is expected to have some major setbacks or performance issues at launch, but the internet is always quick to pick up on it. The latest launch of Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro console saw various games expected to get a performance boost with the new console, such as God of War: Ragnarok and Baldur's Gate 3. However, players have been quick to report many issues with the games supposed to be enhanced by the PS5 Pro. Some of the most recent feedback from gamers has been on Bloober Team and Konami's remake of the iconic survival horror game Silent Hill 2. As spotted by Eurogamer, fans have noticed numerous graphic issues along with a shimmering or flickering effect. 'I immediately knew something was off without even seeing gameplay previously or even playing the game before this,' said Unlocky-Soil-2456 on Reddit. 'That's how bad this is. I can't even bring myself to play it in this state because it's so distracting.' One of the major issues fans of the horror game are concerned about was that neither Bloober Team nor Konami have not formally addressed the issues. One fan posted a sad comment: 'I can't even bring myself to play it in this state because it's so distracting. I feel like even if I did play the game in this state it would just get worse throughout the game and I would be even more pissed off. So 70 bucks down the drain because it still hasn't been fixed yet. I feel like I am gonna get to play this game after the holidays at the rate Konami and Bloober are going at this point…' PS5 Pro Games Having Issues: Silent Hill 2, CoD: Black Ops 6 2 Players are reporting issues from other games too, the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. 'I love my PS5 Pro for the most part, most games look wonderful, but there seems to be an issue with some games,' said Chaystic on ResetEra. 'There's this weird shimmering, aliasing, whatever you wanna call it. One big example is Black Ops 6, I thought my Pro was faulty or something, but it turns out I'm not the only one who noticed it. I've seen several social media posts who reported the same.' The same trend on graphical problems trickled into other popular titles too. PS5 Pro gamers pointed out that Spider-Man 2, Stellar Blade, and Alan Wake 2 also had some graphic issues of their own on the new console. Digital Foundry discovered what it called 'severe image quality problems' in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. 'There are severe image quality concerns when elements like foliage interact with ray tracing,' it said. 'The end result is a strobing image quality downgrade that makes this Pro patch difficult to recommend.' While the PS5 Pro recently launched on November 7th, it still has some time to cook and come back with many patches and fixes. Just like many game launches, the rhetoric seems to be related to a couple of questions: why is an 'enhanced' console making games look worse, and why launch a console with a bunch of performance issues? The main frustration from fans seems to be that Sony or other major devs and publishers have not addressed the issues yet. The lack of communication is what is driving gamers nuts, which is totally fair. If it is anything like the launch of games like Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man's Sky, PS5 Pro owners will not be thinking about these issues about 6 months down the line from now…hopefully.
