New York Knicks (0-1) vs Boston Celtics (1-0) Summer League Game #2 7/13/25

Yahoo3 days ago
The Celtics take on the New York Knicks in the second Summer League game for both teams. Unlike the Celtics first opponent, the Grizzlies, neither team played in California or Salt Lake City. The Celtics beat the Memphis Grizzlies 92-78 in their first game on Friday, while the Knicks lost to the Detroit Pistons 104-86 in their first game, also on Friday.
The Celtics roster includes 15 players including undrafted players, the Celtics 3 draft picks, 2 way players and 2 players from the Celtics roster last season. Jordan Walsh returns as a 3rd year player. Baylor Scheierman is entering his second season and showed some flashes last season. Miles Norris returns after half a season as a 2 way player with the Celtics.

The Celtics 3 draft picks are also expected to play for the Celtics in Summer League. Hugo Gonzalez, the Celtics lone first round pick, is expected to be on the Celtics roster this season and should be exciting to watch in Summer League. The Celtics 2nd round picks, Amari Williams and Max Shulga, are both expected to sign 2-way contracts with the Celtics this season.
Charles Bassey, who wasn't even originally on the Celtics roster, was perhaps the Celtics biggest surprise in their first game. Bassey was the 53rd pick by Philadelphia in 2021 and was waived after one year. He was signed by San Antonio as a 2 way player but was later converted to a regular contract. He injured his knee in March of 2022 and missed the rest of that season. He then tore his ACL in December of 2023. He played in 36 games for the Spurs last season. The Celtics are thin in the frontcourt and so Bassey could have a chance to earn a contract with the team.
The Knicks Summer League team features Marjon Beauchamp, who has 3 years of NBA experience. They will also feature Pacome Dadiet, who was the 25th pick in the 2024 draft. Ariel Hukporti, who was the 58th pick in 2024, is a 7' center who has a chance to earn a role as back up center for the Knicks. Anton Watson, who was the 54th pick in the 2024 draft by the Celtics. He signed a 2 way contract with the Celtics but was cut for the Celtics to sign Miles Norris to a 2 way contract. He signed with the Knicks and is playing for their Summer League Team.
Matt Reynolds will be the Celtics head coach for the Celtics Summer League team. Reynolds started as the Video Coordinator for the Celtics in 2015. He has been an assistant coach for the club since 2022. The Knicks Summer League head coach is their Director of Player Personnel, Jordan Brink. Brink left a long time job with Detroit to join the Knicks. He is the coach who decides which calls to challenge and he holds the highest percentage rate of overturned calls in the league.

Possible Starters
The Celtics started Max Shulga, Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez, Jordan Walsh and Amari Williams in Friday's game against the Grizzlies. I am going to guess that they will start the same 5 in this game. Of course, in Summer League, they may start any random 5 players and not necessarily start the same 5. The Knicks started Kolek, McCullar, Jr, Beauchamp, Dadiet, and Hukporti and I'm guessing that they start the same 5 in this game.
Keys to the Game
It's Summer League - Both coaches are going to be looking at players to see if any of them play well enough to make the main roster. They are also looking at players for their G-League teams. Some players may get a lot of playing time and some will play very little. Players who started last game may sit this game or they may start again and the players who are showing the most should get more playing time.
Defense and Rebounding - Whether it is Summer League, Preseason, Regular Season or Playoffs, defense and rebounding are always keys to getting a win. The Celtics pulled down 45 rebounds in their first game while the Knicks pulled down 38 rebounds in their first game. The team that plays harder on the defensive end and that crashes the boards for rebounds, will likely get the win.
Key Matchup
Charles Bassey vs Ariel Hukporti
These 2 centers come into Summer League looking to earn a spot on their team's main roster for the upcoming season. Both teams have a need at center and both Bassey and Hukporti impressed in their debut on Friday, particularly on the defensive end. Bassey finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks while Hukporti finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks.

Players to Watch
Boston Celtics
Jordan Walsh - Walsh played very well on Friday, finishing with a game high 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists while shooting 50% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
Hugo Gonzalez - Gonzalez impressed in his debut on Friday, finishing with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. He played hard, especially on defense. He definitely looks like he will be able to help the team this season.
Baylor Scheierman - Scheierman struggled offensively in his first outing on Friday, finishing with 8 points on 2-14 shooting from the field and 1-8 from beyond the arc. He did show some good things though with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. He needs to play better in this game.
New York Knicks
Pacome Dadiet - Dadiet finished Friday's game with 17 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist while shooting 61.5% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. The Knicks are expecting him to play well in his second Summer League.

Marjon Beauchamp - Beauchamp is beginning his 4th season and the Celtics need to see improvement in his game in Summer League. He finished Friday's game with 15 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 block while shooting 40% from the field and going 0-4 on three pointers.
Final Thoughts
As with the Celtics/Grizzlies game, the league isn't all that big these teams as they are relegated to a 5:30 time slot and are on NBA-TV rather than ESPN. However, once again, for Celtics fans, there are reasons to watch. Gonzalez is fun to watch and plays very hard and he could find a role for the Celtics this season. Walsh and Scheierman are returning players with a chance to be rotation players this season. Williams and Shulga both showed some promise on Friday and will play in Maine this season for the Celtics.

Simone Biles, Suni Lee lead Olympians to win 2025 ESPYs

Simone Biles won two ESPYs, including best female athlete, while fellow Olympic gymnastics gold medalist Suni Lee earned the best comeback award. Biles became the first two-time best female athlete recipient since Ronda Rousey in 2014-15 after also taking the honor in 2017. Biles won the 2025 best female athlete over fellow nominees who also earned 2024 Olympic titles: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas in track and field and basketball player A'ja Wilson. Biles also won best championship performance after taking three gold medals in Paris. "My sincere gratitude, appreciation and love to all of you who have stood with me on this magical journey," said Biles, who won over Stephen Curry, Rory McIlroy and Freddie Freeman. "All the highs, lows, twists and turns along the way. Six-year-old me, who first started tumbling on my parents' sofa in the living room, is floored to be standing before you right now." Lee was named best comeback athlete after winning Olympic team gold and all-around and uneven bars bronze, one year after being diagnosed with two kidney diseases. "When I was diagnosed with two rare kidney diseases, I was told I'd never compete again, but I refused to believe that," she said. "There were days where I felt scared, defeated and alone, but I always found strength around me." The other comeback nominees were also Olympians: Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, soccer player Mallory Swanson and hockey player Gabriel Landeskog. Other Olympians to win ESPY awards included Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (best male athlete, best NBA player), rugby sevens player Ilona Maher (breakthrough athlete), hockey player Alex Ovechkin (record-breaking performance), Scottie Scheffler (golfer), Coco Gauff (tennis player), Katie Taylor (boxer), tennis player Sloane Stephens (Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award) and 1960 Olympic gold medalist basketball player Oscar Robertson (Arthur Ashe Award for Courage). Paralympic snowboarding gold medalist Noah Elliott won best athlete with a disability. David Walters, a 2008 Olympic swimming relay gold medalist, and former professional soccer player Erin Regan won the Pat Tillman Award for Service. Walters, a Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter, and Regan, a Los Angeles County Fire firefighter-paramedic, were among those who fought the Southern California wildfires in January. Alex Morgan and Diana Taurasi, Olympic gold medalists who retired in the last year, shared an icon award. Analyst Reveals What Separates Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes From Other Top QBs

Analyst Reveals What Separates Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes From Other Top QBs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the NFL rankings for quarterbacks coming out recently, Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes is still No. 1, despite a couple of down seasons. Granted, the Chiefs won a Super Bowl and went to another, but Patrick's stats aren't the usual ones we've seen from him, posting lower passing yards and touchdown totals while the interceptions have been double-digits for the past four years. Some have Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson and even Joe Burrow above Mahomes when it comes to the best quarterback in football, but ESPN's Dan Orlovsky has detailed exactly what makes Patrick better than his rivals. "The gap has never been this ridiculously big gap when it comes to Patrick, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow," Orlovsky said on ESPN's GetUp. "All three of those guys had better seasons last year than Patrick did, yes. But there is the reality that Patrick, not once, not twice, but three or four times, has played his absolute best when it's been needed the most." "Those other three guys haven't necessarily done that. And so, is Patrick the best at the position? He's still the top dog when it comes to you got to go be your very best when it's needed the most. When it comes to the ability to play, those guys have always been kind of nipping at his heels." We can't argue with that. Plus, in 2023, Mahomes, in the playoffs, went into Highmark Stadium in Buffalo and beat Josh Allen, and then in the AFC Championship game, rolled into Baltimore and beat Lamar Jackson. Then we add in that Mahomes beat Allen again in 2024 in the playoffs (4-0 vs. Josh in the postseason), so that givers further credence to Orlovsky's thoughts on Patrick being No. 1. When push comes to shove, he gets it done, while the others haven't. It is really as simple as that, and until the chasing pack do it, or Mahomes falters in the big moments, the NFL's top dog will always reside in Kansas City. Wyndham Clark reportedly banned from Oakmont Country Club due to ‘recent behavior' at US Open

American golfer Wyndham Clark has reportedly been banned from Oakmont Country Club after he allegedly caused damaged to the club's venerated locker room at June's US Open. According to a letter from Oakmont Country Club president John Lynch sent to members that Golf Digest – which, like CNN, is part of Warner Bros. Discovery – obtained, the decision was made because of Clark's 'recent behavior.' 'Several of you have inquired about the situation involving Wyndham Clark and the steps being taken in response to his recent behavior. Following multiple discussions with the USGA and the OCC Board, a decision has been made that Mr. Clark will no longer be permitted on OCC property,' the letter said. 'This decision will remain in effect unless formally reconsidered and approved by the Board. Reinstatement would be contingent upon Mr. Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the Board's choosing, and the successful completion of counseling and/or anger management sessions.' CNN has contacted Oakmont Country Club and the United States Golf Association – the governing body of golf in the US – for comment. The course at Oakmont frustrated many of the world's best golfers at this year's US Open and only one player, winner J.J. Spaun, finished under par. In what were tricky conditions, Clark – who won the US Open in 2023 – did not make the cut to play over the weekend and finished at 8-over par. Following his missed cut, reports on social media circulated that Clark had caused damage to Oakmont's lockers after one of his rounds. At the Travelers Championship in Connecticut a week later, Clark apologized for his actions. 'I've had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year, some lows. I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm very sorry for what happened,' the 31-year-old told reporters at the tournament. 'But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up. I still want to try to make the Ryder Cup team. I still am on the outside looking in for the FedEx Cup. So I'm starting to move on and focus on those things.' He was far from alone in his anger last weekend. Many players were seen throwing clubs, slamming them in frustration, and cursing the brutal course. It's not the first time this season Clark has expressed his anger on the course. At the 2025 PGA Championship, the world No. 28 threw his club after a drive, damaging a tee box. Oakmont Country Club is next set to host the US Open in 2033. Clark will have an exception to qualify for the tournament through his 2023 victory. CNN's Kyle Feldscher contributed to this report.
