French President Macron to visit Singapore, exchange agreements on defence, AI
SINGAPORE: France and Singapore will exchange agreements to cooperate in areas including defence and security, law, artificial intelligence and transport during a state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron will be in Singapore between May 29 and May 30, and will deliver the keynote speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue on May 30 – the first European leader to do so.
The state visit will also commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and France, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on May 29.
This is the third leg of a South-East Asia tour by Macron. He is coming from Indonesia where he signed a preliminary defence pact that could lead to new orders of French military equipment, and before that was in Vietnam where he inked a deal for Airbus planes.
On the first day of his visit to Singapore, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his wife will host a dinner for Macron and his wife.
The next day, Macron will receive a ceremonial welcome at Parliament House, where he will call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and attend a state banquet hosted by Tharman in honour of him and his wife.
He will also meet again with PM Wong, who is also Finance Minister, and they will together witness the exchange of the Memoranda of Understanding on the areas of cooperation.
Macron will be accompanied by French leaders including Minister for the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty Eric Lombard, Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, Minister Delegate for AI and Digital Affairs Clara Chappaz. - The Straits Times/ANN

Florida to execute revenge killer in 26th US death penalty case this year
MIAMI: A 54-year-old man convicted of a 1993 revenge killing is set to be executed in Florida on Tuesday, marking the 26th execution in the United States this year—the highest number in a decade. Michael Bell will receive a lethal injection at 6:00 pm (2200 GMT) at Florida State Prison in Raiford for the murders of Jimmy West, 23, and Tamecka Smith, 18. Florida has carried out seven executions this year, contributing to a national total of 25. Bell's execution will bring the US count to 26, the highest since 2015 when 28 executions took place. Nine more executions are scheduled for the remainder of the year. Bell was convicted in 1995 for shooting West and Smith outside a Jacksonville liquor store. Court records reveal he sought revenge for the killing of his brother, Lamar Bell, months earlier by West's half-brother, Theodore Wright. Despite presenting new evidence and recanted trial testimony, Bell's final appeal was rejected by the Florida Supreme Court, which cited 'overwhelming' evidence of his guilt. This year, 20 executions in the US have been conducted via lethal injection, two by firing squad, and three by nitrogen hypoxia—a method involving nitrogen gas inhalation that has been condemned by UN experts as cruel and inhumane. The death penalty remains legal in 27 US states, while 23 have abolished it. California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania currently enforce moratoriums. Former President Donald Trump has advocated for expanding capital punishment for severe crimes. - AFP

UNRWA warns of Israeli plan to create 'mass internment camps' in southern Gaza
Israel has long been laying the groundwork for such a plan through the establishment of aid distribution points in southern Gaza. 15 Jul 2025 09:40pm A Palestinian girl finds his way amid the rubble of a building hit in an Israeli strike in the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on July 10, 2025. - (Photo by EYAD BABA / AFP) RAMALLAH - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) media advisor, Adnan Abu Hasna in Gaza, has raised alarm over Israel's reported plans to establish what it calls a "humanitarian city" in southern Gaza. Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that he warned that the initiative is essentially a blueprint for mass internment camps. In a press statement, Abu Hasna said Israel has long been laying the groundwork for such a plan through the establishment of aid distribution points in southern Gaza. "Now, they are openly declaring their intent to forcibly displace the population of Gaza into collective detention camps in Rafah, as a prelude to their expulsion from Palestinian land,' he stated. He warned that this development signals Israel's continued commitment to the forced transfer of Gaza's population, expressing deep concern over the extreme pressure being applied to Palestinians. He further cautioned that the so-called humanitarian zone is incapable of hosting Gaza's 2 million residents within just 60 square kilometres of devastated land, describing the area as uninhabitable and void of any semblance of life or future. Abu Hasna urged the international community to intervene immediately to halt what he described as a dangerous and deliberate attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians under the guise of humanitarian relief. - BERNAMA

Uber taps China's Baidu for robotaxis in Asia, Middle East
UBER Technologies Inc. and Baidu Inc. plan to launch robotaxis on the ride-sharing platform in several markets outside of the US and mainland China through a multiyear partnership. Baidu's autonomous vehicles will be available on the Uber app in Asia and the Middle East later this year, the companies said in a statement Tuesday. Thousands of vehicles will be deployed as part of the partnership, the companies said. Baidu, which runs one of the largest fleets of robotaxis in China, is the latest Chinese autonomous driving technology company to partner with Uber to launch its services overseas. Baidu's robotaxi service, Apollo Go, has provided more than 11 million public rides in more than a dozen cities globally, exceeding the 10 million rides by Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo as of late May. Baidu has also been eyeing an expansion of its services in Switzerland, Singapore and Malaysia. Other Chinese firms like US-listed WeRide Inc., Pony AI Inc. and Beijing Momenta Technology Co. have also struck agreements with Uber to offer robotaxis on the platform in some European and Middle Eastern markets in the years ahead. San Francisco-based Uber has made more than a dozen global partnerships with technology developers and automakers, including Waymo, as it positions itself as an investor and commercialization platform for driverless vehicles, rather than developing the technology in-house. Autonomous rides are currently available on the Uber app in Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta and Abu Dhabi thanks to those arrangements. –BLOOMBERG
