Mazda gives us a first peek at the third-generation CX-5 SUV ahead of July reveal
Image: Supplied
The Mazda CX-5 is the Japanese brand's most popular vehicle, both globally and in South Africa. However, the second-generation model has been on the scene since 2016, and is overdue for replacement.
That is set to happen imminently, with Mazda's Australian division confirming this week that the third-generation CX-5 will make its global debut on Thursday, July 10.
Mazda is also giving us our first official, albeit blurry, glimpse of the new CX-5 through teaser images that hint at its 'sharper' exterior design.
The new model promises a sharper design, but won't be radically different.

The carmaker also promises a more 'spacious' and 'uncluttered' cabin, featuring advanced 'human-centric' technology and safety systems.
It is coming to South Africa, with the local division confirming earlier this year that the new CX-5 was one of four new models planned for introduction in the next two years. Also in the planning is the CX-60 PHEV, CX-80 and Mazda 6 e electric sedan.
The new CX-5's technical details remain under wraps, but Mazda has previously confirmed that it will feature an in-house hybrid powertrain. That will make it somewhat different from the similarly sized CX-50 in the US, which uses Toyota hybrid tech.
'Designed to fit a wide range of lifestyles, this third-generation CX-5 delivers even more of what matters most - offering a more confident design, enhanced comfort, and greater everyday usability - all while staying true to the joy of driving that defines every Mazda,' the company said.
The current Mazda CX-5 is among the most affordable vehicles in its class, with pricing starting at R570,500 for the 2.0 Active.
It remains to be seen whether the new model will come in at that competitive level. However, Australia's WhichCar website, citing insider information, reported last year that the new CX-5 would offer similar 'size, packaging and value' to the current version.
Because it's one thing to push upmarket with models such as the CX-60. But when it comes to your most popular model, why risk losing a winning formula?

This is it: Mazda starts teasing all-new South Africa-bound CX-5
Hiroshima's most important model is expected to become a hybrid-only model and will arrive on local soil in 2026. CX-5 has been styled in accordance with Mazda's recent CX-models, the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90. Image: Mazda Having made its spy shot debut in January, Mazda has officially released first teaser images of the all-new third generation CX-5 it will unveil on 10 July. South Africa, yes One of Hiroshima's most important models, the replacement for the current KF generation, which debuted back in 2016, had initially been expected to debut next year, though this subsequently proved inaccurate following comments made by company CEO of South Africa, Craig Roberts. ALSO READ: Next Mazda CX-5 spied again as company commits to South Africa 'The new CX-5 will debut in the third quarter of this year and probably hit our shores in early 2026. It is the first product we are really, really excited about,' he said in a podcast on Moneyweb at the beginning. What to expect? A model that forms part of Mazda's product renewal for the South African market supposed to have kicked-off this year, the mentioned teasers show the CX-5 in the brand's trademark Soul Crystal Red with a design similar to the CX-60 and CX-90. Sharper rear-end styling has seemingly been modelled not only on the CX-60, but also the BMW X1. Image: Mazda Set to also mirror the CX-70 and CX-80 aesthetically, the CX-5 will continue to provide seating for five only, but an interior defined as 'uncluttered', 'more spacious' and with a 'human-centric' design. Going further, the official wording with the images proclaims 'a more engaging, intuitive drive with refined control and a smoother response'. Hybrid only? Although no exact details were revealed, speculation has alleged the wording as making reference to the CX-5 becoming a hybrid-only model with the same assortment of plug-in hybrid units as its siblings, as well as the self-charging Toyota-supplied hybrid system used in the North America-only CX-50. Likely to be a four-cylinder only affair once again, the CX-5 will, however, not be offered with a diesel engine or a manual gearbox – both already dropped from the KF range. Remaining is the option of all-wheel-drive as an alternative to the standard front-wheel-drive. More soon With just over a week left till its unveiling, don't be surprised if more details are revealed then as part of the teaser campaign. Mercedes-Benz South Africa explains reasoning behind temporary East London plant closure
Mercedes-Benz has temporarily halted production at its East London plant. Image: Supplied Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) confirmed that it has temporarily halted production at its assembly plant in East London. The company told IOL that the planned non-production period, effective from June 24 to July 30, 2025, is a normal occurrence. 'An annual non-production period at the East London production plant is standard procedure and it is common cause for production plants to suspend production based on volume adjustments in the production programme,' an MBSA spokesperson said. 'Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) continually assesses and adjusts its production planning in alignment with global demand, market dynamics, and the company's strategic objectives.' However, the spokesperson would not be drawn on speculation that US tariff structures might have led to the production halt, stating that the company was continuously assessing the impact of the new US tariffs, but that it would not comment further on the matter. South Africa is currently attempting to negotiate a more beneficial trade arrangement with the US after Donald Trump imposed a 25% blanket tariff on all automotive imports into the country. The US is a major export destination for MBSA, which currently produces the C-Class sedan in both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive guises for numerous world markets. Video Player is loading. When asked previously, MBSA representatives could not confirm the percentage of its vehicles exported to the US, due to international sales reporting protocol. South Africa's top exports in 2025 are the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Ranger, Mercedes C-Class and BMW X3. VWSA also temporarily shut its Eastern Cape plant in Kariega from April 14 to May 12, however this was in order to upgrade the factory for a new compact SUV model, which will be launched in 2027.
