Hugh Freeze Opens Up About Mounting Pressure Before Crucial Season
The 2025 college football season could be crucial for many prominent coaches at major universities.
If these coaches are unable to secure wins this season, they may find themselves looking for new jobs after the season ends. This is the situation for Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze. The Tigers are on a four-season losing streak, with two of those seasons occurring under Freeze's leadership. This type of losing streak hasn't happened at Auburn in over 70 years. The Tigers also haven't won more than six games since the 2019 season.
Freeze appeared on the podcast "See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack," where he discussed the pressure he faces heading into the upcoming season.
"I don't even have a seat at the table to write the story," Freeze said. "I don't even have a pen to write the story. It's not mine to write. I approach it like that. I don't have the pressure or any of that. At the same time, I'm a realist, and Auburn's a place that has to win. I believe we're going to. I think we finally have enough depth and talent."
Freeze has a record of 11-14 in his two seasons at Auburn. However, he has a proven ability to win, particularly in the SEC. During his five seasons as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels, he achieved a record of 39-25.
Freeze understands that this is a crucial year for him to demonstrate that he deserves to remain as coach. If he is dismissed after the season, he will be entitled to 75 percent of the remaining value of his contract, with no offsets. He signed a six-year deal before the 2023 season, which began at $6.5 million and increases by $250,000 each year. This season, he is slated to earn $7 million, which would total almost $17 million by the end of the 2025 season.
247Sports reports that there is reason for optimism regarding the Tigers, who have secured the No. 8 recruiting class as well as the No. 8 transfer portal class. Among their notable additions from the transfer portal are quarterback Jackson Arnold and wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr.
In his first season as the starting quarterback at Oklahoma, Arnold passed for 1,421 yards, throwing 12 touchdowns and only three interceptions across 10 games. It is important to note that he was benched midseason after a performance that included turnovers.
Singleton Jr. had an impressive season at Georgia Tech, accumulating 754 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He was also ranked among the top five players in the transfer portal.
Another positive aspect for Freeze is that, despite his seasons not going as well as hoped, ESPN's Paul Finebaum does not see any increasing pressure from Auburn's athletic department. He recently stated that he does not believe Freeze is in a critical situation. Finebaum noted that Freeze is well-liked by the Auburn community and has support where it really matters. However, he described Freeze's first two seasons as quite underwhelming.
Auburn opens the season on Aug. 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET, facing the Baylor Bears on the road. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 15, 2025, where it first appeared.

Max Holloway Sends a Clear Message to Ilia Topuria After His UFC 318 Victory
Max Holloway Sends a Clear Message to Ilia Topuria After His UFC 318 Victory originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A dominant win at UFC 318 sets the stage for a potential high-stakes rematch. It was an emotional night at UFC 318, as fans witnessed the farewell fight of a true legend. Dustin Poirier closed out his storied career in front of a roaring hometown crowd in New Orleans, but the night belonged to Max Holloway. In their trilogy bout, Holloway avenged his loss from UFC 236 in emphatic fashion, silencing the crowd and reminding everyone that his story is far from over. But even in a night filled with history, Holloway's post-fight comments hinted that the chapter ahead could be just as compelling. In a post-fight interview with Carlos Contreras Legaspi, captured by Championship Rounds, Holloway was asked point-blank about running it back with Ilia Topuria. His response was raw: 'For doing what he did to me. The first man to [knock me out]. Of course I want revenge.' Those words quickly ignited speculation about what's next for the former champion. Interestingly, Holloway wasn't shy about Topuria during fight week either. While acknowledging the Spaniard's recent success, he also downplayed the streak: 'He has names and he beat the names — you can't deny that,' Holloway said. 'It just sucks with everything that was going on with that Volk fight… people are just looking at the name and not the record. Charles was on a 1-fight win streak. At the end of the day, they're just names. UFC is lining them up and he's just knocking them down.' With a decisive win over Poirier and a move toward the lightweight mix, a Holloway-Topuria rematch is definitely an option. It's personal, it's marketable, and it could settle one of the most shocking results in recent UFC history. If the UFC wants a fight fans will rally behind, this is the one. Dana White Reveals UFC 'Dream' Main Event Without Hesitation
Dana White Reveals UFC 'Dream' Main Event Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The UFC has exploded in popularity over the last decade under president and CEO Dana White. Once a sport that few networks wanted to televise, it has now grown into one of the most watched and followed sports in the world. With several blockbuster fights and stacked cards on the horizon—including UFC 318 next week, headlined by a BMF title bout between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier, and UFC 319 in August, featuring a middleweight title clash between Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev—the excitement around the promotion continues to grow. However, all of that recently took a back seat to breaking news from President Donald Trump, who announced last week that a first-ever UFC event would be held at the White House in the near future. UFC CEO Dana White has since confirmed the development. This week, White appeared on the "Full Send Podcast" and was asked about the potential event. He shared that fighters from all over the roster have been reaching out, eager to secure a spot on the historic card. If the event goes forward, White promised it would be "stacked." Still, when asked about the biggest possible fight in the UFC right now, White didn't hesitate to name his dream main event: rising star Tom Aspinall vs. the greatest of all time, Jon Jones—who recently re-entered the testing pool after briefly retiring. When the fight is going on… one whole backdrop will be the White House, and the other side will be the Washington Monument,' White said. 'We will absolutely, positively put on the baddest card of all time. Literally everybody wants to fight on this card. The dream main event right now would be Aspinall vs. Jones.' The event is still a ways off, with a potential date likely set for sometime in 2026—if it all comes to fruition. President Trump mentioned the goal would be to seat roughly 25,000 people, and Dana White later clarified that it would likely be a guest-only event, with invitations extended rather than tickets sold to the general public. Still, there's no shortage of high-profile fights that could be strong candidates for the card—or for any upcoming UFC event. Whether it's Jon Jones returning to face current heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, or Conor McGregor making his long-awaited comeback—which he expressed interest in doing less than 24 hours after Trump's announcement—a stacked lineup seems inevitable. Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House," McGregor posted on July 4. "I would be honored! Count me in!"This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Dana White and Jon Jones Feud Over UFC White House Event Explained
Dana White and Jon Jones Feud Over UFC White House Event Explained originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Recently retired UFC all-time great Jon Jones has been creating buzz due to his plans to come out of his very brief retirement, as he announced he would be returning to the Octagon when he attended the ESPYs. The former champ has also re-entered the UFC's drug-testing pool, and has expressed his desire to fight on the proposed White House UFC pay-per-view card. During the UFC 318 post-fight press conference, CEO and president Dana White clarified that he does not want Jon Jones to be part of the historic UFC event planned for the White House in July 2026, despite the former champion's eagerness to return. Given Jones' history of controversies and fight cancellations, White said, 'You know how I felt about him. I just can't risk putting him in big positions in a big spot and have something go wrong, especially the White House card.' Despite Jones' mythical status in MMA, White remains wary of trusting him with such a high-stakes event. "It's not even about him winning the belt," White clarified. "I just can't risk putting him in big positions and have something go wrong." This statement contrasts greatly with his recent Full Send podcast appearance, in which he expressed that a Jon Jones fight at the White House would be a 'dream event.' Jones, who saw White's comments, responded with disappointment. Jones wrote on social media, "I heard the comments made at last night's press conference. While I was a little disappointed, I'm still in the UFC's drug testing pool, staying sharp, and continuing to train like a professional. I'll be ready for whatever comes next." White's hesitation may stem from Jones' turbulent past, including multiple failed drug tests, recent legal issues, and high-profile fight cancellations. Most notably, Jones' constant refusal to face Tom Aspinall before his retirement led to widespread unpopularity across the MMA world, with even Dana White giving up on the heavyweight unification bout. Jones, meanwhile, insists he is ready to compete and is focused on legacy rather than titles or paychecks. "For me, it's never been just about the opponent. I'm chasing legacy, something timeless, something bigger than the moment," his social media post reads. 'So for now, I'll keep grinding, stay patient, and stay faithful. I'm ready to fight on July 4th.' If history is any indication of the possible future, however, Jones might just be bluffing and may further delay a fight against Aspinall. It will be a tiresome affair for everyone involved if he decides to once again leave the current heavyweight champion waiting for an opportunity that may never come.
