KOLKATA: A court in north Bengal's Jalpaiguri district sentenced three men to death on Thursday for the gangrape and murder of a Class 10 student in 2020, a public prosector said. Three men were sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl (File Image)
'The accused were sentenced under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso),' Debashis Dutta, special public prosecutor of the Pocso Court, told reporters.
Police had charged the accused with kidnapping, wrongful detention, gangrape, murder and destruction of evidence.
A district police officer said the crime took place in August 2020. The 15-year-old victim was a Madrasa student.
The accused, who were aged between 20 and 27 during the crime, used to work at an automobile garage and knew the victim.
On August 10, 2020, one of the three men kidnapped the girl from her home in the Rajganj area with the help of two of his friends. 'They took the minor to various hotels and raped her repeatedly before murdering her,' a police officer said.
They dumped her body in a septic tank. Her decomposed body was finally retrieved 12 days after the girl disappeared.
'The court heard 27 witnesses during the trial and described the crime as the rarest of the rare while announcing the sentence,' said Dutta.
'We sought justice. We are happy with the court order,' the victim's father told the local media.
On June 11 this year, the same court sentenced a 31-year-old man to death for raping and murdering an 11 -year-old girl in 2023. The victim, who lived in the Dhupguri region, had gone missing on September 29, 2023. Her body was found floating in the Dudwa river on October 1, 20 km away from her home.

Mangaluru (Karnataka), Jul 27 (PTI) A fugitive accused in the 2014 shootout at Bharati Builders' office in Bejai, Mangaluru– allegedly orchestrated by associates of underworld gangster Ravi Pujari–has been arrested after nearly a decade on the run, police said on Sunday. Acting on reliable inputs and under the guidance of the City Police Commissioner, a team from Urwa Police Station, including Inspector Venugopal and constables Pramod, Narayan, and Govindraj, apprehended the accused Ganesh Sakat in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, Police said in a release. Sakat was produced before the court, and has been remanded to judicial custody, it said. The case, registered at Urwa Police Station, under sections 447 (Criminal trespass), 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 27 of the Arms Act. The accused, a native of Karad in Maharashtra's Satara district, had been absconding since 2015 after failing to appear before the JMFC 3rd Court in Mangaluru, which subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest. Police revealed that the accused is also wanted in another case registered at Kavoor Police Station. Additionally, he faces charges under the Arms Act in Karad, Maharashtra. Vasai: A security guard at an educational institute in Virar (west) was arrested on Sunday for sexually harassing two students studying in class 10. The police said that the 53-year-old security guard had cornered the two boys aged 15 and 17 in the kitchen of the school canteen after school hours and "sexually harassed" the boys, according to a complaint lodged at Arnala Coastal police, Virar, on Saturday by a senior office-bearer of the school-cum-junior college. The complaint mentions that the crime took place sometime in the third week of June, in the evening. The cops traced the security guard and arrested him under charges of sexual harassment and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and produced him in court, which has sent him to police custody. Gaya: A 14-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly raping and strangling a five-year-old girl to death on Saturday night near a village under the Dobhi police station area. This marks the second such incident involving minors in Gaya district within the past four days, police said. The parents searched for her after they returned home and foundthe body with a towel wrapped around her neck in the nursery and informed the police around 10 pm (Representative photo) The girl's parents had gone to an adjacent village for paddy plantation while she was playing outside the house. The accused allegedly lured her on the pretext of purchasing chocolates around 7 pm and took her to a nursery in the forest department near Piparghati market and raped her, police said. The parents searched for her after they returned home. 'They found the body with a towel wrapped around her neck in the nursery and informed the police around 10 pm. She was bleeding from her private part when she was recovered,' Dobhi station house officer (SHO) Mukesh Kumar said. Police said that the family, belonging to a Scheduled Caste, was financially not stable. His clothes were seized, and he was sent to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH) for medical examination. The forensic science team also visited the crime site. A case under Sections 103(1) and 62(2) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act was registered with Dobhi police station. 'The body was sent to ANMMCH at Gaya for autopsy,' senior superintendent of police (SSP) Anand Kumar said. 'Police would recommend speedy trial of the case to ensure severe punishment to the accused,' SSP Kumar said. Meanwhile, a driver and a technician were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 26-year-old female candidate inside an ambulance on Thursday, while she was being taken to a hospital after fainting during a race held as part of the home guard recruitment in Bihar's Bodh Gaya.
