Guwahati: Assam BJP unveiled its 'Sankalp Patra', a 15-point manifesto for the upcoming panchayat elections scheduled for May 2 and 7. The document outlines plans for comprehensive optical fibre networks to provide high-speed internet connectivity throughout Assam's villages.
The party committed to accelerating financial assistance for farmers who suffer crop losses of 33% or more due to natural calamities.
The manifesto features educational initiatives, including a Rs 300 monthly allowance for Class X board examination students. Evening study centres will be established in villages, with local educated youth conducting specialised classes for Class X board candidates. "These classes will run for about five months from Oct for the benefit of the Class X board examinees," stated CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, noting that he drew inspiration from night schools operated by an NGO in Jharkhand during his visit last year.
At the state BJP headquarters on Saturday morning, state BJP president Dilip Saikia and CM Himanata Biswa Sarma, along with senior party officials including BJP state in-charge Harish Dwivedi, launched the 'Sankalp Patra'. The document's introduction encompassed the principles of 'Gramoday, 'Sarvoday', 'Antyoday', and 'Rashtraday'.

"We have governed over the past few years by challenging established thoughts, ideologies, and philosophies. Those entrenched notions that once acted as barriers to holistic development have been consistently challenged by our govt's work over the last four years. There was once a time when Assam's chief ministers almost begged before Delhi, but today, Assam has reached a stage where we are contributing towards the nation's development," said Himanta.
The CM emphasised that an effective panchayati raj system would boost local development. Sarma insisted on collaborative efforts between panchayats under MGNREGA and the PWD to speed up road construction. He reported that 3.5 lakh new houses are under construction through the
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
, adding that the chief minister's housing scheme would ensure accommodation for all underprivileged families.
Despite concerns over the Pahalgam terror incident affecting electoral sentiment, Sarma discussed BJP's ongoing campaign efforts to deliver on promises to villagers. Saikia recognised ordinary citizens as the architects of a safe, developed, and great Assam. He detailed how BJP develops manifestos through public consultation, with this 'Sankalp Patra' incorporating community feedback. "More than 3,500 individuals sent their suggestions via email, and the document was prepared accordingly,' Saikia said.
Saikia stressed that BJP treats every election, from panchayat to Parliament, as equally crucial. The manifesto promises Rs 2 lakh each to 5,000 youths per constituency over five years through the Chief Minister's Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan. Other commitments include competitive exam preparation support, additional cooking gas cylinder subsidies, enhanced road and health services in tea garden areas, and funds for renovating 10 more religious sites in each village panchayat.

PM Modi's efforts herald new revolution via biofuels: Hardeep Puri

New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effort in bringing a new revolution in India through biofuels, which has resulted in Namibia's entry into the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA). The Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister said that biofuel is an energy that is obtained from household and farm waste, grains or spoiled grains, and this environmentally-friendly, clean fuel is also a powerful medium to accelerate the country's development. "Namibia joins GBA. India's initiative towards clean energy and the expansion of the Global Biofuel Alliance family is another proof of PM Narendra Modi's farsightedness on the mantra of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," the minister said in a post on X. Puri emphasised that the Prime Minister's efforts toward biofuels are bringing substantial change to the nation and improving the lives of citizens. "PM Modi's efforts have brought a 'new revolution of change through biofuel' in India. This green fuel, which is powering India's development journey, is changing and improving the lives of people from villages to cities," the minister posted. The biofuel is not only helping farmers to generate income, but the development around it is creating new employment opportunities, especially in rural areas. "Along with increasing the income of farmers, this fuel is also creating new employment opportunities in rural areas," he added. In a recent conversation with IANS, the minister said that biofuel blending has reached 20 per cent this year, which was 1.4 per cent in 2014. India today stands strong as the third-largest biofuel producer in the world. According to official estimates, ethanol blending initiatives have improved farmer incomes over the past ten years because they are made from sugarcane, created jobs in rural areas, decreased CO2 emissions equal to planting 1.75 crore trees, and saved Rs 85,000 crore in foreign exchange. Leading this effort are public sector oil companies Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, which have introduced a variety of ethanol and gasoline blends throughout the nation. --IANS aps/na
