Deccan Herald15-07-2025
Assam has been waging a relentless war against illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims for several decades. The recent attempt by the @AITCofficial to distort my media remarks and portray our stand as anti-Bengali is nothing but a desperate ploy to shield Muslim infiltrators…

‘Scandalous': Mamata Banerjee questions Delhi Police for calling Bengali ‘Bangladeshi language'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday questioned the Delhi Police for referring to Bengali as 'Bangladeshi language' in a purported letter to the Banga Bhawan in the national capital. 'This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India,' the Trinamool Congress chief said on X. 'They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all.' Banerjee was referring to a letter purportedly written by the station house officer of the Lodhi Colony police station to the Banga Bhawan, in which the officer asked for identification documents to be translated from Bengali to Hindi and English. The letter was written in the context of a case in which eight persons suspected to be Bangladeshi citizens living without valid documents in India were arrested. '…For the investigation to proceed further, it is requested that an official translator/interpreter proficient in Bangladeshi national language may kindly be provided for the aforesaid purpose,' the letter said. Banerjee said that the letter was 'scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional'. See now how Delhi police under the direct control of Ministry of Home, Government of India is describing Bengali as " Bangladeshi" language! 'Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song [the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay] are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!' she remarked. In recent days, the Trinamool Congress has been expressing its disapproval of Bengali-speaking workers outside the state being detained on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. At the party's Martyrs' Day rally on July 21, Banerjee alleged that Bengalis in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states were being harassed, detained and removed from voter rolls. The Trinamool Congress chief accused the BJP of 'unleashing linguistic terrorism' against Bengalis.

CM Mamata Banerjee, Left slam Centre over Delhi cop calling Bengali a ‘Bangladeshi language'

Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee called it a "calculated attempt" by the BJP to undermine Bengali identity and demanded immediate suspension of the police officer along with a public apology from Delhi Police, the BJP and Home Minister Amit Shah. "Bengalis are not outsiders in their own homeland," he stated. However, BJP's West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya defended the police, arguing that the language used was "absolutely correct" and distinguishing between Bengali literature from India and Bangladesh. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya accused Banerjee of defending "illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators" and stated that national security would not be compromised for "vote-bank politics." CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim posted the controversial Delhi Police letter on social media and mocked the department's ignorance. 'Will the illiterate @DelhiPolice explain what 'Bangladeshi language' means? Have they not heard of the 8th Schedule of the Constitution?' he asked. CPI(ML) Liberation leader Dipankar Bhattacharya also condemned the incident, saying it reflects 'majoritarian arrogance' and warned that fascism poses a threat to India's linguistic and cultural fabric. 'The persecution of Bengali-speaking workers as 'Bangladeshis' has now escalated into outright denial of Bengali as an Indian language. This is an assault on our multicultural unity,' Bhattacharya said in a Facebook post. He called for a united resistance against attempts to erode India's linguistic diversity and national integrity.

On Saturday, the CM said the government does not consider unauthorised occupation of public land by indigenous people as encroachment, unlike the case with illegal foreigners or doubtful citizens. He also said the government will continue its eviction drives against encroachments by suspected foreigners across the state. Live Events Talking about non-tribals living in Bodoland, Sarma said, "Nobody can touch you people till Himanta Biswa Sarma is alive. Tell all that he is there, and he will come if anything happens. "Remember that you are safe and have equal rights because THE BJP is here and there will be no second class citizens. All will live peacefully in BTR. Our Gorkha, Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, tribals and non-tribals -- no one should think about safety. We will have a peaceful BTR." The Assam government on Sunday carried out an eviction drive to clear alleged encroachment from nearly 1,000 bighas (over 133 hectares) of forest land, displacing more than 350 families, in Golaghat district. A day after completing the five-day-long first phase of a massive eviction drive to clear almost 11,000 bighas (nearly 1,500 hectares) of forest land in Rengma Reserve Forest from encroachers, the administration began a similar drive inside Nambor South Reserve Forest. At Rengma Reserve Forest in Uriamghat along the Assam-Nagaland border in Sarupathar sub-division, the eviction drive displaced around 1,500 families, mostly from the Muslim community. Besides, 205 households in the Negheribil area under Merapani, located within the Doyang Reserve Forest, have also been served eviction notices. The drive there is scheduled to commence from August 8.
