Nikon India says tariff war not going to increase camera, lenses prices in India in near future

India Today25-04-2025
With US President Donald Trump unleashing tariff war over the rest of the world, there are fears that gadgets and other items are set to become more expensive. But the fears, according to Nikon, are somewhat overblown at the moment. The company says that in India in near future its cameras and lenses will continue to have prices that are in line with the current pricing policies. In other words no impact of the tariff war currently unsettling the global supply chain on cameras and lenses sold by Nikon India. advertisementSajjan Kumar, managing director at Nikon India, told India Today Tech that at least in near future he sees no change in his company's prices here. 'Currently we don't believe tariffs will disrupt anything for Nikon,' said Sajjan. 'Our products mainly come from Thailand and Japan to India. So we don't see any immediate impact but in the long term I think we need to study how things, which just now started, how they settle down and what is the global impact.'And by near future Sajjan meant that 'at least within six months we don't see any immediate impact.'
Sajjan made his comments on the sidelines of an event where Nikon launched the Z5 II, its most-affordable new full-frame camera. The Z5 II, which is built around a 24-megapixel image sensor, improved autofocus and a fast Expeed 7 chipset, is a hybrid camera. Nikon is hoping that it will not just appeal to its traditional base of still photographers and hobbyists but also the influencers and content creators who are active on video platforms like YouTube and Instagram. advertisementOf course, one way to avoid impact from tariffs is local manufacturing. But Nikon, like other camera makers, doesn't manufacture cameras or lenses in India. 'In near future too, this is not something going to change. Currently, we do not have plans for manufacturing or assembly in India,' said Sajjan. 'While the Indian camera market shows good opportunities and is progressing, the overall volume is still limited, estimated at around 2.5 lakh units annually for the entire industry. Based on the current numbers, local manufacturing isn't under consideration. It would depend on local and potentially nearby demand.'Nikon is hoping that the Z5 II will let it expand its market share. In particular, the company is looking at a new-generation of high-end cameras who need these devices to shoot their Reels, Shorts and other video content. This is the main reason why the company has bolstered video features in the Z5 II significantly. Despite its rather reasonable price — for a full-frame camera — the Z5 II offers features like 4K UHD video at 60 frames per second, 12-bit N-RAW recording, and Full HD 120 frames per second recording for high-quality slow-motion effects. It also comes with support for in-camera 10-bit N-Log and 12-bit N-Raw video recording, which should make it easier for content creators to get the desired colours in their videos in post-processing.

EAM Jaishankar reiterates India's 'zero tolerance against terror' stance against cross-border terrorism in parliament

New Delhi: There was no communication between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump between the Pahalgam attack on 22 April and mid-June, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament on Monday. The remarks follow repeated claims by Trump that he helped broker the ceasefire between India and Pakistan – a claim consistently denied by New Delhi. Following the 22 April terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, India attacked Pakistani terror bases on 7 May under its Operation Sindoor. The hostilities continued until 10 May, when a ceasefire was called. Indian officials have consistently maintained that the ceasefire was brokered bilaterally. In a cemented statement on India's foreign policy actions in the ongoing Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar echoed Modi's new doctrine of zero tolerance against cross-border terrorism. Jaishankar, in his address to the Lok Sabha, said talks and terror cannot go hand-in-hand, and that India will not pay heed to threats of nuclear weapons. "Talks and terror cannot go together. Blood and water cannot flow together," said Jaishankar. Modi in his address to the nation on 12 May had announced India's new approach against terror. Jaishankar said the global fraternity had sided with India and its response to the terror attack in Pahalgam, where India attacked key terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He said all but three nations along with Pakistan had not supported India. Prime minister Modi received about 20 phone calls from world leaders expressing solidarity, and supporting Operation Sindoor, the external affairs minister told Parliament. Seven Indian delegations of members of Parliament across political parties had helped convey India's view to foreign governments "against cross-border terrorism, Jaishankar said. The minister said Operation Sindoor is still ongoing, but did not provide further details. Jaishankar also said the United Nations Security Council had shown solidarity with India and condemned the Pahalgam attack which left 26 people dead. 'Our goals in the Security Council were two – one, to get an endorsement from the Security Council of the need for accountability, and two, to bring to justice, those who perpetrated these attacks.' The UNSC statement, dated 25 April, also stated that every nation has the right to defend itself against cross-border terrorism. 'And, most importantly, the council underlined the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,' said Jaishankar. 'This statement of the UNSC resonated throughout the international community," he added. Jaishankar's address came after remarks by defence minister Rajnath Singh earlier in the day, who said the Indian armed forces had managed to thwart all attacks by Pakistani forces, and managed to damage key terrorist bases as well as military infrastructure.

NEP making contribution to holistic development of students: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that there have been many positive changes in the field of education during the last five years and the new National Education Policy (NEP) is making a significant contribution to the holistic and multidimensional development of students by encouraging research and innovation. In a message on the completion of five years of NEP, Modi noted that the Ministry of Education is organising Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam (ABSS) on Tuesday and new initiatives will be launched in the field of education during the programme. "Education is the medium that makes a person self-reliant and a nation strong. Our aim is to ensure such an education system in which students can move forward according to their interest, ability and dreams. Today, the country is moving on the path of progress by equipping the education related to the glorious Indian culture with technology and global standards. "There have been many positive changes in the field of education during the last five years. Whether it is education in mother tongue, strengthening school education or giving special emphasis on skill-based education, the National Education Policy is making a significant contribution to the holistic and multidimensional development of students by encouraging research and innovation," Modi said. The prime minister noted that in Amrit Kaal, India is rapidly moving towards the creation of a grand and developed country. "During this period, the role of National Education Policy-2020 will be important in promoting the confidence, curiosity and creativity of our youth. The shiksha samagam is a symbol of our shared resolve and spirit of cooperation. "I am confident that this event will not only give educational institutions an opportunity to share their best practices, strategies and achievements, but will also further strengthen the continuous efforts for the successful implementation of the National Education Policy," he said. The Ministry of Education is organising the ABSS on Tuesday to coincide with the fifth anniversary of NEP, when academicians, policymakers, educators, industry leaders and government will review the progress made so far in implementing the ambitious policy. The deliberations during ABSS 2025 will focus on making education more accessible, practical, skill-oriented and seamlessly integrated with employment opportunities, ensuring students are equipped for a dynamic global economy, they said. China rare earth ban to impact domestic production, exports across 5 sectors in India: SBI economists

Mumbai:China's ban on rare earth trade will impact domestic production and exports across five sectors in India, economists at SBI said on Monday. A report by the economists pegged the overall imports of rare earths and compounds at USD 31.9 million and magnet imports at USD 291 million in FY25. Volumes of India's consumption of rare earths and compounds has seen a rising trend, it said, adding that import of rare earth magnets by India increased sharply in FY25. "China dominates in India's direction of trade in rare earth minerals and compounds," it said, listing out priorities India needs to adopt. "The top sectors impacted by China's ban include transport equipment, basic metals, machinery, construction and electrical and electronics. Both domestic production and exports will be impacted," it added. It added that Indian financial institutions, including banks, are also at risk of some impact because of this. The SBI report recommended states to take additional steps to ensure better exploration of such resources, which can reduce dependency on imports. It also cited a ₹ 8,000-crore scheme by the government of Odisha as a case in point, and specified about efforts to search for minerals in the Ganjam district.
