Red River once again the inflection point for Sooners and Longhorns in 2025
Every year in mid-October during the State Fair of Texas, OU and UT get together at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in South Dallas right in the middle of the fair for a sporting spectacle unlike any other. The Sooners and the Longhorns are bitter rivals and there's no love lost between the players, coaches, administrators or fans.
The Red River Rivalry is always one of the biggest games on the schedule for both programs, but in 2025, both teams will use their matchup on Saturday October 11th as an inflection point for their respective seasons.
That's why it wasn't surprising when ESPN named their anticipated arch rivals for every top 25 preseason team to see the Sooners and the Longhorns in each others' crosshairs.
... the Sooners have fallen back a little and Texas is rolling into the Cotton Bowl with its own football royalty in Arch Manning. Oklahoma needs to right the ship, and all eyes will be on Dallas and where the program stands in the SEC era. - Dave Wilson, ESPN.
For the Sooners, revenge is on their minds after a 34-3 loss in Dallas last year. A 6-7 record and a 2-6 SEC record has Oklahoma gasping for oxygen in the crowded conference and a win over Texas would make folks take notice.
For the Longhorns, they need to continue their recent surge back to national prominence and build on back-to-back trips to the College Football Playoff. Texas needs to show they are still a leg up on OU in 2025.
That's what always makes this rivalry so fascinating. OU and Texas compete for recruits, portal players, the spotlight, conference title game slots, playoff berths, championships, national headlines, coaches, and attention.
This October, just like every October, crimson and burnt orange will fill the Cotton Bowl, split down the middle. Two programs, separated by a border and a river, will clash in a game that will serve as a major stepping stone for one and a potentially devastating blow for the other.

Former Iowa football QB entrenched in position battle after big quarterback domino falls
With the transfer portal constantly in flux and players now circumventing the portal by becoming a walk-on, quarterbacks are shuffling faster than a three-step dropback. The latest quarterback domino to fall is former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff joining Tulane as a walk-on. By withdrawing from school, he could walk-on at a new program without penalty. This route allows Retzlaff to bypass the transfer portal and join a new program. Retzlaff joins Tulane's QB room, which is also accompanied by former Iowa Hawkeyes and Northwestern Wildcats quarterback Brendan Sullivan. The addition of Retzlaff now entrenches Sullivan in yet another topsy-turvy quarterback room, rather similar to his final year at Iowa, when he took over for Cade McNamara. Jake Retzlaff withdrew from school at BYU just over a week ago amid honor code violations that would have led to a suspension. The suspension was stemming from a civil suit for sexual assault. The lawsuit has since been dismissed. While at BYU, Retzlaff threw for 3,595 passing yards and 23 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. Brendan Sullivan, who spent two years at Northwestern, followed by 2024 at Iowa, has thrown for 1,778 yards, 13 TD, and 8 INT during his collegiate career. He has added 407 rushing yards and 7 rushing TDs. Contact/Follow us @HawkeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Iowa news, notes and opinions. Michigan State baseball commit signs with Los Angels Angels following 2025 MLB Draft
Michigan State baseball landed a big time commitment from Luke LaCourse, a Bay City (MI) native, in 2023 - expecting the two way services of one of the state's best players. Unfortunately, that wont come to fruition for MSU. LaCourse was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels out of Bay City Western High School. Now, he has officially inked his deal with the Angels, getting a deal above slot value. The Angels deal with LaCourse comes in at around $515,000, over one-hundred thousand above the slot value at $393,700. A deal that much over slot value was enough to pry LaCourse away from East Lansing and joining Michigan State and an NIL deal.
