The Art of Looking at Yourself

The Art of Looking at Yourself

In the 21st-century, the opportunity for self-inquiry has become increasingly scarce. This diminished introspection often leaves countless personal narratives, hidden deep within us, untold.
An exhibition titled 'Atmanaveshana' recently delved into this very concept of self-inquiry, prompting sculptor Suresh Kumar to shed light on the human stories that frequently remain unspoken.
As Kumar articulates, 'The exhibition 'Atmanaveshana,' which translates to 'Self-Inquiry', is a deeply personal and spiritual journey expressed through sculpture and painting. The theme revolves around introspection, the essence of life, and the silent stories told through form and texture. 'Through my sculptures and Dr Amrit Kapoor's paintings, we invite the audience to look inward—to connect with the rhythm of nature, the symbolism of the spiritual world, and the power of timeless artistic traditions.'
A range of artworks
As the exhibition looks into the inner lives of human beings, it examines multiple layers of human emotions and personality. Kumar's artworks are a testimony to that. 'This time, I've displayed a trilogy of bull sculptures—each in a different size: large, medium, and small. All are crafted in bronze but vary structurally and in finish. It represents the life of nature, a metaphor for strength, persistence, and the spiritual grounding found in Indian rural life,' he says.
Another key piece is Life of Nature, a bronze sculpture rooted in the Indian artistic ethos—fluid yet firm, stylized yet soulful. 'I've also showcased Third Face, a contemplative human face in bronze that speaks of identity, silence, and the layered dimensions of the self,' adds Kumar.
Ways of expression
As an artist, Kumar draws his inspiration from classical Indian aesthetics; however, he likes to express in a more contemporary way. 'I primarily work in bronze, a medium I find both eternal and expressive. My sculptures are meditative, symbolic, and often minimalist in structure, yet layered with meaning. They reflect a search for the divine in the everyday—a harmony between the spiritual and the tangible.
('Atmanaveshana' is on view at New Delhi's Bikaner House from 11 am to 7 pm till June 23)

You will be shocked to know how Neena Gupta's ex-boyfriend Vivian Richards reacted to her pregnancy

Neena Gupta is one of the finest actresses in the industry, whose life story is a powerful example of bold choices and inner strength. In the 1980s, she fell in love with West Indies cricket legend Vivian Richards. Their relationship was unconventional for its time, a cross-cultural bond formed when both were at the peak of their careers. While Vivian was already married, the two shared a deep emotional connection. However, Neena once shared about Vivian's reaction towards her pregnancy. What did Neena Gupta tell? In a previous conversation with Humans of Bombay, Neena recounted how she delivered the news to Vivian over a phone call. She was candid about her circumstances and gave him the option to walk away if he felt he couldn't handle the responsibility. She said, 'I wasn't exactly bursting with excitement. I felt joy because I loved him. I called him and said that if you don't want this child, then I won't have it. He replied, 'No, no, I would be thrilled for you to have this child.' Despite knowing the challenges of raising a child as a single mother in conservative Indian society, Neena decided to go ahead with the pregnancy. She gave birth to her daughter, Masaba Gupta, in 1989. Masaba would later grow up to be a well-known fashion designer and public figure. Neena faced immense criticism and societal pressure for her decision, but she remained firm and unapologetic. How did Vivian Richards supported Neena Gupta in raising Masaba Gupta? At that time, Neena had limited financial resources and even struggled with basic medical expenses during her pregnancy. Her father eventually became a strong pillar of support and Neena never spoke negatively about Vivian to Masaba. She always believed a child has the right to know their father, and she maintained a respectful relationship with Richards for the sake of their daughter. Years later, Neena found love again. In 2008, she married chartered accountant Vivek Mehra in a private ceremony. Though they live in different cities due to personal commitments, even after this, their bond remains strong, as in many of the conversations, Neena has often stated that this relationship brought her emotional peace. On the work front, Neena Gupta was last seen in Anurag Basu's musical drama 'Metro: In Dino, which also featured Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Anupam Kher and Saswata Chatterjee in pivotal roles.

Earlier on Saturday and Sunday, Divya played two classical games with Koneru, which resulted in a draws. On Monday too, she was again held to a draw in the time-controlled tie-breaker. However, in the reverse game she managed to overcome the two-time world rapid champion 2.5-1.5. Following the victory against an opponent twice her age, Divya couldn't control her tear and said, as quoted by PTI, "I need time to process it (win). I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way because before this (tournament) I didn't even have one (GM) norm, and now I am the Grandmaster." Divya has now secured a spot in next year's Candidates tournament, which would decide who will take on world champion Ju Wenjun of China in the Women's World Championship.
