Iran: Jailed women activists issue letter condemning Israeli attacks
Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, Verisheh Moradi, Sakineh Parvaneh and Reyhaneh Ansarinejad issued the letter, published by the pro-Kurdish Firat News Agency, from Evin prison in Tehran.
They accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and said its goal was to create a "weak and submissive" Middle East.
"Our liberation...from the dictatorship ruling the country is possible through the struggle of the masses and by resorting to social forces - not by clinging to foreign powers or placing hopes in them," they wrote.
"The powers that have always brought destruction to the countries of the region through exploitation and colonisation, by inciting wars and killing in pursuit of greater benefits, will have no way out for us except for new destruction and exploitation."

The authors of the letter are currently serving jail sentences over their involvement in a range of causes including pro-Kurdish campaigning and union organising.
Moradi, a campaigner with the Community of Free Women of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR) who fought against the Islamic State group in Syria, is facing a death sentence for "armed rebellion" over her support of the Woman, Life, Freedom demonstrations that broke out in 2022 over the death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.

The other three are currently serving sentences of between four and six years in prison.
Much of the Iranian opposition has been split over Israel's attack on Iran, which began earlier this week and has seen hundreds killed.
Some such as Reza Pahlavi, son of the former ruler of the country prior to 1979, have actively supported the air strikes and branded them the "best opportunity" to be rid of the Islamic Republic.
Others, such as former political prisoner Narges Mohammadi and filmmaker Jafar Panahi have condemned the air strikes on Iran while also advocating an end to Iran's nuclear ambitions and the "resignation of the current leaders" of the country.
In their letter, the four activists made apparent reference to those supporting Israel's attacks on the country, branding them "traitors" to Iran.
"Traitors to Iran and traitors to the peoples of the Middle East and traitors to the people's years of freedom-seeking struggles against oppression will know that their betrayal and disdain will be recorded in the memory of the Iranian people and in history," they wrote.
"Future generations will remember with shame those who stand on the corpses of defenceless people and trample them."

Zohran Mamdani's support for Palestinian rights sealed mayoral primary win, poll shows
Last month, New York City's Democratic mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, not only mounted one of the biggest upsets in establishment politics in years, but he also won the most votes of any candidate on a primary ballot in the city's history. New polling numbers released on Tuesday now show that his open support for Palestinian rights was the issue that "supercharged" his campaign. An overwhelming 78 percent of New Yorkers who voted for Mamdani agreed with him that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza, and 79 percent agreed that weapons transfers to Israel should be restricted. Out of New Yorkers who voted for him, 63 percent of those also supported arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - per the warrant from the International Criminal Court - if he visits New York City, something Mamdani has said he would do if he were to be elected mayor in November. The poll was commissioned by the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU) Policy Project and conducted by Data for Progress, which collected responses from 513 Democratic primary voters from 11-17 July 2025. When respondents were asked what issues affected their decision to vote for him, the top responses cited were his plans to lower the cost of living at 89 percent, and his plans to tax the wealthy and stand up to corporations, at 86 percent. But the third reason they cited was his support for Palestinian rights, at 62 percent. Among the new voters in 2025, that number rises to 83 percent, at a time when some states and international scholars, including Israeli experts and NGOs, have called Israel's war on Gaza a genocide. A growing wave But the sentiment against Israel isn't limited to just New York City. A new Gallup poll reported by CNN shows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's approval rating among Americans at -23 points, his lowest in the US since 1997. Israel's military acts in Gaza were also negatively rated at -28 percent. Overall, the number of Americans who sympathise with Israelis over Palestinians is at a historic low of +5 points, down from +48 in October 2023, before Israel's war on Gaza. "There's that top line of just unanimity around these questions that only a minority of Democratic members of Congress are willing to say, which is referring to or recognising Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide, and calling for weapons to be restricted to Israel," he said. The IMEU noted in its statement on Tuesday that the polling included an oversample of New York's 10th congressional district, which is represented by Dan Goldman, who is "funded by AIPAC [and] who has repeatedly voted with Republicans to advance anti-Palestinian legislation". Aipac is the largest and most influential pro-Israel lobbying group in the US, and it has backed individual lawmakers to the tune of millions of dollars depending on their seniority and influence. Mamdani's foremost opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, was supported by Aipac. "I mean, there's a couple things to break down there, right? One is just the general idea that being critical of the Israeli government as a politician is a liability," Bendaas said. "And there is the liability element of powerful interests that will spend money on ads against you, and they did in this election, seemingly motivated by [Mamdani's] criticism of the Israeli government and his support for Palestinians." But despite Mamdani being outspent 8-1 by Cuomo, he handily won the primary. "What we're finding is that especially in the Democratic primary electorate, the view is so close to unanimous that they are supportive of Palestinian rights, and highly critical of the Israeli government, that those millions of dollars actually can't overcome it," Bendaas told MEE. He said he hopes Mamdani's win on the issue of Palestinian rights can form a blueprint moving forward for a party that is currently stagnant and still reeling from losing the White House and the Senate. Palestine is "a highly salient issue for voters", Bendaas said. "It's actually activating people and making people come out for someone who they see doesn't follow" the lines being dictated in Washington, he added, and "they're so drawn to it".

Israeli ambassador to UAE being sent home over 'undignified' behaviour at bar: Report
Israel's ambassador to the UAE is being summoned home from his post over 'undignified' behaviour at an Emirati bar that upset the UAE, according to Hebrew media reports. Israel's government was forced to recall its ambassador to the Gulf state, Yossef Avraham Shelley, after the UAE said it was no longer willing to accept him as ambassador, Israel's Channel 12 news reported on Tuesday. Hebrew news site N12 reported earlier that Shelley antagonised the UAE by showing up to a bar in the Gulf state with several Israelis, including women, and acting in a way that UAE officials told Israel was 'unacceptable and even harmed our dignity'. The UAE normalised ties with Israel in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords brokered by US President Donald Trump. Abu Dhabi has emerged as Israel's closest Arab partner in the region amid an uproar over Israel's war on Gaza, which leading human rights groups and scholars have declared is a genocide. The UAE is the one Arab country that Israel's foreign minister has been able to visit since the war in Gaza erupted. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar travelled to the UAE in January 2025 before a temporary ceasefire in Gaza was reached. The tiny Gulf state is home to 10 million people, of whom just 10 percent are Emirati citizens. The country counts South Asian labourers, British expats, Russian oligarchs and flashy influencers among its residents. Dubai is known for being the Gulf region's nightlife capital. Hebrew media reported last week that Shelley was out on a Friday night in Abu Dhabi with friends and acted in an 'undignified' manner that 'crossed the boundaries of personal space' on Friday evening. Shelley previously served as Israeli ambassador to Brazil, where he was at the centre of two scandals. In one case, Shelley was photographed having dinner with former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro. The image of their dinner on Instagram appeared to show lobster scribbled out in black. Jewish kosher diet rules prohibit the consumption of shellfish. In 2023, Haaretz reported that Shelley personally responded to an Israeli visa inquiry by a Brazilian woman. He told her in correspondence and in video chats that she needed to meet him in person before he would help her obtain a visa to visit Israel. In a video call with her, Shelley appeared shirtless and lying on a bed. 'When I turned on the camera, I saw he was lying on the bed, sweating,' the woman recounted. 'He said he'd just returned from a walk. It was very inappropriate. I asked him if he'd rather talk later, and he said, 'No, let's talk now.' He asked to meet with me in person and invited me to dinner in Brasilia. I felt pressured and harassed.' Shelley was later named the director general of the prime minister's office. Shelley was named ambassador to the UAE in November 2024. 'Yossi served as a very, very effective ambassador in Brazil,' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time. 'He made connections there not only with the president of Brazil, but also with the Brazilian media and did a wonderful job there. He also did important and difficult work in the Prime Minister's Office during this period.'

Canada never stopped arming Israel despite pledge to halt new permits, report says
The Canadian government misled the public when it said it was pausing all new weapons export permits to Israel last year, a new report published on Tuesday says. Commercially available data has shown shipments not only continued but were actually fast-tracked - and sometimes via indirect routes such as through the US. The findings, compiled by an all-volunteer team from the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) and the groups World Beyond War and Arms Embargo Now, point to efforts by Ottawa to placate an electorate that has expressed growing dissatisfaction with how the Liberal Party has responded to Israel's war on Gaza - but without actually reversing its policy of unconditional support for Israel, as it publicly pledged. "Shipments of arms to Israel were allowed to proceed under hundreds of previously approved permits. This communications ploy allowed Canadian companies to continue to profit from Israel's genocide while the Federal government misled Canadians into believing they were no longer arming the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza," the authors wrote in the report. The 58-page document entitled "Exposing Canadian Military Exports to Israel" cites more than 390 shipments from 21 Canadian manufacturers in six cities that included more than 420,000 bullets, 735 cartridge parts (ammunition sets for firearms), F-35 jet parts such as navigation sensors, radar systems, and dual-use items like GPS antennas. The authors say they used two complementary methodologies for the first time to track Canadian arms exports: commercial shipping data crosschecked with Israeli Tax Authority import data from October 2023 to May 2025. "[The report] exposes a vastly different reality than government claims: a continuous, massive pipeline of Canadian weapons flowing directly to Israel," the authors said. Middle East Eye reached out to Global Affairs Canada, the foreign ministry, but was not given a response by the time of publication. Israel has killed over 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza since the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023. And since March, it has imposed a crippling siege on the enclave that has led to a declaration of famine by the world's top food and aid bodies. "Canada must urgently impose a full two-way arms embargo on Israel. This requires canceling all active arms export permits, closing loopholes for US transfers, banning surveillance and dual-use technology, and canceling all contracts and planned purchases of military goods from Israel," the report urged. The F-35 programme A key finding in the report is that parts made in Canada by three main companies routinely make up at least $2.1m of every F-35 fighter jet - the most sophisticated and highly sought-after fifth-generation fighter jet, designed in the US by Lockheed Martin. Beyond its Nato and G7 partners and Australia, no other country in the world has access to these stealth aircraft except Israel. "Canadian components, we've known for a long time, are critical in constructing the F-35," Yara Shoufani, a PYM organiser, told MEE. The three named manufacturers in Canada are Stelia, which makes composite panels and precision structural parts for the jets; CMC, which makes Doppler Velocity Sensors for target precision; and Nexeya, which supplies Modular Product Testers to ensure jets are combat-ready, the report showed. Almost all these parts ended up at Elbit Systems. 'Elbit, as a weapons manufacturer, has really come to be seen across the world as synonymous with genocide' - Yara Shoufani, Palestinian Youth Movement "This is really concerning when you think about the fact that Elbit, as a weapons manufacturer, has really come to be seen across the world as synonymous with genocide," Shoufani said. "For the Canadian government to be allowing for these manufacturers based in Canada to be sending weapon components to Israel's largest weapon manufacturer is something that should really raise alarms." On 13 July 2024, Israel deployed an F-35 fighter jet to drop three 2,000-pound bombs on al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, an area of southern Gaza it had explicitly designated a 'safe zone'. At least 90 Palestinians were killed, and another 300 were wounded in the attack. The report cited the bombing as an example of the damage only this particular fighter jet is capable of doing. While the F-35's "ongoing operability relies on a complex international supply chain," the report said, "the F-35 cannot conduct air strikes without Canadian parts". How do the weapons get to Israel? Canadian weapons exports were traced by the authors to major Israeli firms such as Elta Systems and Snunit Aviation, in addition to the main recipient, Elbit Systems. The Canadian minister of foreign affairs is ultimately responsible for signing off on the export permits to any foreign entity, and they are typically valid for at least two to three years from the date of approval, the report showed. The authors of the report wrote that the flow of military goods between Canada and Israel operates in two ways: direct commercial exports from Canadian companies to Israel, and indirect exports where Canadian arms are shipped to Israel through transfers via the United States. The latter allows Canada to exploit a loophole that exempts it from its permitting requirements, which stipulate that no military support can be provided to countries potentially involved in war crimes. Palestine Action 'shut down' Elbit Systems HQ and subcontractor Read More » Shoufani added that out of the 100 direct shipments that they were able to identify, there were 67 times where military cargo was loaded onto passenger planes. "So here we're talking about major airlines like Lufthansa, Air France, Air Canada, Air Transat, where essentially components are being loaded onto planes that have passengers headed to holiday destinations," Shoufani said. Among the airlines involved in carrying Canadian-made weapons and support parts to Israel since 7 October 2023 is Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi. The report identified at least four such flights by Etihad. Canada also imports Israeli military technology and hardware, the report pointed out, including weapons that have been deployed against Palestinians and are in turn marketed to the government of Canada as 'battle-tested' and 'combat-proven". A survey commissioned by the National Council of Canadian Muslims in March, a year and a half into the war on Gaza that scholars and human rights groups have now termed a genocide, showed that 55 percent of respondents want to see arms transfers to Israel suspended. There was a similar amount of support for backing the International Criminal Court and arresting officials with outstanding warrants if they come to Canada, namely Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defence minister, Yoav Gallant.
