Merged districts of erstwhile tribal areas of KP: PTI rejects revival of jirga system
Speaking at a press conference, acting PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan – flanked by senior leaders Shah Farman and party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram – described the panel, led by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam and constituted on June 25, as an unconstitutional intrusion into provincial jurisdiction.
'After the 25th Constitutional Amendment, full authority over the jirga system in the merged districts of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) lies with the provincial government,' Gohar said. 'There is no legal basis for this federal committee.'
He added that PTI had not participated in any of the committee's meetings and the restoration of the tribal jirga system was never formally discussed.
Calling the erstwhile FATA areas extremely sensitive, Gohar demanded that the federal panel be disbanded without delay. He noted PTI's strong electoral presence in the region, pointing out that five of the seven MNAs and 14 of the 17 MPAs from the erstwhile tribal areas belong to the party.
Party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram accused the federal government of unnecessary interference and claimed it had withheld over Rs70 billion in funds allocated to the former FATA. He questioned the rationale behind establishing a new jirga mechanism when one already exists.
Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman said the FATA merger in 2018 was carried out to bring development to the region, and legislation was enacted to empower elected representatives from FATA.
He emphasized that funds and administrative responsibilities were to be handled by elected provincial representatives, not the federal government.
He also stated that a review of the now-defunct Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) was under consideration, alongside efforts to align local governance with that of Pakistan's settled areas.
He added that the merger had been completed through an agreement between the federal and provincial governments.
'The tribal people were, are, and will remain who they are… we cannot change their way of life,' he said. 'The privileges granted to FATA were meant to be enhanced, not reduced,' he maintained.

Kundi rules out no-confidence move against CM
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Wednesday clarified that there is no intention to bring a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, stating that if the opposition gains a majority, it would be within their constitutional right to do so. Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet of the Video Journalists Association at the Governor's House in Peshawar, Kundi emphasized that while politics has its place, conflicts cannot be resolved through smiles alone. "We have recommended civil awards for those who saved lives during the Swat tragedy," he said. He praised Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's journalists for their frontline role in the war against terrorism and pledged to advocate for their rights on every forum. "Journalists from this province have made great sacrifices. Their role cannot be overlooked," he stated. Responding to a question about Chief Minister Gandapur attending the Chief Justice's oath-taking ceremony, the Governor said, "If someone visits your home, you show them respect - that is our tradition and culture." Kundi added that although there is no current plan for a no-confidence move against the CM, "if someone is exercising their democratic right, we will stand with them." He also noted that if PTI achieves parity in other provinces, they too have the right to bring a no-confidence motion. Following the tragic incident in Swat, the provincial branch of the Red Crescent has been provided with ambulances and emergency boats to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The Governor announced that volunteers who saved lives during the Swat tragedy will be sent on Umrah and that five additional boats will be made available, which will remain in coordination with volunteer Hilal Khan. Earlier in the ceremony, Governor Kundi administered oaths to the newly elected office bearers. Senior journalist Amjad Aziz Malik moderated the event.

PTI's protest call
Listen to article Cornered to the core, the PTI has decided to throw down the gauntlet. Driven by exigency and desperation alike, PTI chairman Imran Khan has decided to call off any kind of dialogue with the state and directed his party to gear up for a nationwide protest. Languishing in solitary confinement, the former prime minister believes that much water has flown down the bridge, and the 26th constitutional amendment, in particular, has come to jaundice the hopes of the masses in judiciary, otherwise thought of as the custodian of the Constitution, and thus the guarantor of the democratic order. Riven with infighting, the opposition party will have an uphill task if it launches an anti-government movement. But the fact that the PTI has been pushed to the wall and that there is no political and institutional recourse to claim its due space makes the call for protest relevant for party sympathisers and alarming for the beleaguered government. The incarcerated leader's appeal to keep the protest lawful and peaceful is appreciated. The onus is now on the fractured party to make its presence felt in the political arena, an aspect that its elected legislators and stalwarts have not been able to dispense. This time around the icing on the cake will be the inclusion of Khan's sons and his immediate family, who plan to lead from the front. Khan's equating the protest to 'second Pakistan movement' is expected to stir renewed interest and is in need of being watched out for. The fact that the proposed movement will kickstart from August 5, marking the second year of Khan's imprisonment, will come as a challenge for the ruling coalition that is struggling to put up not only a decent governance at the helm, but also at a failure in erecting a sound economic edifice. The political mosaic has seen enough crests and troughs, and now is the time to bring in the PTI in the national mainstream in order to usher in political stability. Any continuation of revenge politics would be suicidal for the collective good of the country.

Federal Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, said: 'Our schools and students are full of passion and excitement to celebrate the day with different activities like debates, essay competitions, painting competitions and many other exciting initiatives.' During the meeting, participants shared a range of proposals to ensure that the celebrations reflect the hearts of ordinary Pakistanis and involve everyone — from the cities to the villages, from students to artists, and from businesses to the diaspora. Plans were discussed for national songs, heartfelt dramas, poetry gatherings, documentaries, cultural fairs, public events, school competitions, and global embassy activities, all designed to inspire the nation and tell its story to the world.
