Independence Day being dedicated to theme ‘Marqa-e-Haq'
While chairing the high-level meeting on Tuesday, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal reviewed the decisions taken on the celebrations so far.
He reiterated that this year's Independence Day was being dedicated to the theme 'Marqa-e-Haq', the Battle for Truth to honour the courage, faith, and resolve of the nation. He said that the celebrations will send a clear message to the world that Pakistan stands proud, strong, and committed to its sovereignty. He added that 'at the same time, the government aims to highlight the steady progress being made in economic recovery, defence resilience and international recognition of Pakistan's leadership, economic recovery, and expertise showing that Pakistan's journey is not just about survival but about rising to its full potential'.
Senior representatives from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, Ministry of Education and Professional Training, Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination and other departments participated in the meeting to discuss how to make the day truly reflective of the feelings, aspirations, and pride of the people of Pakistan.
While discussing the activities of the celebrations, the planning minister stressed that every sector, every directed chairman HEC and secretary Education should ensure that all universities and schools should celebrate the day in the same format. The same was advised for provincial celebrations and celebrations abroad in collaboration with the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis.
A robust discussion took place where the committee members shared the planned activities and innovative ideas for celebrations at the federal and provincial level. The minister said that a comprehensive plan should be developed with budgets.
Speaking to the participants, Federal Minister Iqbal said: 'This year, we are not just commemorating another Independence Day, we are marking a moment of national revival. A moment that reflects the resilience of our people, the resolve of our state, and the rise of Pakistan as a global voice of strength, peace, and purpose. The world has seen that while Pakistan is a peace-loving nation, it will never compromise on its sovereignty. Our recent defence of our territorial integrity showed our maturity, strength, and our determination to protect regional stability without weakness.'
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, addressing the meeting, said: 'The nation stands as one united, unshaken, and ready to defeat any designs against it. Our civil and military forces are shoulder to shoulder. These celebrations will reiterate to the world what they are already telling us that we are united and strong.'
The Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ataullah Tarar, shared that extensive plans were underway with song competitions, special programming and a documentary. He assured that the celebrations will be reflective of the achievements of the country and celebrate the global acclaim the country is receiving.
Federal Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, said: 'Our schools and students are full of passion and excitement to celebrate the day with different activities like debates, essay competitions, painting competitions and many other exciting initiatives.'
During the meeting, participants shared a range of proposals to ensure that the celebrations reflect the hearts of ordinary Pakistanis and involve everyone — from the cities to the villages, from students to artists, and from businesses to the diaspora. Plans were discussed for national songs, heartfelt dramas, poetry gatherings, documentaries, cultural fairs, public events, school competitions, and global embassy activities, all designed to inspire the nation and tell its story to the world.

State-sponsored terrorism part of India's policy to destabilise Pakistan: DG ISPR
India is using state-sponsored terrorism as a policy against Pakistan, especially in Balochistan, said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director-General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Wednesday. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera TV, the military spokesperson said India's support for terrorist activities is aimed at destabilising Pakistan's security, particularly in the volatile region of Balochistan. "These nefarious designs of India are a systematic conspiracy to destabilise Pakistan, especially in Balochistan," he said. He added that India had admitted multiple times to supporting terrorism within Pakistan. Lt Gen Chaudhry reiterated that Pakistan views any aggression against its sovereign territory as a direct threat to regional stability. "India's political leadership has repeatedly admitted to supporting terrorism in Pakistan," said Gen Chaudhry, naming Ajit Doval, India's National Security Advisor, as the mastermind behind New Delhi's network of state-sponsored terrorism. Read: Doval Doctrine: India's trail of terror The military spokesperson also referred to the recent attack in Waziristan, claimed by the proscribed TTP, which martyred 16 Pakistani soldiers and injured over 20 others. Pakistan has consistently maintained that India is directly involved in such attacks. "India is supporting and financing terrorist activities in Pakistan," reiterated Gen Chaudhry while speaking to Al Jazeera TV. The term 'Khawarij' has been widely used by Pakistan's military and media recently to refer to armed groups that attack the state and its military forces. These nefarious designs of India are a systematic conspiracy to destabilise Pakistan, especially in Balochistan. ISPR DG Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry 'The current Fitna al-Khawarij is a continuation of the misguided ideology that has historically led to the killing of Muslims under a false religious narrative,' he said. In Islam, only the state has the authority to wage holy war (jihad) or engage in combat, and no individual, organisation, or group has this power, he said. DG ISPR added that the term Fitna al-Hindustan was used in Pakistan to describe terrorists supported by India. 'Fitna al-Hindustan is particularly active in destabilising the country, especially in the province of Balochistan,' he said. He emphasised that several countries, including the United States and Canada, have acknowledged Indian state-sponsored terrorism on their soil. Referring to the country's nuclear capability, the senior army general maintained that Pakistan was a responsible and declared nuclear power and its nuclear program was completely secure. 'Our nuclear capability is invincible and no one can dare to target our nuclear programme,' he added. The army spokesperson also spoke about broader geopolitical issues, reaffirming Pakistan's support for Iran in the face of Israeli aggression. 'Pakistan stands firmly with Iran in these challenging times.'

Nationwide poverty explosion: PIDE challenges widely circulated narrative
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), while debunking the claims regarding a sharp increase in poverty in the country has clarified the situation, saying the rise in poverty statistics is primarily due to global metric recalibration rather than a sudden economic collapse. The Economic Think Tank with its latest report titled, 'The Poverty Illusion: When Numbers Distort Reality' has challenged the widely circulated narrative of a nationwide poverty explosion. The report, authored by Dr Nasir Iqbal, PIDE's registrar and associate professor, critically examines the World Bank's revised global poverty lines. The new $4.20 per day threshold, replacing the previous $3.20, has led to an increase in poverty statistics from 39.8 percent to 44.7percent. However, Dr Iqbal points out that more than 80percent of this increase is the result of shifting global poverty benchmarks, not a collapse in household conditions. Inflation and other factors account for just 18percent of the increase. As per the report, the extreme poverty, measured at $3 per day, has soared from 4.9 percent to 16.5 percent. The sharp uptick in poverty rates is largely the result of the World Bank's upward revision of global poverty lines. For lower-middle-income countries like Pakistan, the general poverty threshold has been increased from $3.20 to $4.20 per day. Likewise, the extreme poverty line has been revised upward from $2.15 to $3 per day. These changes represent a substantial recalibration of the baseline used to assess poverty. When the bar is raised, more people fall below it — not because their lives have deteriorated, but because the measurement standard has shifted. Dr Nadeem Javaid, vice chancellor (VC) of PIDE and member of the Planning Commission of Pakistan, stated, 'Policymaking must be grounded in facts, not fear. These revised figures reflect changes in how poverty is measured globally, not a dramatic decline in the livelihoods of Pakistanis.' Key insights from PIDE's analysis include the strength of the informal economy, which supports over 60 percent of Pakistan's workforce, absorbing economic shocks and offering resilience during crises. Social protection programmes such as the Ehsaas Programme and the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) have played significant roles in mitigating poverty. Additionally, remittances from overseas Pakistanis continue to provide vital support, cushioning households and bolstering the economy during times of distress. Even amid major economic shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 floods, PIDE estimates the poverty rate in 2025 to be between 23 percent and 25 percent, with food-based poverty pegged at just 6.2 percent, signalling consistent, long-term improvement. In light of these findings, PIDE has proposed a series of actions to address poverty with a data-driven approach. These include reinstating the Household Integrated Economic Survey (HIES) to update data, refining BISP to link cash transfers with measurable outcomes like education, employment, and asset growth, and developing a National Poverty Reduction Strategy integrated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure inclusive economic reforms. Additionally, PIDE calls for leveraging the informal economy through the creation of Village Economic Zones (VEZs) to boost rural employment and productivity via local value chains and agri-tech innovations. The VC PIDE emphasised, 'This is not a time for panic, but for rational, evidence-based policymaking that can turn perceived crises into opportunities for structural economic reform.'
