Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is not your typical fifth-round draft pick.
Initially projected to go somewhere in Round 1, Sanders experienced one of the more difficult-to-watch draft falls of all time before the Browns took him with the 144th overall pick back in April.
But despite his fifth-round standing, Sanders is very much in competition to win the team's starting quarterback job despite the crowded QB room that also features Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco, former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel.
And while head coach Kevin Stefanski has maintained all along that all four players have as good a chance as the next to be Cleveland's QB1 heading into Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.

But if you ask Bleacher Report's Moe Moton, he thinks it's possible none of the four will be the Browns' starter next season.
"[Running backs] Jerome Ford and Quinshon Judkins must find open running lanes because Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel may feel immense pocket pressure off the edges," Moton wrote. "... The Browns will remain in the AFC North cellar with an eye on quarterbacks next year."

If the Browns are thinking quarterback next summer heading into the 2026 draft, it likely means that Sanders either didn't win the starting job, or he didn't show enough for the Browns' front office to feel comfortable moving forward with him as the franchise passer.
And to Moton's point, the Browns have two first-round picks in 2026 — their own plus the Jaguars' pick, both of which could be in the top 10 (Cleveland went 3-14 in 2024 and Jacksonville went 4-13) — and the 2026 QB class is loaded.
The crown jewel is Texas' Arch Manning, but many analysts believe he'll be sticking around school as long as he can.
But outside of Manning, there's still plenty of talent to go around with as many as six other passers expected to go in Round 1 including Clemson's Cade Klubnik, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, Penn State's Drew Allar, South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, Arizona State's Sam Leavitt, and Miami's Carson Beck.
Should the Browns find themselves picking in the top five again next year, there's a good chance they'll take a quarterback with that pick unless Pickett, Sanders, or Gabriel make a really compelling case not to.
Even if one of the three has an All-Pro-caliber season, it would be really hard for the Browns to pass on Manning if he declares for the 2026 draft.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders declines to address health issues at Big 12 media days
FRISCO, Texas — Deion Sanders declined to address any of his health issues when he took the podium at Big 12 football media days Wednesday after being away from Colorado. 'I'm not here to talk about my health,' said Sanders, who is going to his third season as the Buffaloes coach. 'I'm here to talk about my team.' Since overseeing Colorado's spring game April 19, Sanders hadn't attended football camps in Boulder. The school had said last month, amid reports that the coach was ill, that it could not say why he was absent from those camps. Sanders did not specifically answer any lingering questions. 'I'm looking good. I'm living lovely. God has truly blessed me,' he said. 'Not a care in the world. Not a want or desire in the world.' Sanders was the last of the league's 16 coaches to take the podium on the main stage over two days at the headquarters of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, which is about 75 miles from a massive ranch the Pro Football Hall of Fame player has in Canton, Texas. While commending the work of Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark in his opening remarks, Sanders said that Yormark called him daily to check to make sure he was getting better. There have also been a lot of calls from his fellow league coaches. 'I love them, they've been calling and checking on me, making sure I'm straight,' Sanders said. This will be Sanders first season at Colorado without having one of his sons on the team. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft, and safety Shilo Sanders signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent. Also gone is Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, the two-way standout who played for Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado and will now try to play both ways in the NFL with Jacksonville. Sanders is 13-12 in his two seasons with the Buffaloes, who in their return to the Big 12 last season missed making the league championship game on a tiebreaker after being one of four teams to finish 7-2 in conference play. He is under contract with the Buffaloes through the 2029 season after agreeing to a new $54 million, five-year deal this spring that made him the Big 12's highest-paid coach. That replaced the final three years of the $29.5 million, five-year deal he got when he arrived from Jackson State.

From 36 to 91: Tua Tagovailoa's Top 100 NFL ranking sparks debate
The Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback has taken a tumble down the NFL's annual Top 100 players list. Some are saying it isn't far enough. In 2024, Tua Tagovailoa earned the No. 36 spot on the NFL's Top 100 list, setting high expectations for a breakout season. But after missing 6.5 games due to concussions and a hip injury, he slid to No. 91 on this year's list, voted on annually by NFL players, as announced by the league over the weekend. Of the 15 spots on the list that have been revealed so far, Tagovailoa is the only quarterback to appear. 'Unless there are going to be 15 or 16 quarterbacks in the top 90, then this is too high,' TV personality for Fox Sports' First Things First Nick Wright said on Tagovailoa's ranking. Despite an injury-plagued year, Tagovailoa posted strong numbers for the Dolphins when active. In the 11 games he started, Tagovailoa completed 291 of 399 passes (72.9%) for 2,867 yards, with 19 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. His regular-season passer rating was an impressive 101.4, and he averaged approximately 260.6 yards per game. In games Tagovailoa missed, the Dolphins averaged just 13.3 points and went 2–4, compared to the stronger 6–5 mark and 24.1 points per game when he was under center. But critics argue that despite the numbers, Tagovailoa's production hasn't translated when it matters most. 'Tua has a losing record against teams that have a winning record. They come up short in the postseason because, guess what, all you play are teams that have good records,' Super Bowl champion and 11-year NFL pro Chris Canty said on ESPN's Unsportsmanlike show Wednesday morning. 'So I guess the question then becomes, well if he's not healthy, and he can't beat good teams, what is the long-term value of staying with this quarterback?' However, those who know him best say the obstacles have only made him stronger. Perhaps the fall to No. 91 will give the former University of Alabama star quarterback something to prove. 'For Tua, I think there were a lot of lessons learned, last year in particular, on and off the field — when he was playing, when he wasn't— [on] how to do his job,' head coach Mike McDaniel said earlier this summer at Dolphins OTA practices. Or perhaps the No. 91 spot is really just another offseason talking point — a conversation-starter with little merit or translation to on-field performance. Many around the league have even called the list a 'joke' or 'content filler,' questioning its overall value. After all, players already have enough to focus on studying their own film and that of their opponents. Making a holistic evaluation of every player across all 32 rosters isn't exactly in the job description. Tagovailoa's path back up the rankings will likely depend on two things: health and signature wins. He has yet to complete a full season without missing time and remains winless in the postseason with the Dolphins. If he can stay on the field and lead Miami to victories over top-tier opponents in the playoffs, he won't just silence critics—he'll force his way back into the league's top tier.
