Ferguson boys soccer ousts Cypress Bay, faces Columbus next; Palmetto girls advance
Despite being a No. 3 seed and hosting the No. 6 seed, the Falcons entered Tuesday afternoon's Region 4-7A quarterfinal matchup against Cypress Bay a slight underdog.
This was the same Lightning program that has a half-dozen state championships including five in a seven-year span from 2011 to 2017 with the most recent coming in 2022.
In contrast, Ferguson was making only its second regional appearance in the last 13 years and looking to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2012.
That's exactly what the Falcons did.
An early goal by Rodrigo Carmona in the game's 11th minute didn't seem like a big deal at the time. But as it turned out, it was the only score of the game as the Falcons (10-2-2) on the strength of solid second half defense in addition to a pair of outstanding saves by goalkeeper and senior captain Anthony Pasto emerged with a 1-0 victory at Tropical Park
The win advanced the Falcons (10-2-2) to a regional semifinal matchup with No. 2 seed Columbus on Friday at FIU Soccer Park at 7 p.m. after the Explorers eliminated No. 7 seed Coral Glades 5-1 in the opposite quarterfinal.
'Sure they had the caché coming in with the championship banners and there were some our kids yesterday that were talking about how they have all those state titles from the past and were a really strong program,' Ferguson coach Joey Ojeda said. 'I just drilled them on the fact that they play 80 minutes of soccer just like us and that all of that is from the past. Today, they paid no attention to that, fought their tails off from start to finish and came out on top.'
Nobody fought harder than Pasto. With that one goal deficit, Cypress Bay (12-5-3) pressed the action in the second half and had the ball down on Ferguson's end for much of the time. Solid defense kept Cypress Bay players at bay but twice, the Lightning had golden opportunities to score the equalizer.
The first came with 29 minutes left when a perfect centering pass from the corner found Gerardo Galvan down low right smack in front of the net with only Pasto in the way. He right-footed one as Pasto reached out with his left hand to deflect it away. With the ball still loose in front of the net, defender Diego Carmona (no relation to Rodrigo) got to it first and cleared the ball out.
Thirteen minutes later, Lorenzo Abbiatti rifled a perfect centering pass from the right that Sebastian Paba was waiting for. He headed it straight for the left corner of the net but Pasto reached out and snagged it with both hands.
'Sure, I had a couple of big-time saves in the second half which is great but other than that, I didn't have to do much because my defense was out there protecting me,' Pasto said. 'It was all from being locked in, from the start of the game all the way to the final whistle, we all got it done as a team. What we did today meant so much, not just for us but our fans, our school, everybody. Nobody from the outside thought we weren't going to do it today and we kind of felt like the underdog but we had that positivity that I think got us through.'
Carmona's goal was almost a little fluky. When he took a pass down the right side from Alejandro Insignares, Cypress Bay keeper Simon Arango came out to meet him but didn't get there in time. Carmona simply flicked the ball with the side of his right foot and the ball bounced the last 20 yards into the bottom left corner of the net.
'We probably have practiced that play millions of times,' Carmona said. 'I saw the keeper out of the corner of my eye and then just flicked it with my foot to misdirect it. I wasn't sure if I was off sides or not and fortunately I didn't hear the whistle. I honestly didn't think that would turn out to be the only score of the game but fortunately it held up.'
For Ojeda, Tuesday's win signaled that he has this Falcons program on a fast-track to success after taking over a struggling program just 18 months ago.
'I think, last year when I came in, there was a lack of professionalism and a lack of commitment to the program,' said Ojeda, who played for the program before graduating in 2018. 'Last year we lost in the district final when we needed to win in order to make it to regionals and that was real heartbreak for out kids. But I think the heartbreak really inspired the underclassmen to pick up the mantle, maintain that professionalism and commitment to the program and today's result was their reward.'

ESPN names LB Divine Deablo biggest surprise from Falcons OTAs
Falcons LB Divine Divine Deablo named biggest surprise from OTAs The Atlanta Falcons were fairly quiet during NFL free agency, signing just a handful of players at positions of need. Edge rusher Leonard Floyd and safety Jordan Fuller were arguably the most notable signings, but don't sleep on linebacker Divine Deablo. The 26-year-old started 14 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last season, recording 63 tackles (35 solo) and one sack. Since the Falcons did not re-sign Nate Landman or Lorenzo Carter in free agency, Deablo should at the very least provide depth. However, the team seems to think the veteran linebacker will play more than just a depth role this season. Deablo impressed during Atlanta's offseason program and could be in line for a starting role if he has a good camp. In a new feature from ESPN, Marc Raimondi named Deablo as the Falcons' biggest surprise of OTAs: The Falcons didn't have the salary-cap room to make any huge splashes in free agency this offseason. But the team thinks they really found something in Deablo, whose base salary is only $1.66 million this season. Head coach Raheem Morris has been impressed with Deablo's size (6-foot-3), length and speed. Even more than that, Morris believes Deablo is capable of wearing the green dot as kind of the quarterback of the defense. It sounds like the former Raider has a solid chance at a starting job at inside linebacker alongside Kaden Elliss. -- Marc Raimondi, ESPN The Falcons also have former second-round pick Troy Andersen, who played well before his season was cut short due to injury. Andersen is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has a lot to prove after an up-and-down first couple of years in Atlanta. Another option could be to use first-round pick Jalon Walker in a hybrid off-ball linebacker/edge role this season. The rookie played a similar role at Georgia, and since the team has both Floyd and James Pearce Jr. on the roster, there's no reason to rush Walker along this season. It all comes down to what defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich thinks is best for the team. For now, though, it would be wise not to overlook Deablo.

Do The Falcons Have The Best Young Team In The NFL?
Do The Falcons Have The Best Young Team In The NFL? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As we transition into the 2025 season, there are a lot of questions for the Falcons, but one simple one is if they have the best young roster in the league. There is a lot of hope for the future of this team, but first they must show that they can play well together and make the playoffs. Advertisement The Falcons have been stuck right under the playoffs since 2018, and hope that this is the year that all changes. They have a good young core on both offense and defense to start out, and each player has shown flashes of stardom. Jan 5, 2025; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson (7) celebrates with teammates after a touchdown run against the Carolina Panthers in the second quarter at Mercedes-Benz StadiumBrett Davis Imagn Images It all starts with running back Bijan Robinson, who is already a pro bowler and had a 1,456-yard rushing season with 15 total touchdowns. Robinson was third in the NFL in rushing yards behind Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry. Drake London is entering his fourth year and has already put up productive numbers in the NFL and arguably should have been a pro bowler in 2024. He is coming off a 1,000-yard season where he also caught 100 passes for the first time in his career. Advertisement Michael Penix Jr. is entering his first full season as a starter and looks to have a breakout year with the pieces that he has on the offense. Penix is one of the young up and coming quarterbacks this league has to offer and will look to show that this season. The Defense has added some young talent as well with draft picks Jalon Walker, James Pearce Jr., Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman Jr. All of those players can realistically start in 2025 and change the complexity of the defense that has struggled for years. The Falcons are going to rely heavily on youth and their stars for years to come. They will also look to prove that they have one of, if not the brightest future in the league. On offense it is a bit different, it is mainly star players gaining more experience and coming off their best seasons. Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Jalon Walker (11) reacts after a tackle against the Tennessee Volunteers in the third quarter at Sanford Davis-Imagn Images The main story for the Falcons outside of the Kirk Cousins drama, is how Michael Penix Jr. can adjust to being a full-time starter. As of right now it is looking like Penix can take over this team and can be the quarterback that the Falcons have been looking for since Matt Ryan left. The other story has been about Kyle Pitts and what will happen with him. As of right now he is a Falcon and will need to have his best career season if he wants to remain a member of the team and get a new contract for 2026. There have been multiple trade rumors for him including the Chiefs and Dolphins.
